The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next two weeks across the Barvas region are a proper battle. There’s a lot of swell on the table, but the wind is going to be a real pain in the backside for most of it. We’re looking at a long stretch of challenging conditions, with only a few brief windows of hope.
The surf kicks off from Thursday the 16th, but honestly, it’s nothing to write home about. We’ve got a small WNW swell around 3ft, a period of 12 seconds, and a weak combined energy of just 194. The problem is a cross-shore NNE wind at 12 mph is making a mess of it. The water temperature is sitting at 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when the waves are poor.
The whole weekend and into the following week is a tough watch. The wind clocks onshore or cross-onshore day after day, with speeds mostly between 9 and 19 mph. The swell size fluctuates, from a tiny 1ft to a more promising 6ft on the 23rd, but it’s all blown out and lumpy. The energy levels start to climb, hitting 388 on the 23rd afternoon, but the quality is just not there for a surf. It’s that kind of setup where you’d be better off looking at a kite.
The real power shows up around the 24th and 27th of July. We’re looking at a significant run of swell from the WNW, with heights hitting 10ft on the 24th morning and a massive combined energy of 1511. The period on the 27th stretches to a very long 12 seconds, which is proper groundswell. But again, the onshore and cross-onshore winds are fresh to strong, blowing 19 to 22 mph. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy, and challenging day. The wave energy is strong, but the wind is the enemy.
The absolute standout in this whole period is a tiny, fleeting moment on Thursday the 30th of July. In the morning, the wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the NE. The swell is only 2ft from the NNW, with a weak energy of 71, but it’s clean. It’s the only time you’ll get a smooth surface. The break is at Barvas (Lewis), a reef setup that’s fairly consistent. The crowds are rare, so you’ll likely have it to yourself. The water is a touch warmer than average. It’s not a big day, but if you’re after a glassy, clean wave, that’s your moment. The rest of that day goes back to choppy onshore junk.
So, to sum it up: the next two weeks are a story of plenty of swell, but poor wind. Don’t get excited by the big numbers unless you’re an expert looking for a battle. The real highlight is that brief glassy morning on the 30th. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecast, but that’s your best bet for a clean, fun session.
Rusty.
