The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a pretty grim stretch of surf for Encuentro. The pattern is stubbornly locked in with a persistent east wind blowing cross-shore, and the swell is just not arranging itself for any quality. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up until 28 July, and even that’s a marginal call. That means there’s a solid week of nothing worth paddling out for from the start of the forecast.
Monday 20 July through to Monday 27 July: No good options. The swell ticks over at around 4 ft to 6 ft from the east, but the period is short (6 to 8 seconds), so it’s weak, disorganised stuff. The wind is a constant cross-shore, mostly moderate to fresh, making for a lumpy, cross-chop mess. The energy is mostly moderate, with readings like 189 and 263, but none of it is clean enough to surf. Forget it.
Tuesday 28 July – Morning: Now, here’s the only sliver of hope. The morning has a bit of a window. Swell from the east at 5 ft with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind turns cross-offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. The wave comment says “clean.” The energy is ramping up too (284), so there’s some push. This is the standout of the entire forecast. It’s not epic, but it’s the only time the wind cooperates and the surf is rideable. For a break that’s exposed to the NNE swell direction, this east swell isn’t a perfect match, but the clean conditions might just make it work for a few hours. This is a better option for intermediate to advanced surfers given the 5 ft size. Crowds are possible at Encuentro, so don’t expect solitude.
Tuesday 28 July afternoon through to Tuesday 4 August: Back to the same old story. The wind swings back to cross-shore, lumpy, and the surf quality flatlines. The swell tries to stay around 4 ft to 6 ft, but the energy is wasted by the wind. The energy values climb to 319 on 29 July afternoon, but it’s all messy. The last few days show the swell dropping off, with a flat entry on 3 August afternoon. There’s nothing here to get excited about.
So, bottom line: hold out for the morning of Tuesday 28 July. That’s your one shot at something clean. Everything else is a write-off.
Rusty.
