The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
First up, we're looking at a bit of a mixed bag. The forecast is loaded with energy, but a lot of it comes with messy wind or just too much size. Dee Dees is a reef break, exposed to the south swell, and it's fairly consistent. The water temp is sitting dead on average for this time of year at about 53°, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
The first real sniff of something good isn't until Monday, August 24th. We've got a solid SSW groundswell pushing through, but the issue is the size. Morning sees 8ft of swell with a 13-second period, and the afternoon drops slightly to 7ft. The wind is light and cross-shore, keeping things relatively clean, but the swell is just too big for this break. It's one for the experts only, and even then, it's a big call. The combined energy is massive, hitting 2186 and 1353 respectively, so there's a ton of power, but it's just not the right fit.
Now, Thursday, August 27th, is a real tease. The morning is absolutely glassy with a 3 mph northerly breeze, and the swell is a pumping 7ft from the SSW with a very long period of 18 seconds. The energy is through the roof at 2880. But again, it's just too big. This is a reef break, and with that period and size, it's going to be a washing machine. The afternoon is still big but the wind picks up and goes cross-shore, so it's still a tough one.
We then hit a bit of a dry spell with poor conditions from the 28th through the 31st, with strong winds and lumpy, messy surf.
The run of the show looks to be Wednesday, September 2nd. The morning has a clean offshore breeze from the east at 6 mph, and the swell drops to a more manageable 6ft from the SSW. The period is a solid 14 seconds, and the energy is strong at 1381. This is a real standout for experienced surfers looking for a clean, powerful session. The wind is light, the conditions are clean, and the swell is lined up. The crowds are a possibility here, so get in early.
The following days, September 3rd and 4th, also look promising. Thursday morning and afternoon both have clean cross-offshore winds and a consistent 6ft SSW swell, with energy in the 500-600 range. Friday morning, the swell drops to 4ft, but with a light offshore breeze from the SE, it'll be a fun, clean option for a wider range of surfers. The afternoon on Friday sees a smaller 3ft swell and a gentle offshore, making it a nice, cruisy session.
After that, we're back into the wind-affected stuff from the 5th onwards, and by the 7th of September, we're looking at another massive 10ft swell that's just too big.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute best bet in the whole 16-day window is the morning of Wednesday, September 2nd at Dee Dees. If you miss that, the Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th sessions are your next best bets for clean, surfable waves.
Rusty.
