The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what this stretch of coast is throwing at us for the next couple of weeks. It's a mixed bag, with a slow start and some big, gnarly swells in the middle. Don't get too excited for the first few days.

The opening weekend is a total washout. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a mess. We're looking at strong cross-shore winds, messy cross-chop, and generally poor surf. The swell energy is pretty weak, reading 256 on Saturday morning. Not worth paddling out for.

Things finally start to wake up on Monday the 24th. A solid, long-period SSW groundswell is due, with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 2212. The forecast is for 8ft waves. But here’s the catch—it's an S swell, not the ideal S direction for Dee-Dees, and 8ft is big for this reef. The comment is clear: "too big for this break." That's an expert-only day. The afternoon is similar, with 8ft of swell.

Tuesday the 25th is a write-off again, with strong WNW cross-onshore winds and messy conditions. Don't even bother.

Now, here’s the one bright spot in the first week. Wednesday morning, the 26th, the wind switches to a gentle offshore easterly and the ocean cleans right up. We have a much more manageable 4ft of SSW swell with a long 14-second period. The energy is moderate at 480. It won't be huge, but with clean conditions and that groundswell, Dee-Dees could be a fun, rippable wave. It’s still not the perfect S direction, but it’s the best we’ve seen.

The afternoon on Wednesday jumps up to 7ft, and even with light wind, the warning says "too big" again. Locals only.

Thursday the 27th is a bit iffy, but the afternoon looks better with a light offshore breeze and 6ft of swell. It might be worth a look.

The rest of the week and the weekend are pretty ordinary. Friday the 28th is lumpy, and Saturday the 29th is back to strong cross-shore winds and short-period slop. Forget it.

The big standout is Monday morning, the 31st of August. We've got a powerful SSW groundswell hitting. Wave heights are forecast at a massive 12ft, with a 10-second period and a combined energy reading of 3964. The wind looks light and potentially offshore early. But the forecast is the same: "too big for this break." 12ft is a beast. This is a serious, serious swell, and only the most experienced chargers should even think about it. It’s the biggest pulse of the entire forecast.

After that, the ocean settles down but doesn't get great. Tuesday the 1st of September has some clean waves in the 5ft range, but nothing to write home about.

Then, boom. Wednesday the 2nd of September is a full-blown storm. A near-gale force NNW wind with wave heights predicted at 16ft to 18ft. The combined energy is a massive 7856. This is not surfing weather, this is survival weather. The reef will be a complete washing machine. It's more of a kite-surfing day, and even then, that wind is howling. Stay on the beach.

The rest of the week is a grim sequence of strong cross-onshore winds and blown-out surf. We finally get another clean window on Sunday morning, the 6th of September. The wind is light offshore, and we have a clean 5ft SSW swell with an 11-second period. It would be a good day, but we're far out, so treat that as a promising guess rather than a certainty.

So here’s the plan: if you’re keen, make the most of Wednesday morning the 26th. The big, dangerous swell is Monday the 31st—watch from the cliffs. The storm on September 2nd is a complete no-go. Water temps are pretty typical for this time of year, so you won't need a heavy suit.

Stay sharp.
