The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaking for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid, drawn-out run of Southern Ocean groundswell heading our way. It’s not going to be a single monster day, but a steady pulse of solid, long-period swell that keeps the breaks alive for days. The window really opens up on the morning of Tuesday the 14th and runs hard through the weekend, with a second, slightly bigger pulse hitting the following Monday the 20th. The energy is moderate to strong, with readings in the hundreds and even pushing into the thousands (1617) on that Monday.
The standout spot is Telescopes. This is a consistent, exposed reef that loves a solid SW groundswell. The water temp is sitting at 86°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday morning, July 14th is your first real highlight. We’re looking at a clean 4ft SSW swell riding a very long 18-second period. The combined energy is a solid 1279. Winds are light and cross-off from the SSE, keeping the face clean. This is excellent, powerful surf for experienced surfers. The long period means it’s going to handle the reef beautifully, with real shape and power.
Wednesday morning, July 15th is a bit of a sleeper. The swell drops slightly to 4ft, but the period is still a meaty 15 seconds. The kicker? The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the SSW, by the afternoon. That afternoon session will be as clean as it gets.
Monday, July 20th is the big one. The swell jumps up to 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period. The energy is pumping at 1617. Winds are light and cross-off. This is expert territory – not for the faint of heart. It’ll be powerful, consistent, and the sets will be proper. The long period means the lineup will have some lulls between sets, but when they come, you’ll want to be in position.
There are also some nice glassy windows toward the end of the week on the 25th and 26th, with 4ft to 4ft SW swell, but the energy is a bit lower. Still worth a look if you missed the main event.
All in all, this is a very good run. The first big pulse on the 14th and the bigger one on the 20th are the ones to aim for. Get on it.
Rusty.
