The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, switching to feet and Fahrenheit for the land of the free. We’re dialled in on Telescopes, and only Telescopes, for the next sixteen days.
The surf kicks off on Monday morning, 17 August. It’s clean with a 4ft SSW swell (836 energy), but nothing to get wild about. Monday afternoon drops to 3ft. Tuesday the 18th bumps up to 6ft in the morning (2237 energy), with a cross-off wind keeping it tidy, but the afternoon gets a bit of a cross-chop with the wind swinging. It’s okay, not the best.
Now for the standout. Wednesday morning, 19 August, is where you want to be. We’ve got a solid 8ft SSW groundswell with a very long 18-second period. The combined energy is 3833, so there’s serious power. The wind is a light cross-off, making it glassy and clean. This is excellent, but for experts only – anything over 8ft at a reef break like Telescopes is heavy. The long period means more push, better shape, and longer lulls between sets, which helps you get outside. Crowds are possible when it’s firing like this.
Thursday 20 August is nearly a mirror: 8ft in the morning (3297 energy), easing to 8ft in the afternoon with a light breeze and clean conditions. Another excellent day for the advanced guys. Friday 21 August backs off to 6ft and 5ft, still clean but not the same bite.
The weekend has Saturday 22 August at 7ft and 7ft, clean and steady. Sunday 23 August is around 5-6ft. Then from Monday 24 August through Wednesday 26 August, the swell fades to 2-4ft, mostly weak and marginal. The energy readings drop to between 603 and 1441. Still clean, but not exciting.
Just as you think it’s done, Thursday 27 August delivers a nice surprise: a clean 4ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and a light breeze, 1028 energy – excellent for the experienced. Friday 28 August is 4ft, but Friday afternoon is the real sleeper: glassy conditions, zero wind, and a 4ft SW swell with 676 energy. That’s a rare moment of pure calm. Saturday 29 August is small with a 2ft, 20-second period swell (872 energy) in the morning, still clean. Sunday 30 August picks up to 6ft (2038 energy) with a 17-second period and light breeze – another excellent morning for the advanced crew.
Best on offer? Wednesday 19 August and Thursday 20 August. That 8ft, long-period groundswell with clean winds is the top of the heap, but it’s for experts only. For the average surfer, Saturday 22 August or Sunday 30 August give you solid, clean waves without the heavy danger. Rest of the time is clean but small or weak.
Rusty.
