The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's get you the skinny in feet and miles per hour.
So, the first thing I see is that there's a whole lot of swell on the way, but the early part of the week is going to be a washout for us. We've got a massive pulse of energy heading for Dee Dees, but for a couple of days it's just going to be way too big for that reef. You’re looking at a solid 13ft southerly swell on Wednesday the 19th, and even at 10ft Wednesday afternoon, that’s expert territory only. You’d be a madman to paddle out there.
So, the first real chance to get a wave is on Thursday the 20th. The swell drops to 5ft out of the south and the wind is going to go glassy. The afternoon session on Thursday is where it's at – clean, smooth, and that's the kind of surf that reminds you why you live for this.
Friday the 21st is the true standout. The morning kicks off with a sweet 5ft southerly groundswell and that period is a long 16 seconds. That long period stuff is gold for a reef like Dee Dees, it will wrap in and set up perfectly. With a light cross-offshore wind from the NNE and clean conditions, this is the best on offer. This is an expert spot on a good day, and this is a good day. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird to report.
As we roll into the weekend, a storm system moves in. Saturday the 22nd is a right-off with a near gale and tiny windswell, and Sunday is not much better. There's a big gap of nothing really worth getting wet for from Saturday the 22nd all the way through to Wednesday the 27th. A few small windows of OK conditions, like Thursday afternoon with a 5ft, 15-second southerly swell, but the wind is messy, so it's just marginal.
Looking further out, we get a nice reset. Sunday the 30th of August looks promising with a glassy afternoon and a solid 4ft southerly groundswell – that’s a good time. Then we get another monster pulse of energy coming in on Monday the 1st of September, with a 7ft southerly swell and glassy conditions. That’s a big call, but if it cleans up, that is a true standout day. That one is for experienced surfers only, though, as it's over 5ft.
The real cherry on top looks to be Wednesday the 2nd of September. Glassy conditions, a 7ft southerly groundswell with a 15-second period. That is a long-range call, so don't pin your whole life on it yet, but if it comes together, that will be an epic day at Dee Dees. It's going to be crowded, tables turned, that spot ("Dee Dees") is exposed and it can get busy, but conditions like that make it worth fighting for.
Rusty.
