The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Dee Dees.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but things are shaping up for some real quality sessions if you’re patient. The water temp is sittin’ right around 54°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off. Thursday the 20th is a no-go with light onshore breezes and only marginal, lumpy conditions. Friday the 21st is where we start to see some life. The morning is looking choice: chest-high 5ft southerly swell with a solid 15-second period – that’s proper groundswell, and the northeast wind is going to keep it clean. The combined energy is a solid 1239, which is moderate. This is a real standout for the experienced crew. The afternoon holds up too, but it’s a little smaller.
Then Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd get absolutely smashed by strong winds, turning the place into a mess. Not worth paddling out. Monday the 24th is a big one. Morning brings a clean 6ft SSW swell with a 13-second period and light offshore winds – that’s 1283 energy, excellent stuff for experienced surfers. But the afternoon? The swell jumps to 10ft with a 14-second period, and that’s just too big for this reef. That’s expert-only territory, and even then the wind is cross-shore. Only the brave should even look at it.
After that, we hit a dry spell. From Tuesday the 25th right through to Friday the 28th, it’s a mix of strong winds and messy, weak waves. Nothing worth your time. The combined energy drops way down, and the wind is just all wrong.
The weekend of the 30th and 31st is where the next real window opens. Sunday the 30th afternoon is a beauty: a 4ft SSW swell, 15-second period, and glassy conditions. That’s 883 energy and it’s going to be clean as a whistle. Monday the 31st morning is also a winner with a 5ft SSW swell, light offshore winds, and 731 energy. Expect some very good waves.
But hold on. The first of September brings another monster. Tuesday morning shows a 8ft southerly swell with a 15-second period, and a massive 2696 energy. That’s going to be pumping, but it’s way too big for this break. Again, experts only, and the wind is cross-shore, so it’s going to be a lumpy, heavy affair. The rest of the first week of September fades into weak, onshore slop.
So, the true standouts? Friday the 21st morning is your first real call. Glassy, chest-high groundswell, and clean. The absolute best of the whole run is Sunday the 30th afternoon – glassy conditions, waist-to-chest high, and a long period swell. That’s as good as it gets for Dee Dees in this window. The second week is a mixed bag with that massive swell on the 1st, but it’s a high-risk, expert-only bet.
Rusty out.
