The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a long look at the Trigg Beach stretch. This is a spot that’s fairly exposed to a WSW swell, and it’s a beach and point setup.
Right now, the water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
We’re looking at a solid run of clean surf starting from Monday morning. Sunday morning is a bit of a write-off: 8ft of WSW swell, but that cross-on wind and a big combined energy of 2728 makes it feel lumpy and marginal.
Monday, 20th July, is where it gets interesting. The morning is glassy with a light NNW breeze, 5ft of WSW swell, period around 13 seconds, and a combined energy of 822. That’s clean, glassy, and well-shaped—a real standout. The afternoon holds up OK with 5ft, but the wind turns cross-on.
Tuesday morning, 21st July, is another beauty. Clean offshore wind from the ENE, 5ft of SW swell with a 14-second period, and energy at 865. That’s clean, punchy, and the swell direction matches the optimum WSW. This is a top pick for the week.
Wednesday, 22nd July, keeps the run going. Both morning and afternoon are clean with offshore winds, 5ft of SW swell, and periods around 13 seconds. Energy is moderate at 757 and 1155. Consistent, clean, and fun.
Thursday, 23rd July, is also clean with offshore winds, 5ft of SW swell, 14-second period. Energy is 817 in the morning and 678 in the afternoon. Solid.
Friday, 24th July, the size drops to 3ft. The morning is clean with cross-off wind, but the afternoon turns glassy with a SE breeze. Energy is around 400, so it’s weak but glassy.
Saturday, 25th July, similar story: 4ft to 4ft of WSW swell, glassy conditions in the afternoon. Energy is low, around 436 to 499. A small clean day.
Sunday, 26th July, the swell drops further to 3ft in the morning, but the afternoon sees a 2ft SW swell with a long 16-second period, energy at 482. That’s tiny but clean.
Now, Monday, 27th July, things get bigger and messier. The morning has 5ft of WSW swell with a 15-second period, but it’s cross-shore and choppy, energy at 1569. The afternoon turns into 7ft with a fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy conditions. Not great.
From Tuesday, 28th July, through to the end of the forecast, it’s a rough stretch. The swell gets bigger—up to 15ft on the 31st—but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, often strong, and the water is blown out. There’s a gale on the 30th with 13ft to 15ft swell and energy readings over 10,000. That’s serious energy, but for paddle surfing, it’s a mess. If you’re into kite surfing, the setup on those days might be more interesting.
For the best of the best, I’d say Monday, 20th July morning, and Tuesday, 21st July morning, are your standouts. Clean, glassy, good energy, and the swell is solid. After that, it’s a slow decline into wind and chop.
Remember, forecasts can change, but for now, get out there early next week.
Rusty.
