The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the scoop on the waves at Dee Dees for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so let’s get into it.

Right off the bat, August 23rd is a write-off – Sunday morning’s got rain showers and a messy 28 mph cross-shore wind, with only a tiny 1ft S swell. The water’s sitting at 53°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing to write home about there. The afternoon’s no better, with a cross-on breeze and a weak, short-period 7ft NW windswell. Surf’s basically non-existent.

There’s a gap of a few days with no real recommendations until the 26th. Wednesday morning, the 26th, is a glimmer of hope. The wind swings light from the NNW, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze. The swell is a modest 4ft from the SSW, but with a lovely 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell, boys. Combined energy is moderate (486). It’s not massive, but it’s clean and rideable.

Then we hit a big ugly stretch. From the 27th right through to the 31st, it’s mostly poor conditions. Strong winds, messy chop, and lumpy seas. The 31st sees a 10ft SSW swell roll in, but with a strong cross-on breeze, it’s just a washing machine. On the 31st afternoon, the wind eases a bit, but that swell is still too big for Dee Dees – over 8ft, so it’s expert territory only. Combined energy is massive (2402), but the wind’s still cross-on, making it choppy.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is Thursday, September 3rd. The morning is a gem – light winds from the north, glassy clean conditions, and a 3ft SSW swell riding in on a 19-second period. That’s a very long period groundswell, which means long, lined-up waves. Combined energy is moderate (635), but the quality is what counts. The afternoon holds up too, with a 3ft SSW swell and 15-second period, still clean. This is the best on offer – a true short window of excellence.

After that, the 5th of September Saturday morning brings a surprise: a 6ft NW swell with glassy conditions. The period is only 6 seconds, so it’s a bit of a short-period windswell, but man, it’ll be clean and fun. Combined energy is low (279), but the glassy texture makes it a really good option. It’s a bit of a one-off, but worth getting up early for.

The second week gets wild. The 6th of September Sunday sees a massive 20ft SSW swell, with combined energy hitting 10343 – that’s strong to very strong. But it’s a total mess with 25 mph cross-shore winds. That’s big, dangerous, and ugly. The 7th Monday morning brings a 8ft SSE swell, with a clean cross-off breeze, but that size is only for experts. Combined energy is 1447.

So, bottom line: the best windows are the morning of September 3rd and the morning of September 5th. The 3rd is the true standout for quality, clean waves, while the 5th offers a glassy session on a smaller, short-period swell. Everything else is either blown out, too big, or just plain messy. Keep your eye on the forecast, though – it never stays bad for long around here.

Rusty.
