The Lowdown
Hey crew, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Dee Dees in feet and miles per hour.
We’ve got a bit of a tease right off the bat this Friday afternoon, the 21st. You’re looking at clean 5ft southerly swell with a nice 13-second interval, light NNE cross-offshore breeze at about 6 mph. The water is 53°, pretty normal for this time of year. There’s moderate energy in the water. It’s gonna be a real fun session, and the clear standout early on.
Don’t get too stoked though. From Saturday morning the 22nd, it goes downhill fast. A strong NNW wind kicks in, swinging to NW and building to nearly 31 mph by the afternoon. Wave heights drop right off and it’s just messy, choppy slop. That rough spell sticks around for a few days. The only other thing worth noting is a big pulse of SSW groundswell hitting Monday the 24th. The period is a clean 12 seconds and the energy is huge. Problem is, it’s pumping at 8ft in the morning and still 7ft in the afternoon – just too much size for this reef. Wind is light cross-shore, but the swell is simply too big for it to break well.
Tuesday and Wednesday the 25th and 26th are frustrating. There’s still some decent long-period SSW energy – 14 and 15 seconds – but the NNW winds ruin it, making it lumpy. Conditions are only marginal at best. That poor run of quality continues right to the end of the month.
As we roll into September, the bad form keeps up. Strong onshore winds and bigger blown-out swells on the 3rd see 10ft southerly swell, but it’s a total mess with 31 mph onshore wind. That’s more of a kiteboarding setup.
But here’s the silver lining. The last couple of days in the outlook, Saturday the 5th of September, are the real winners. We get a beautiful 4ft groundswell from the SSW, a long 13-second period, and perfect conditions. Saturday morning offers a gentle offshore breeze, and by the afternoon it turns absolutely glassy. That is your window. Crowds are possible at Dee Dees, but if you paddle out for that Saturday afternoon glass-off, you’ll have it all to yourselves.
Rusty.
