The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast is pointing to one spot that’s got the goods again and again, so I’ll be keeping my eyes locked on it.
The next two weeks are all about one break: Gilligans. It’s a reef setup, very consistent, and it’s exposed to the southwest swell. The water temp is sitting at 86° – that’s about 1° warmer than average for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a touch of tropical warmth.
We kick off on Wednesday, July 15th, with a solid morning session. Swell is 6 ft from the SSW, with a long 15-second period (groundswell), and the combined energy is pumping at 1404 – that’s strong wave energy. Wind is a light cross-off from the ESE at 6 mph, so the surf is clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but with that size and power, it’s not one for beginners. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
The standout of the whole forecast though – and I mean the real gem – is Monday, July 20th, in the morning. Swell bumps up to 6 ft from the SSW, period is a very long 17 seconds, and the combined energy hits 2057 – that’s strong to very strong. Plus, the wind is glassy from the east at just 3 mph. That’s as good as it gets. Clean, powerful, long-period groundswell lines reeling down that reef. This is where you want to be.
After that, the size drops a bit but stays fun. On Sunday, July 19th, the afternoon shows a glassy 3 ft swell from the SSW with a super long 18-second period, but it’s small. Still, with glassy conditions, that’s a sneaky good session for a longboard or a log.
Through the rest of the week, we see a mix of clean and choppy conditions. Saturday, July 25th, is worth a mention – morning has offshore NE wind at 6 mph on a 2 ft SSW swell, and the afternoon goes glassy with a 3 ft SSW swell. Clean and small, but clean.
From the 22nd through to the 27th, it’s mostly cross-shore winds and smaller swell, with energy dropping into the hundreds (moderate to weak). The surf is there, but it’s not going to be special. The end of the month, around July 30th, shows a pulse of energy coming back – 4 ft to 4 ft from the SW with a very long 19-second period, and combined energy in the 1500s, but the wind is cross-shore, so it’s not going to be as clean as those earlier days.
If you’re an experienced surfer, the clear winner is the morning of Monday, July 20th. That’s the one. The rest of the run is a steady mix of good-to-okay. Keep your wetsuit handy.
