The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Dee Dees.
We’re staring at a bit of a wait, to be honest. The first few days are a write-off with messy, cross-onshore winds and a dodgy swell. Sunday the 19th is a no-go – 6ft to 7ft of SSW swell, but it’s got a 16-second period and the wind is junk, cross-on or cross, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. Not worth paddling out for.
The real standout is Monday morning the 20th. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got a solid 8ft of SSW groundswell with a very long 18-second period, and it’s glassy – dead calm. The water is sitting at 55°F, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is massive (3580), and the wind is true offshore. This is a reef break, so that long-period swell will line up beautifully. It’s going to be clean, powerful, and consistent. The only catch – it might be a bit much for beginners at 8ft, but for the experienced crew, this is premium. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-shore, but the swell bumps up to 10ft (energy 5372), so it’s expert-only territory.
Tuesday the 21st still has some punch. Morning brings 7ft SSW swell (14 seconds) with a clean cross-off breeze from the NNE. Energy is 1622. Nice and clean. The afternoon drops to 6ft with a lighter 13-second period, but still clean. Still good waves for the experienced surfer, but not as epic as Monday.
After Tuesday, the quality drops off a cliff. Wednesday the 22nd has a small 4ft S swell, glassy in the morning but weak – energy is only 341. Then from Thursday the 23rd all the way through to the end of July, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. Strong winds, lumpy chop, blown-out surf. There’s a big gap of no good surf from the 23rd to the 31st.
Now, looking way out, Thursday the 30th of July has a massive 16ft SSW swell forecast, with a 12-second period and light offshore wind in the morning. The energy is enormous at 7296. But that’s huge – only for the most experienced chargers, and it’s a long way off, so treat it with caution. The following day, Friday the 31st, still has a solid 8ft S swell with a clean cross-off breeze, but again, it’s a week and a half away.
For the first week of August, Saturday the 1st has a small 4ft S swell and clean morning wind, but it’s weak (energy 405). After that, it’s back to strong winds and messy conditions through Sunday and Monday.
So, to wrap it up: Monday the 20th of July, morning session is your absolute best bet – glassy, solid groundswell, and clean. Tuesday the 21st morning is a solid backup. After that, you’re waiting until the very end of the month for another big pulse, but that’s a long-range gamble.
Rusty out.
