Alright mates, Rusty here giving you the lowdown on the local stretch.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a frustrating start. The next couple of days at Dee Dees are just not happening – poor surf conditions with messy winds and weak, short-period NNW swell. Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th are write-offs. Sunday the 5th is much the same, with a brief flicker of a 0.3ft, 15-second period swell that afternoon, but it’s just not enough to bother with.
The real action doesn’t kick off until Monday the 6th. Monday morning is a total mess – a strong SSE wind at 25 mph whipping up a cross-chop with a 7ft SSW swell – that’s more of a kite surfer’s session than a paddle surfer’s. But hold onto your boards, because Monday afternoon is where it gets interesting. The wind drops right out to a light easterly breeze, going cross-offshore, and we get a solid 12ft SSW groundswell at 10 seconds. The combined energy is pumping at 2922, a sign of serious power. This is big, clean, and offshore – proper expert territory. This wave is solid and will be barrelling.
Tuesday the 7th keeps that energy alive. Morning sees a moderate offshore breeze from the E at 12 mph, with a 8ft S swell (1322 combined energy). Still big, but the offshore flow will make for some beautiful, draining faces. Afternoon goes a bit lumpy with a light cross-shore, but the 8ft swell from the south (1235 combined energy) has plenty of push. Wednesday the 8th through Friday the 10th is a relentless run of massive, powerful SSW swells, hitting 16ft on Thursday afternoon with a combined energy of 5318. These are huge numbers, wave heights over 8ft, meaning it’s strictly for the experienced crew. The winds are mostly cross-shore, so it won’t be perfect, but the raw power is undeniable. Expect big, heavy crowds at a spot that can get packed.
After that big pulse, things settle down sharply. From Saturday the 11th through to Tuesday the 15th, we’re in a bit of a lull. The swell drops, winds turn onshore or cross-onshore, and conditions get choppy and ordinary. The water temp is sitting at 55°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – no surprises there.
The real standout, and what I’d call the best on offer, is Monday the 6th into Tuesday the 7th. That’s when we get the peak of the new SSW groundswell, combined with light offshore to glassy winds. For a reef break that’s exposed to the south and prefers an optimum swell from the south, this is the sweet spot. The size (8ft to 12ft) means it’s expert-only, but the quality of the waves with that clean wind will be unforgettable. After that, there’s a small window on Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th with another SSW pulse around 8ft to 10ft, but the wind looks a bit sketchier – some cross-off but also some cross-on action. It’s worth keeping an eye on, but nothing beats that early-week window.
Stay sharp, stay safe, and don’t even bother with the board until Monday afternoon.
Rusty.
