The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what we've got for the next couple of weeks.
We've only got the one spot, Dee Dees, on the menu. It's a reef break, and right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at a pretty standard 54°F for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there. The outlook kicks off with a serious thump on Wednesday the 19th, but it's too much of a good thing – that 10ft south swell is packing some serious welly with a combined energy of 4079, which is massive. That's only for the experts on a good day, and with a cross-onshore wind, it's gonna be a beast. I wouldn't be paddling out unless you're a glutton for punishment.
Things calm down a touch Thursday morning the 20th, with a 6ft south swell, but it's still cross-onshore and choppy. The real sweet spot looks like Thursday afternoon the 20th, when the wind drops to glassy conditions and we get a clean 5ft south swell. That's a lovely combo – absolutely worth slipping out for a session if you can.
Friday morning the 21st is also a cracker for the experienced crew: a 5ft south swell with a long 15-second period (groundswell), clean conditions with light offshore wind, and a combined energy of 1239. That's got proper power and shape. Friday afternoon gets a bit messy, and from Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, it's mostly a write-off. We get a lot of strong wind, lumpy chop, and small, weak swells. There's a huge gap there with nothing worth recommending.
Monday the 31st of August brings a pulse of messy 5ft north-west windswell, but the wind’s no good. That pattern drags into September 1st. Then, on Wednesday the 2nd of September, we see another big event: a solid 8ft south swell (combined energy of 951) that's going to be too big and grumpy for most, especially with that cross-shore wind. By Thursday the 3rd, it drops into the 6ft range, but the quality is still marginal with cross-shore wind.
Honestly, if you're picking one session, make it Thursday afternoon the 20th of August at Dee Dees. Glassy conditions on a clean 5ft south swell is hard to beat. Friday morning the 21st is a close second for the experienced rippers, but that Thursday arvo glass-off is the true standout.
Signing off,
Rusty
