Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Dee Dees.
First off, the water temp is sitting at 55°, which is about bang on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The week ahead is a bit of a mixed bag, with a fair bit of wind to deal with. We’ve got a pulse of solid S swell coming through, but it’s pretty much wasted by strong cross-shore winds. Tuesday afternoon (7th July) sees the first bit of action with a 5ft S swell, but it’s a bit blown out with a 16 mph ESE cross-off wind, so it’s only marginal. Wednesday and Thursday (8th and 9th July) get bigger, pushing 7ft to 13ft, but the wind is howling cross-shore at 19-25 mph, making it messy and lumpy – that’s a pass for a paddle board. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The first real standout window comes late in the week. Saturday afternoon (11th July) is the pick of the first week. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the S, but with a very long period of 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The wind goes light and glassy, swinging to a light 3 mph SE cross-off, which will have the reef looking clean. The combined energy is a solid 866 (moderate), and for a reef break like Dee Dees, that long period will wrap in nicely. Expect clean, fun waves. It’s a fairly consistent spot, so the chances of a wave are good, but it can get crowded here sometimes, so keep an eye out.
The next good window is Sunday morning (12th July). The swell is a bit smaller at 3ft from the SSW, but the period is still a very healthy 14 seconds. With a light 6 mph NNE cross-off and clear skies, it’ll be glassy and clean. It’s a smaller day, but for a reef break, that long period will still offer some fun lines.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Monday 13th right through to the start of the second week, the surf drops off, the wind is messy, and the waves are too small or too onshore to bother with. There’s a big spike of SSW swell around 17th-19th July, hitting 15ft, but it’s accompanied by brutal onshore winds, making it a total write-off – way too big and messy for anyone.
Finally, a second standout appears on Monday morning (20th July). The swell has dropped to a manageable 6ft from the SSW with an 8-second period, but the wind is light and offshore from the NNE at 6 mph. The combined energy is 687 (moderate), and the forecast is for “very good surf conditions.” This is a long-range call, so treat it as promising but less certain. Dee Dees is a reef, so it should handle that swell direction well. It’s a solid option to keep an eye on as we get closer.
Rusty.
