The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk Telescopes. This is a deep-water reef, and it’s got a real pulse over the next couple of weeks, but you gotta be patient and know what you’re doing. This is an advanced wave, no place for the faint of heart.

The real action is a bit of a slow burn. The best window is a late bloomer, but when it hits, it’s gonna be special. The first few days are building, but the wind is a bit of a pain. The real standout is the late July into early August stretch. That’s the one you want to circle on the calendar.

Let’s get into it. Monday the 20th of July, we’ve got a solid 6ft SSW groundswell rolling in with a very long period of 17 seconds. The wave energy is very strong (1688). Early morning, a light offshore breeze from the ESE has it clean, excellent for experienced surfers. That afternoon, the wind swings to the south and goes cross-shore, and the quality drops. That morning session is the pick of the first few days.

Tuesday the 21st is a bit of a letdown. South-East wind is moderate and cross-offshore, but the swell is already easing.

It’s a pattern of dropping swell and funky, gusty winds for the next few days. The energy stays moderate (around 966 down to 216) and the consistency is there, but the wind state is mostly cross-offshore, which isn’t your friend at a reef. It’s not gonna be the typical clean, perfect Telescopes.

The real magic starts to show up on the 30th of July. Thursday morning, a new 2ft SSW groundswell with a monster period of 19 seconds pushes in. The energy is jumping up to 617. The wind is a glassy, light ESE breeze. The water is going to be dead flat. This is the start of something real good.

Then, we get to the absolute standout. The 31st of July, Friday. Morning has a 4ft SW swell with a 17-second period. The wind is glassy from the NE. The energy is strong (1032). By the afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5ft, still from the SW, period dropping slightly to 16 seconds, but the wind is glassy from the west. The energy is climbing (1105). This is the best session on offer. Clean, long-period groundswell, perfect for a reef. It’s going to be an absolute machine.

The 1st of August, Saturday, is another smoking day. Glassy conditions all day with a 4ft to 5ft SW groundswell. The energy is very strong (1421). The morning has a light easterly breeze, the afternoon is dead calm. This is a two-day run of Triple-A quality.

The good times roll into the 2nd of August. Sunday morning has a 5ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and glassy NE wind. The energy is very strong (1071). That’s a solid, powerful wave for the experienced crew. The afternoon stays glassy but the swell drops a touch.

The 4th of August, Tuesday, closes the window with a 4ft SSW groundswell, moderate energy (626), and a light offshore wind from the north. It’s not the peak of the run, but it’s a clean, solid option.

The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bit of a grind. The real gold is from Friday the 31st of July through Sunday the 2nd of August. That’s when Telescopes will be firing with clean, long-period groundswell and glassy winds. Get out there if you’ve got the stones.

Rusty.
