Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Looks like we’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Trigg Beach, but it’s not all smooth sailing. This stretch kicks off with a bang, then gets a bit messy in the middle, before cleaning up again for a few choice sessions. Stick with it, because there are some crackers in there.
We start Friday the 3rd of July: Trigg Beach is the only break in play, and it’s a beauty. A clean 6ft SW groundswell, with a long 14-second period, is rolling in under a light easterly offshore. The wave energy is strong, sitting at 1349. Water temp is 65°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thicker steamer. Conditions are clean and inviting, and while the swell is a touch big for beginners, it’s prime for intermediate and experienced surfers. Friday afternoon holds similar, dropping slightly to 6ft but still clean with that same offshore breeze.
Saturday the 4th sees the swell hang around at 5ft from the SW, but the wind swings NE and then NNE, turning cross-off and a bit stronger. It’s still surfable, but the magic of Friday is gone. Sunday the 5th is a write-off: cross-shore and onshore winds, rain, and the swell drops right off to 3ft. Poor conditions all day.
Monday the 6th is a different story. The swell jumps back up, with morning waves at 8ft from the WSW and a long 16-second period – strong energy at 3263. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE, so it’s shaped up nicely. But 8ft is getting into expert territory, and it’s a beach-and-point setup, so that long period groundswell might make things a bit straight at the beach. The point should handle it well though.
Tuesday the 7th is the standout of the first week. Morning brings 8ft WSW swell at 16 seconds with a light offshore from the ESE – glassy clean, and the energy is huge at 3336. This is excellent surf for experienced crew. The afternoon gets a bit cross and messy, so hit it early.
Wednesday the 8th is smaller and mixed, with cross-shore winds and a 6ft to 7ft swell. Not a washout, but not a standout. Thursday the 9th morning though, that’s a good one: 7ft WSW groundswell, 14 seconds, light SSE cross-off wind – clean and punchy, excellent for experienced surfers.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th turn ugly – strong southerly winds, cross-shore and fresh, with lumpy, choppy conditions. The swell is there, but the wind ruins it. Not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 12th is a major relief. Morning brings 7ft SW swell at a long 16 seconds, light SE cross-off wind, clean as a whistle with strong energy (2109). Afternoon stays clean at 6ft with a gentle breeze. This is excellent surf again – get out there.
From Monday the 13th through to Tuesday the 14th, the swell drops a bit (5ft to 5ft) but stays clean with offshore winds from the ESE and E. Nice, cruisy waves for intermediates, not too big, and the energy is moderate to strong.
Wednesday the 15th sees the swell flatten right off to 3ft with fresh ENE winds – poor, not worth your time. Thursday the 16th is marginal, with a tiny 3ft to 4ft WSW swell but a super long 19-second period. That long period on a beach break can be tricky – it might break too straight, but the energy is moderate. The wind is strong though.
Friday the 17th of July – now over a week away – brings a big pulse: 10ft WSW swell, 16 seconds, massive energy at 4222. But the wind is cross-shore from the north, and by afternoon it’s onshore and howling. That’s a stormy, lumpy mess, only for kamikaze experts, and even then it looks grim. Saturday the 18th is also blown out with onshore WNW winds and rain. Not recommended.
So, the best on offer: Tuesday the 7th morning at Trigg Beach. Clean offshore, solid 8ft WSW groundswell, big energy, excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The other standout is Sunday the 12th – both morning and afternoon are clean, with solid SW swell and light winds. That’s your weekend session to circle.
Rusty.
