The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Telescopes.

We’ve got a solid run of swell on the horizon, but it’s not all clean. This is a consistent, exposed reef break that needs a south-west groundswell, and we’ve got that coming in from the SSW. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing crazy.

The action kicks off Friday morning, August 21st. We’re looking at a 6ft SSW swell with a long 15-second period, which is proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong at 2279, so there’s plenty of push. The wind is a cross-off from the SE, keeping it clean, but the score says it’s marginal due to tide. Friday afternoon is slightly better for experienced surfers, with a 6ft swell and still clean, though there’s a risk of storms.

Saturday morning, August 22nd, brings a bigger 7ft SSW swell with a 16-second period. That’s a lot of water moving, and with a combined energy of 2261, it’s powerful. The wind is a bit stronger as a cross-off from the SSE, 12 mph, so it’s clean but the size is getting into expert-only territory. Saturday afternoon drops to 7ft, but the wind swings more cross, making it choppy. Not the best.

Sunday sees the swell dropping to 5ft, but the wind stays cross-off, keeping it clean. The energy is down to 1271, so it’s more manageable, but still decent for a paddle. Monday and Tuesday are smaller, with Tuesday morning at 6ft and clean – that’s a good one for experienced surfers, with a nice 15-second period.

The standout window is the end of the first week and into September. The morning of September 1st is the absolute best on offer. That’s a Tuesday, a full week and a half out, so it’s a long-range call, but it looks promising. We’ve got a 7ft SSW swell, 18-second period, combined energy of 3097 – that’s strong, very strong. The wind is light offshore from the E at 3 mph, making it glassy. This is a real treat for the experts. The afternoon is still big but with a cross wind, so less ideal.

September 2nd, Wednesday morning, is nearly as good – 6ft SW swell, glassy with ENE wind at 3 mph, and energy at 1756. That’s clean, powerful, and a bit smaller than the day before, so it’s still a top pick.

After that, the swell holds through the first week of September, with Thursday the 3rd offering clean 6ft waves in the morning, and Friday the 4th dropping off a bit but still surfable. The run then fades into the second week, with smaller, less consistent energy.

The biggest highlight is the morning of September 1st – that’s the one to circle. It’s a big, clean, powerful SSW groundswell with offshore winds. For a reef break like Telescopes, that’s about as good as it gets. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it’s worth it.

Rusty.
