The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one. We’re looking at Outers, and honestly, it’s a frustrating run. The whole 16-day window is one long stretch of poor surf conditions. There’s no standout session, no hidden gem to get excited about.

From Tuesday afternoon, August 4th, right through to Wednesday afternoon, August 19th, it’s the same story over and over. The wind is a persistent cross-onshore, blowing from the east or east-northeast at 12 to 22 mph. That means lumpy, choppy, and just plain messy water. The swell is coming from the east, with a short, weak period of 6 to 8 seconds. Heights bobble around 3 ft to 5 ft, but with that wind and short period, it’s just not worth paddling out. The combined swell energy is mostly weak to moderate, sitting between 60 and 357, but it’s all wasted energy.

The water temperature on that first Tuesday is a warm 84°F, which is about normal for this time of year – no real anomaly there. But even that can’t sweeten the deal.

We’ve got a solid 16-day gap here with no real recommendations. For a spot like Outers, which is an exposed reef break that’s fairly consistent, this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. The wind just won’t play ball. For a surfer, there’s nothing to chase. If you’ve got a kite, the consistent cross-onshore wind and moderate swell might look more interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a washout. Hang tight, forecasts can change.

Rusty.
