The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you. Looking at the next 16 days for this stretch of coast, it’s a tough run. The whole first week is a write-off, and for a good while after that, the conditions are just not playing ball. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf with messy, lumpy, cross-onshore winds and choppy seas. The wind is relentless, coming from the ENE and E, and it’s just ruining any chance of a clean wave.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't come until the very end of the period, on Monday, September 7th. That morning, the wind finally drops and swings around to a light NNE breeze, going cross-offshore. That’s the kind of wind that makes the ocean look like glass. The swell at Waialua Rivermouth will be around 6 ft from the ENE with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (657). That’s a solid groundswell.
But before that, it’s a long wait. From Sunday, August 23rd, right through to Saturday, September 5th, the surf forecast is poor. It’s all cross-onshore or cross-shore wind, with a fresh breeze right through the mornings and afternoons, keeping the waves lumpy and chopped up. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're getting skunked.
At the end of that period, on Saturday, September 5th and Sunday, September 6th, the swell actually gets bigger. On Saturday afternoon, we see 7 ft swell from the ENE with a period of 11 seconds, and the energy jumps up to strong (1445). On Sunday morning, it’s even bigger, with 8 ft from the NE at 11 seconds and very strong energy (1747). That’s a lot of power, but the wind is still cross-shore, so the surf will be a messy, chunky mess. It's only for experienced surfers, and honestly, with that wind, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than a clean paddle session.
So, the only standout in the whole 16-day window is the morning of Monday, September 7th. That’s the one to circle. The forecast is promising, but it’s still a week away, so keep your fingers crossed. Waialua Rivermouth is a fairly consistent spot, but it can get crowded, so expect company if you make the call. The swell is 6 ft, which is a good size, and with clean, light winds, it should be the best we’ve seen in a long time.
Rusty.
