The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way.
Alright, the next two weeks are a real mixed bag. We’ve got some serious, heavy-duty swell on the way, but it’s going to be a game of patience. The real standout window is this weekend and into Monday, but you’ve got to be sharp. The water is sitting at a pretty normal 55°F, so no surprises there.
The first proper call is for Dee Dees on Saturday afternoon, the 18th of July. We’re looking at a solid 7ft SSW groundswell rolling in with a very long 22-second period. The combined energy is massive at 4197, so there’s a lot of power in the water. The wind is light and offshore from the west, which is a major positive. However, this is a reef break, and with that much size and period, it’s going to be a serious, heavy wave. It’s not for the faint-hearted. If you’re an experienced surfer who knows the reef, it could be a classic session. For beginners, it’s a no-go.
Sunday the 19th offers some relief in size, with 6ft and 6ft SSW swell, but the wind switches to a cross and cross-onshore, messing up the surface. The energy is still high (1886 and 1570), but the conditions are just marginal. I’d give it a miss.
Now, Monday morning, the 20th of July, is your other standout. The swell is 8ft from the SSW with a 19-second period, and the wind is glassy from the ESE. That’s the recipe for perfection. The energy is huge at 3654. Again, this is a big reef wave, and over 8ft it’s for experts only, so at 8ft, it’s in that advanced-to-expert territory. The afternoon gets bigger at 10ft, with even more energy (5372), but the wind goes cross-shore, taking the shine off. The morning is the moment.
Tuesday the 21st is a bit of a letdown. The swell drops to 7ft in the morning (still big), but the wind is cross-offshore, offering clean conditions. The afternoon is better for experienced surfers, with 6ft SSW swell, clean conditions, and light offshore wind. The energy is 1079. It’s a good session, but not the standout.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Wednesday the 22nd all the way through to Tuesday the 29th of July, the surf is small, weak, or just blown out. The swell drops to a paltry 4ft on Wednesday, and the energy is a mere 364. It’s mostly poor with strong onshore winds. There’s a big dump of 12ft SSW swell on the 26th, but it’s accompanied by 15-18 mph cross-onshore wind, making it a choppy, ugly mess. That setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The window reopens on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning brings a clean 6ft NW swell, with light cross-offshore winds. The energy is low at 294, and the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and disorganized. It’s a surfable, ordinary wave. The afternoon is similar.
And that’s it for the forecast. The first week is the real deal for the brave, and the second week is a long, quiet wait.
Rusty, signing off.
