The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s get into it. Dee Dees has a rough two weeks ahead, but there is one day that’s got my heart pumping. We just have to dig through a bunch of junk to get there.
The start is a total loss. Tuesday the 18th is lumpy with a howling cross-onshore wind and messy, disorganized waves. Not your day. Wednesday the 19th has some size—about 13 feet from the S—and the water’s sitting at a normal 54° for this time of year. But that's the problem, it's way too big for the spot. That much power on a reef is just a washing machine. This is one for the experts and their big-wave boards only.
Thursday the 20th fades fast and is just marginal. You’ll be hunting for waist-high slop. Friday morning the 21st is a small reprieve. The wind goes light N, giving you a clean cross-off breeze. The swell is a playful 5 feet from the S, with a nice 13-second interval. It’s clean and you might get a few fun ones, but the window is short. The afternoon wind kills it, so it’s an early session.
Then the lights go out. From Saturday the 22nd all the way through to the end of the month, it’s a flat, messy stretch. The swell energy drops into the weak zone (in the low hundreds), and the wind is either blowing a gale from the NW or stuck onshore. It’s a desert. For days, we’re looking at nothing but knee-high dribble and chop. This is a real dry spell, and honestly, it’s pretty normal for the area to have these blank runs, so don’t get too down about it.
Now, for the one you’ve been waiting for. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, the 2nd of September. It’s a long way off, so treat this as a promising lead rather than a guarantee, but the long-range models are showing a serious pulse of energy pushing in. We’re talking a big 10-foot swell from the S, with a strong energy reading of 3197. The period is 10 seconds, so there’s power behind it. The wind is a fresh cross-shore, which adds a little texture to the face but isn't a total killer. This is a major swell for Dee Dees. That kind of size and power will make the reef a heavy, serious spot. Unless you’ve got years of experience in big, thick waves, stay on the beach for this one. For the few who are brave enough, it could be a day to remember, but it’s also a day that demands total respect. The following afternoon backs off a bit to 7 feet, but the wind turns more onshore, so it’s still a gnarly prospect.
Before that, there’s another little gem hiding in the rough. On Friday afternoon, the 28th of August, the wind turns light SE and cross-off, giving you some clean, workable lines. The swell is a comfortable 4 to 5 feet from the S with a nice 12-second period. It’s a proper, clean surf with enough push to make it fun. That’s your most likely chance for a decent session in that long, dry stretch.
So, that’s the story. A whole bunch of nothing, one absolute monster of a day to look forward to, and a couple of smaller windows of clean fun. Keep your eyes on the 2nd of September, but check back closer to the time.
Rusty.
