The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf for the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got a solid run of groundswell coming in from the south-southwest, and the main show is all at Telescopes. This is an advanced reef break, so you need to know what you’re doing out there. The water is sitting at 86°, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.

The first decent window kicks off on Tuesday, July 14th. The morning is looking clean with a 4ft SSW swell rolling in at a long 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, with a combined energy of 1269, so there’s plenty of push. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, keeping things tidy. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but that long period means the sets will be well-spaced, and on a reef like this, the waves will be well-shaped and powerful. The afternoon turns a bit cross, so it’s a morning session kind of day.

Wednesday and Thursday mornings (July 15th & 16th) offer similar conditions: clean, 4ft SSW swell, with light cross-off winds. The energy drops a bit into the 800s and 600s, but it’s still fun. Friday morning, July 17th, holds up with a 4ft SW swell and a 16-second period, keeping the quality high.

Saturday, July 18th, is a standout. The morning is glassy. Absolutely flat water. The swell is 4ft from the SW, and with zero wind, it’s going to be a dream. The energy is moderate at 570, but the conditions will be perfect. For a reef break, that’s as good as it gets.

We hit a rough patch from Sunday, July 19th, through Monday, July 21st. Sunday is a wipeout with thunderstorms and onshore winds, and the swell drops and turns sloppy. But Monday, July 20th, brings a new pulse. The swell jumps back to 5ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 1494. The wind is clean cross-off in the morning and afternoon. That is serious, powerful groundswell. Over 5ft on a reef is too big for beginners, and at 5ft, it’s in that expert-only zone. The waves will be thick and heavy.

The week after that, from July 22nd to the 29th, the swell backs off a bit, mostly in the 3ft to 5ft range, but the wind stays favorable (cross-off/offshore) for most of the mornings. The period drops into the 9-10 second range for a few days around the 23rd and 24th, which makes it a bit weaker and more short-period, but still rideable. The last few days, July 26th to 29th, see some glassy windows and clean conditions, but the swell is smaller, around 2ft to 3ft. It’s a decent end to the run, but nothing to get too excited about.

Overall, the call is easy. Tuesday morning, July 14th, and Monday, July 20th are the heavy hitters for size and power. But for pure, perfect conditions, Saturday morning, July 18th, with that glassy water, is the session you don’t want to miss.

Rusty.
