Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dee Dees over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get stuck into what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so listen up.
Right off the bat, we've got a stretch of decidedly average conditions. For the first few days, through Wednesday and Thursday, the swell is there at Dee-Dees, but the wind is howling out of the S-SE, solidly cross-shore and messy. The energy is moderate to strong, but with that chop, it’s a write-off. Friday looks slightly better in the afternoon, but still only marginal at best. Honestly, you’d be better off waiting.
The weekend isn’t much to write home about either. Saturday morning is flat as a tack, and through the rest of Saturday and Sunday it’s tiny, with a very long-period groundswell. That kind of long-period energy can be tricky to handle at a spot like this—it's prone to breaking too straight. There's a moment Sunday morning with light NE winds and clean conditions, but the swell is only 3 feet. You might get a sneaky one, but it’s not really on.
The real gap comes Monday and Tuesday the 14th and 15th. The wind picks up hard from the NNW, and the swell is short-period and weak. It’s just not worth paddling out. Tuesday afternoon has a bit more size (6 feet), but it’s lumpy cross-shore again. Save your energy.
Now, here’s the first little glimmer of hope. On the morning of Wednesday 16th July, the wind swings offshore from the ENE, blowing gentle and clean. We get a nice 2-3 foot groundswell from the ESE with a solid 14-second period. The energy is moderate, and the conditions are clean. It’s not pumping, but it’s honest, clean surf. Thursday 17th is similar, though the swell drops a touch.
But the standout for this whole outlook is Saturday the 18th of July. That morning and afternoon at Dee-Dees, we’re looking at clean, moderate offshore winds from the NE, a stronger 4-5 foot swell from the SE, and a 12-second period. The wave energy jumps up. The conditions are clean, the swell direction is a good match, and it’s consistent. This is the day to circle on your calendar. It’s still over a week away, so keep an eye on it, but right now it’s the best we’ve got.
Sunday the 19th is good too, with similar offshore winds, but the size drops back to 3 feet. Still well worth a paddle.
The following week starts off quiet, but keep an eye on Tuesday 21st July. The afternoon shows an interesting set-up—a light NE breeze, clean conditions, and a bigger, very long-period 16-second groundswell from the SSW. It could be a good one if the direction lines up.
And then, on Wednesday 22nd July, we see a big spike in size. The model is calling for 10 feet of short-period swell from the SSW. The winds are light and the conditions are clean, but that’s way too much muscle for Dee-Dees. That kind of size is for experts only. It’s a serious word of caution.
To sum it up: the early days are a bust, the water temp is about average for this time of year, and there’s a big gap right in the middle. The one true standout is the Saturday, the 18th of July. Get it in your diary.
Rusty.
