The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Barvas (Lewis). This is a reef break, and it’s usually a pretty good spot for beginners when it’s working. The water temp is sitting at 58°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got a bit of a dry spell coming up first. From Saturday the 22nd right through to Wednesday afternoon the 26th, it’s looking pretty grim. The wind is all over the place, mostly onshore or cross-on, and the swell is weak and short period. The water is messy and choppy. You’re not going to want to paddle out for that.
Now, Monday the 24th of August is where things start to get interesting. It’s the standout window in this first week. The morning is looking clean with a gentle cross-offshore breeze and a solid 7ft swell from the WNW. The period is a nice 11 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a solid 1003 (moderate), and the report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." Because it’s over 5ft and close to 8ft, it’s getting a bit too much for beginners, but for the rest of you, it’s going to be quality. The afternoon holds up as well, with a cleaner 6ft and lighter winds. This is the pick of the first week.
We then have a few days of smaller, cleaner surf on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the swell drops off fast. Wednesday morning on the 26th is only 2ft, so it’s really just a chance to get wet if you're desperate.
Then we hit a real blank spot. From Thursday the 27th of August all the way through to the end of the month, the wind is a mess. It’s cross-on or cross-shore, and the swell is either weak or just too lumpy. The 29th and 30th see some push in size – 6ft to 7ft – but it’s all blown out and messy. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.
We get into the first week of September, and it’s a bit confusing. The 2nd of September sees a solid 8ft to 8ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be a bit of a battle. The combined energy is strong (1021 on the 2nd afternoon).
Now, the big story for the end of the forecast, and this is a real long-range tease, is Thursday the 3rd of September. The conditions are absolutely perfect. The morning is glassy, with an 12ft swell from the west and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 2458 (very strong). The wind is light, the tide is favorable... but the report is clear: the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. At 12ft, this is only for experts, and even then, it might be maxing out the reef. It’s a similar story right through the 4th and 5th of September, with huge 10ft to 13ft swells and clean offshore winds. The energy readings are through the roof, up to 3608. It’s a world-class setup for someone, but it’s a promise that is a week and a half away, so treat it with a bit of caution. The 6th of September still has size, but the wind is howling offshore at 25 mph, which makes it super clean but a nightmare to paddle into.
So, the one true standout in the near term is Monday the 24th of August. For the long-range, keep your eye on the 3rd of September and beyond, but only if you’re an expert and you’re ready for a big, powerful wave.
Rusty.
