Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dee Dees over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's see what’s on the table.
First off, don't get your hopes up out the gate. The start here is dead in the water for Dee Dees. Monday afternoon all the way through to the following Saturday is plagued by cross-onshore winds, reading "poor surf conditions" across the board. It's lumpy, choppy, and messy – more of a session for a kite than a paddle board. The combined energy runs moderate to strong (647 to 4906) but the quality is shot. We get a little tease on Thursday morning – 1.7m and 1.6m from the S – but that only scores "marginal" with light cross-onshore winds. Not worth suiting up.
We get smacked Sunday the 23rd with a near gale at 60 km/h and a tiny 0.4m swell. That's a solid 10-day stretch where I can't send you out.
But hold up, because the last week of August switches the script.
Thursday the 27th of August morning is a standout. Offshore wind from the NE at 15 km/h, clean and light. We get a 1.9m NW swell. For this reef, clean offshore conditions beat the swell direction not being perfect. The energy is light (341) but the quality is there. This is the first real window.
Lock in on Friday the 28th of August morning – this is the one. A 1.9m SSW swell with a very long period of 14 seconds. The water temp is average for this time of year (12°), the wind is gentle offshore from the N, and the whole thing is rated "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." Combined energy is strong at 1487. That is a proper groundswell peeling down a reef. Crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might have a bit of company, but that’s life.
Saturday the 29th morning is still solid: 1.2m SSW at 12 seconds, clean with a light N breeze.
Sunday the 30th morning holds at 1.9m S swell at 10 seconds, still clean under light N winds. Energy is moderate (745).
Monday the 31st goes glassy – E wind at 5 km/h, 1.1m S swell, calm as a lake. Small, but clean.
For the beginners among you, watch out: by Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon, it jumps to 2.3m SSW at 13 seconds with fresh cross-shore wind. That’s expert-only territory on this reef.
So here's the bottom line: eat the wind for 10 days, then the real surf kicks in from Thursday 27th through Monday 31st of August mornings. Friday the 28th is your best shot for that long period, clean groundswell.
Rusty.
