The Lowdown

Hey, I'm Rusty. Let's break it down.

Alright, mate, we've got a solid run coming up at Telescopes, a reef break that's exposed to the SW swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there. The first week kicks off with a bit of a slow start, but the real muscle shows up next week.

The action starts Friday morning, July 17th. We're looking at a 4ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds. The energy is moderate (761), and with a light cross-offshore breeze, it's clean. This is a good, solid reef wave, so the long period will make it wrap in nicely. Friday afternoon gets even better – the wind goes glassy, making it picture-perfect.

Saturday, July 18th, keeps the good times rolling with a 4ft SW swell, still a long 14-second period. The morning is glassy again, absolute magic. The afternoon gets a bit of a side-shore wind, but it's still surfable.

Sunday, July 19th, is a write-off. The wind picks up onshore and the surf gets choppy and messy. Give it a miss.

Monday, July 20th, is where we start to see the real juice. The swell jumps to 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, and the energy is strong (1668). This is for the advanced crew – it's a powerful wave. The wind is light offshore in the morning, then glassy in the afternoon. This is a true standout.

Tuesday, July 21st, holds at 5ft with a clean 14-second period. It's still a bit of a handful for beginners, but the wind is offshore and glassy, so the conditions are pristine.

The forecast drops off a bit Wednesday through Friday, July 22nd to 24th. The swell hangs around 3ft to 6ft, but the wind is up and the period drops, making it less appealing. The energy is moderate to weak, and the conditions are just marginal.

Now, the second week gets interesting again. Saturday, July 25th, the afternoon cleans up with a light breeze and a 5ft swell, bringing back some hope. Sunday, July 26th, and Monday, July 27th, are small and glassy – perfect for a longboard or a fish.

The pick of the entire 16-day window, however, is the last few days of July and the start of August. Thursday, July 30th, the morning has a 3ft SSW swell with a massive 20-second period, but it's the afternoon that's a standout: 4ft, 21-second period, glassy conditions, and a massive energy reading of 1705. This is world-class stuff.

Then, Friday, July 31st, is a barn-burner. We're looking at a 7ft SSW groundswell, 18 to 19 seconds, and energy readings over 2700. The wind is glassy. This is expert territory – it's a big, powerful, long-period reef wave. Absolutely pumping. Saturday, August 1st, holds at 7ft, still glassy, and still a ripper.

So, the standout sessions are the glassy windows on Monday, July 20th, and then the whole run from Thursday, July 30th, through Saturday, August 1st. A word of caution: the crowds at Telescopes can be a factor, so be ready to share the peak. Get on it, but respect the reef.

Rusty.
