The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way.
Right off the bat, the next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got some serious swell energy on the way, but the wind is going to be a real problem for most of it. The water is sitting at 64° at Trigg Beach, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Tuesday, July 14th is actually your best early bet. We’re looking at a solid 7ft groundswell from the WSW with a very long 15-second period, packing a strong 1655 units of energy. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ENE, 12 mph in the morning, easing to 9 mph in the arvo. It’s glassy and clean. This is a proper session for experienced surfers – the size is up there, but the quality will be there for the crew that knows what they’re doing. The energy is strong.
Wednesday, July 15th steps down. The swell drops to 5ft, and while the wind is cross-off in the morning, it’s a bit stronger at 16 mph. The afternoon goes cross-shore. It’s rideable, but nothing special.
Thursday, July 16th is a write-off. The swell bumps up, but the wind goes onshore and lumpy, and by the afternoon it’s a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph with a messy 8ft swell. That’s a hard pass.
Friday, July 17th morning has a brief window of clean 5ft surf with a light cross-off wind, but it’s short-lived. The afternoon gets blown out again.
Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th are no-go zones. We’ve got a massive 13ft swell on Saturday with howling onshore winds – that’s huge, expert-only if you’re crazy, and even then, the wind will make it a washing machine. The energy is extreme (5868 and 7578 units). Sunday is smaller but still messy.
We then hit a gap of poor conditions right through to Monday, July 20th, where the wind is onshore most of the day.
Tuesday, July 21st morning is a standout. The swell is 8ft from the WSW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, which is a bit of a bummer. But the magic is the wind: glassy, complete calm at 3 mph. That’s a rare treat. The energy is moderate (752 units), but for a beach-and-point setup like Trigg, that short period will keep the waves from breaking too straight. It’s a session for the early birds who want clean, if a little unruly, waves.
After that, it’s back to onshore wind and poor conditions from Wednesday, July 22nd through to the end of the month, with only a few fleeting moments of promise.
Looking further out, Monday, July 27th morning looks promising. A clean 4ft swell from the SW with a long 18-second period, and a light offshore cross-off wind from the NE at 3 mph. The energy is moderate (873 units). That’s a proper clean, lined-up groundswell for the point.
Tuesday, July 28th afternoon has a glassy 4ft swell from the SW. It’s small, but clean.
The real standout in the long-range is Wednesday, July 29th morning. We’re looking at an 8ft groundswell from the SW with a 17-second period – that’s very long period and packing a massive 3924 units of energy. The wind is a perfect offshore from the East at 3 mph. For the experienced crew, this is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a serious swell, but with that offshore wind, Trigg could be world-class. Don’t expect any crowds, though, because it’s a daunting size for most, but the quality will be unreal.
For the rest of that week, it’s small and mostly onshore, with a few clean moments but nothing to get excited about.
Overall, the best bet for the next week is Tuesday morning, July 14th. For the long-range, mark Wednesday, July 29th morning. The forecast is less certain that far out, but it looks like a beauty.
Rusty.
