Table - best surf conditions forecast for Fano Sassonia over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this next stretch is a tough one for the Italian coast, specifically around Fano Sassonia. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell of flat, small, and choppy conditions before a tiny window of something that might be rideable, but definitely not a classic.
Right now, the water is running at a very unusual 81°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a strange one, but it doesn’t help the waves.
For the first eleven days, from Saturday July 11th right through to the night of Tuesday July 22nd, it’s a real struggle. You’ll see a few tiny bumps of 0.7ft to 1ft, mostly from the ESE or ENE with periods of 3 to 4 seconds – that’s pure wind chop, no energy to speak of. The combined energy is a weak 2 to 3 (2-3) most of the time. The wind is all over the shop, switching from glassy mornings to onshore and cross-onshore slop in the afternoons. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
Then, on the morning of Wednesday July 22nd, we finally get a pulse. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NNE with a 6-second period, and the combined energy hits a moderate 131 (131). The wind is light and cross-offshore from the WSW, making it glassy and clean. The surf report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a stand-out, but it’s the closest thing to a surf we’ll see. The difficulty is beginner level, so if you’re a total grom or just want to get wet, this is your only real shot. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have company.
That little window closes fast. The afternoon of the 22nd turns into choppy 2ft from the NE, and then it’s back to flat and onshore winds for the 23rd, 24th, and 25th.
The morning of July 24th brings another small pulse of 4ft from the NNE, again with a 6-second period and moderate energy (110). The wind is clean and cross-off from the WSW, but again, it’s just “surfable.” The afternoon on the same day gets bigger, hitting 5ft from the NNE with a stronger combined energy of 203 (203), but the wind swings hard onshore from the E at 16 mph, turning it into a messy, choppy mess. That’s too big for beginners, but not clean enough for anyone else.
That’s it. The rest of the month runs flat and dry. Honestly, unless you’re absolutely desperate, I’d leave the board in the car. The setup on these beach breaks, with the onshore winds, looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a proper flat spell, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on the sky.
That’s the long and short of it. Stay patient.
Rusty.
