The Lowdown
Right, listen up. Rusty here.
First up, it’s a bit of a slow start but the waiting game should pay off. Out at Dee Dees, we've got a very promising run of surf kicking off this Friday the 21st. It's not all plain sailing though; there’s a proper lull in the middle that you'll need to work around.
The water temp is sitting at 53°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises there.
That Friday morning (21st August) is your first real window. Dee Dees is a fairly consistent reef break that handles a south swell well, and we’ve got a clean 5ft S swell rolling in with a long 15-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1239. With a light NE offshore breeze, it’ll be glassy and clean. This is excellent surf for anyone with a bit of experience. The afternoon holds up too with 5ft and a light cross-off breeze, keeping things very surfable.
The weekend goes sour fast. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off, with howling 28 mph cross and cross-onshore winds that will chop everything up. That’s a solid gap of poor conditions.
Monday the 24th looks frustrating. We’ve got a massive 10ft SSW groundswell packing insane energy (2673) and light offshore winds in the morning, but the swell is simply too big for this break. It’s a genuine standout in size and power, but only for the most experienced crew. The afternoon is slightly smaller at 8ft, but still big and lumpy.
After that, Tuesday the 25th is a nice reset. Morning surf at 4ft from the SSW, clean with a north offshore breeze. It’s not huge, but the 11-second period will give it some shape and the energy is moderate (517). A good, easy day for intermediates.
Wednesday the 26th gets blown out again with strong NW winds. Then Thursday the 27th is another cracker. You’ll want to be out there in the morning for 5ft S swell with a 13-second period, clean with a light offshore breeze and combined energy of 1384. Excellent conditions again for experienced surfers. The afternoon pumps up to 8ft with a 17-second period and 3264 energy, but the data flags it as too big for the break again.
The end of the month and into September looks patchy but has a couple of real gems. That Monday the 31st of August afternoon is a proper standout: a long 17-second, 7ft SSW groundswell with light easterly offshore winds and sky-high energy (2230). It’s flagged as excellent for experienced surfers, but that period will make it very clean and powerful at the reef.
The first week of September has some decent, average-sized clean waves in the 4-6ft range, but the wind picks up again on the 2nd. The 4th of September afternoon is a real sleeper with a glassy 4ft S swell. Magic.
So, bottom line: Friday 21st morning and that Monday 31st afternoon are your two best shots.
Rusty.
