The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Dee Dees over the next couple of weeks.
The pattern starts with a real bang, but it's a double-edged sword. We've got a massive, long-period groundswell from the SSW pushing in, packing some serious energy. The water temp is sitting at 54°F, which is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
Right out of the gate on Monday, July 20th, we have a glassy morning with a 8ft SSW swell – that's a solid 18 seconds of period and a combined energy of 3543 – that's some serious, powerful water moving. The problem is, it's just too big for this spot. It's a recipe for a washing machine, not a surf session. The afternoon gets even bigger at 10ft, but the wind picks up to a light cross-shore, making it messy. This one is a pass for the paddle crew.
The real standout, the one you're gonna want to circle, is Tuesday, July 21st. The swell drops to a much more manageable 7ft in the morning, still from the SSW. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNE, which is going to groom those waves into perfection. The period is still a solid 14 seconds, so there's plenty of push. This is an excellent window for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds similar clean conditions with a 6ft swell.
After that, the forecast turns into a bit of a dud for a while. Wednesday, July 22nd, through the end of the month sees a lot of onshore and cross-shore wind, junky, short-period windswell, and generally poor conditions. There's a lot of lumpy, choppy, and messy water out there, with quite a few days where the wind is roaring. It's a quiet period.
We then get a little glimmer on Saturday, August 1st. We've got a clean, glassy morning with a 7ft SSW swell, 10-second period, and 1129 combined energy. This is a very good window, but it's still a bit of a handful for the average punter. The glassy conditions make it a real treat for those who can handle it. The afternoon is also glassy with a 6ft swell.
The next real highlight is a bit further out. Monday, August 3rd, in the afternoon, we get a clean 5ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and 1060 combined energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SE. This is another excellent session for experienced surfers, with clean, powerful lines rolling in.
The far end of the window, around August 4th, starts to see the swell size bumping up again towards the 7ft+ mark. The conditions are clean, but it's getting big for Dee Dees again. That's a pattern to watch.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is Tuesday, July 21st. That's your cleanest, most manageable swell window. The second choice is the glassy sessions on August 1st, and then that Monday afternoon, August 3rd, is worth keeping an eye on. The rest of the time is mostly a write-off.
Rusty.
