Gun Point Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here again for the imperial version.

First up, I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook for Gun Point over the next 16 days is a rough one. We’ve got a solid run of cross-onshore wind from the east, which is gonna trash any chance of clean conditions. Water temp is about 84°F, pretty much average for this time of year.

The first few days are a bust. Wednesday the 5th into Thursday the 6th, we’re looking at small swell around 3 feet, but with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds and that cross-onshore breeze, it’s just choppy and messy. The combined energy is weak to moderate (64 to 146), and honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for.

Friday the 7th through to Sunday the 9th, the swell picks up a bit – 4 to 5 feet, period still short at 7 to 8 seconds – but the wind stays fresh and cross-onshore. The energy climbs into the 200s, but with the lumpy conditions, it’s still poor. You’d be fighting more than you’d be riding.

There’s a bit of a gap through the middle of the week – Monday the 10th to Wednesday the 12th – where the swell drops back to 3 to 3 feet. Energy drops below 100 at times. Still no good wind. If you’re desperate, maybe a longboard on a glassy morning, but there’s no glassy morning here.

Now, towards the end of the second week, things get a bit more interesting in size. From Friday the 14th through to Tuesday the 18th, we see swell heights consistently between 5 and 6 feet, with periods finally hitting 8 seconds. The energy really builds – 308 to 444 – so there’s definitely push in the water. But the wind… it’s still cross-onshore from the east, 20 to 35 km/h. That’s a solid no-go for clean surf. For a reef and point setup like Gun Point, that’s frustrating. At 6 feet, it’s getting into expert-only territory anyway, but with the chop, it’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle-surfing session.

The highlight of the whole period – if you can call it that – is maybe the 16th and 17th of August, where the swell is 5 to 6 feet, period 8 seconds, and the wind drops to a moderate 20 to 25 km/h. Still cross-onshore, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The combined energy is strong (310 to 378). If you’re an experienced surfer who doesn’t mind a bit of bump, you might get some decent walls at high tide, but it’s nothing to get excited about. The wind direction is from the east, and the optimum for Gun Point is a NE offshore, so we’re not even close to ideal.

Bottom line: there’s no standout day in the whole 16-day window. The wind is the enemy here. If you’re a kite surfer, those afternoons with 30 to 35 km/h east wind and 5 to 6 foot swell might be fun. For paddle surfing, it’s a blank run. That’s not unusual for this area when the trades set in.
