The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it – Grand Blvd is looking pretty flat and funky for the next stretch. You’ve got a long dry spell with almost no surf worth paddling out for. The real chance of anything decent doesn’t roll in until Thursday, August 27th, and even then it’s not a sure thing. The water temp is dead on average for the season, nothing weird there.

For the first week and a half, the combined swell energy is mostly under 100, which tells you the waves have no juice. Swell heights are 1 to 3 feet, with periods under 8 seconds – that’s weak, short-period wind swell. Winds are all over the place, mostly onshore or cross-onshore. Even the few clean mornings with offshore wind can’t make it happen because there’s just no swell.

The first sign of life shows up Thursday morning, August 27th – we get a 2ft swell from the SE with a 13-second period, which is a real groundswell with some push. The wind is offshore from the NW, clean and glassy. The combined energy is moderate at 116. The afternoon picks up to a 2ft swell from the SE at 12 seconds, with a solid offshore wind from the NNW. That’s the best combo in the whole outlook. Remember, a long period groundswell like this can run a bit straight on a beach break, so it might not be perfect, but it’ll be the only window with clean conditions and actual wave energy.

The real standout is the morning of Thursday, August 27th. Clean offshore breeze, moderate energy (116), and waist-high groundswell. If you’re keen, that’s your session. After that, Friday the 28th morning has clean cross-offshore wind and a 2ft swell, but the period drops to 10 seconds and the energy eases off a bit (77).

Otherwise, it’s a long wait. There’s pretty much a 10-day gap with nothing worth getting wet for until that Thursday. Forecasts can change, but right now, that Thursday morning is the only bright spot.

Rusty.
