The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Fano Sassonia over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s looking pretty flat and quiet out there. If you’re hoping for a proper session, you’ll be waiting a while. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with hardly anything worth paddling for.
Let's start with Monday the 17th. Nothing on offer. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are also a write-off – tiny, weak bumps with onshore chop that’s just messy. The water here is sitting at 84°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
Thursday the 20th morning is the first time we see a little something. A tiny 1ft swell from the ESE, period of 4 seconds, with a light offshore wind. The combined energy is next to nothing (4), but at least it would be clean. Not worth rushing for though. Friday the 21st morning is similar – 1ft ESE, period 5 seconds, light offshore – again clean but very weak.
Now, Saturday the 22nd is actually your best bet across the whole window. It’s not big, but we’ve got glassy conditions all morning and afternoon. The swell is tiny at 1ft from the ESE with a 5-second period in the morning, shifting to 1ft from the NNW in the afternoon with a 4-second period. Combined energy picks up slightly to 13 in the afternoon. It won’t be barrels, but if you’re desperate for a slide, that glassy water will make it fun on a longboard or a foamie. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect a few others with the same idea.
After Saturday, the surf drops off again. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are flat. Tuesday the 25th afternoon might see a tiny 1ft from the NE with a gentle offshore wind, but it’s barely a ripple (energy of 2). Wednesday the 26th has a moderate offshore but zero swell.
There’s a slight uptick on Thursday the 27th afternoon – 2ft from the NNE with a 5-second period, combined energy of 23. But the wind is onshore, so it’ll be a bumpy mess. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are similar – tiny, weak, and mostly onshore or choppy.
Nothing else stands out after that. The 30th and 31st are flat, and the 1st of September brings another tiny 1ft ESE swell with glassy morning conditions, but again, it’s small and weak.
Overall, if you’re a kitesurfer, the moderate cross-onshore and choppy days might offer something, but for paddle surfing, we’re in a long, flat stretch. Hang in there – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
