Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – this Dee Dees (reef) outlook is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window, and for the first eight days, it’s pretty much a write-off for a decent paddle. There’s a big gap of no real quality surf to start, so don't rush for your board just yet.
We kick off on Saturday the 4th of July, but it’s a frustrating start. You’ve got a 4ft swell from the NNW with a short period of just 5 seconds, and a moderate cross-off breeze. The combined energy is weak (101), and it’s “poor surf conditions” – honestly, not worth your time. Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th are much the same story with weak NW and SSW swells and cross-shore winds kicking up chop. The energy stays weak to moderate, but it’s not clean.
Now, Monday the 6th afternoon is where it gets interesting for the wrong reasons. A 10ft SSW swell rolls in with a period of 9 seconds and the combined energy jumps right up to 1598 – that’s a serious push. But here’s the catch: it’s flagged as too big for this break. That’s expert-only territory. The same goes for Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th. We see 8ft to 10ft swells from the S and SSE, periods of 8-10 seconds, and a clean cross-off wind. The energy is strong (926 to 1360), the winds are favourable, but it’s simply too menacing. The wave heights are over 8ft, so unless you’re a seasoned charger and this is your local slab, give it a miss.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th turn into a complete mess. The swell balloons to 13ft - 15ft from the S with a period of 9 seconds, and the energy is a massive 2336 to 3188. But with a strong breeze gusting 25 mph and a cross-onshore wind, it’s pure chaos – "strong cross-shore with messy cross-chop" and "lumpy" conditions. That's kite-surfing territory, not a clean paddle. Saturday the 11th is still messy and cross-onshore.
Finally, we get a glimmer of hope. On Sunday the 12th afternoon, things calm down. The swell drops to a manageable 4ft from the SSW, but the period stretches out to a long 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The wind goes slight air, almost glassy, with a cross-off breeze. The energy is moderate (579). This is the standout of the whole forecast. A long-period swell like that will wrap nicely into a reef setup, giving you long, lined-up walls. It’ll be clean and uncrowded. Get out there.
Monday the 13th has a small, clean 3ft SSW groundswell (12-second period), but it’s pretty marginal with a light breeze. The week after that, from the 14th to the 19th, is mostly tiny or blown out again, with some small, weak waves and messy onshores.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is mostly a right-off. The absolute highlight is Sunday the 12th afternoon. It’s not huge, but it’s clean, it’s got that long-period push, and it’s your best chance for a decent session at Dee Dees. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
