The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Dee Dees. We’ve got a solid run of groundswell, but this reef break gets real picky. The water temp is around 54°F, about average for the time of year.
Wednesday the 19th kicks off with a massive 13ft S swell, 14-second period, and the combined swell energy is off the charts at 6331. Wind’s cross from the south at 12 mph—too big for this spot unless you’re tow-in. Thursday the 20th drops to 6ft with cross-on wind from the SW at 6 mph—lumpy and marginal.
Friday the 21st is the gem. Morning light, cross-offshore from the NE at 6 mph, swell 5ft out of the south, 15-second period—that’s a long-period groundswell. Clean faces, combined energy at 1095 (moderate to strong). For experienced surfers only since it’s over 5ft. Saturday and Sunday get blown out by strong to near-gale cross-winds, 31 to 28 mph, and the swell period drops to 6 seconds—total mess.
Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th is a loss. Winds stay fresh to strong cross-shore, 19 to 25 mph, with lumpy, messy conditions. Swell around 4ft to 2ft, but the wind kills it.
Thursday the 27th morning offers a semi-clean window: cross-offshore from the north at 6 mph, 4ft SSW swell with a short 8-second period—weak energy at 296. Surfable but nothing special. Friday the 28th morning is a step up: 6ft S swell with 14 seconds, cross-offshore from the north at 12 mph—clean and strong energy (1166). Another good one for experienced surfers.
After that, it’s small and weak through the weekend. Monday the 31st morning serves up a big 12ft SSW swell with a short 7-second period and glassy off-shore from the east at 3 mph—energy strong at 1121, but too big for the reef. Tuesday 1st September and Wednesday 2nd September are the same story: 10ft to 12ft swells with clean winds but way too big. The late call is Thursday 3rd September: both morning and afternoon give clean off-shore from the east, swell dropping to 4ft and 4ft from the south, 9-second period—weak energy, but glassy and small, fun for a log.
Best standouts: Friday the 21st and Friday the 28th, for experienced surfers with clean conditions. The big days are pure expert territory. Small glassy day on the 3rd is a nice wind-down.
Rusty.
