The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for Dee Dees.
Looks like we’re in for a bit of a slow start, but this joint is a reef that has the potential to turn it on. The first proper window of surf worth getting excited about kicks off on Friday morning, 17 July. That morning, we’ve got a clean 5ft swell out of the SSW with a light offshore wind from the NE, and with the water temp sitting about average for this time of year, it’s feeling pretty standard – not unusually warm or cold. The combined swell energy is very solid at 984 (moderate energy), and with that 14-second period, it’s a proper groundswell that will wrap in nicely on the reef. Friday afternoon takes it up another notch – glassy conditions, 5ft SSW swell, and combined energy hitting 1093. That’s clean, lined-up surf for the experienced crew.
Saturday morning, 18 July, is still very good – 4ft SSW swell with a light cross-off breeze, energy at 633 (moderate), but it’s smaller and cleaner than Friday. The standouts here are definitely Friday and Sunday. Sunday morning, 19 July, is a beauty – glassy, 6ft SSW swell, and combined energy roaring at 1915 (moderate to strong). That’s the best of the run for the first week – excellent waves for experienced surfers, and it’s a reef, so that long-period groundswell (16 seconds) will hold up beautifully.
After Sunday, Monday and Tuesday hold decent size. Monday afternoon, 20 July, is clean with 5ft SSW swell (1674 energy, moderate to strong). Tuesday, 21 July, is another standout – morning offshore wind, 6ft SSW swell, and energy at 2098 (strong). Tuesday afternoon goes glassy with the same 6ft swell and 2222 energy (strong). That’s two days straight of quality waves at shoulder to head-high plus. Crowds can happen here sometimes, so if you can, paddle out midweek.
From Wednesday, 22 July, the surf drops off. The swell eases to 4ft, and the quality takes a hit. Thursday and Friday, 23–24 July, are small – 3ft to 3ft – and the energy drops to 116–256 (weak to weak-moderate). Surfable but nothing to write home about. Then from Saturday, 25 July, through to the end of the month, it’s pretty flat or blown out. There’s a stretch of 7 days from 25 to 31 July where conditions are poor or very weak – mostly below 2ft, with cross-shore winds and energy in the 49–240 range. The only bright spot is the very end: Friday morning, 31 July, picks up a tiny 2ft ESE swell with offshore wind and 249 energy (weak). Clean, but barely rideable.
So, to sum it up: the best of this run is Friday 17 July through Tuesday 21 July. The absolute standouts are Sunday 19 July and Tuesday 21 July – both glassy or offshore, solid SSW groundswell, and strong energy. After that, it fades fast with a long quiet spell. If you can, get on it early.
Rusty.
