The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s headed our way for Trigg Beach. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so listen up.
We’re starting off with a big lump on Saturday the 18th – a solid 13ft swell from the WSW, but with a 12 mph onshore wind and a 15-second period. The wave energy is massive (6675), and honestly, that’s just too much for this break. It’s a beach and point setup, but that size with that wind is a mess. Not the day for it.
Now, Sunday the 19th morning is the standout for the first part of the week. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8ft from the WSW, but the wind goes glassy – 3 mph from the WSW. That’s a major positive; it’ll be clean. The period is a long 14 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The water’s a bit colder than normal at 64°, but that doesn’t matter when it’s glassy. This is for experienced surfers only though – over 8ft is expert territory. The wave energy is still high (2765), so expect power.
Monday the 20th morning looks tidy with a glassy 5ft WSW swell, period 13 seconds. The energy is moderate (822). Good conditions, but nothing to write home about.
Tuesday the 21st morning sees a 5ft SW swell with a cross-off breeze from the NNE at 6 mph, keeping it clean. Solid enough.
Wednesday the 22nd is where it gets interesting again. Both morning and afternoon have 5-5ft SW swells with a gentle offshore wind from the east (9 mph). Clean waves, moderate energy (841-1000). This is a very good run of surf for a point break.
Thursday the 23rd afternoon has a 4ft SW swell with a gentle offshore from the ENE. Clean, but dropping off.
Friday the 24th and into the weekend, things get poor. The swell drops to 3ft, winds go onshore and lumpy. Not worth paddling out. There’s a dry spell here for a few days.
Then a big pulse arrives on Sunday the 26th afternoon: a 6ft WSW swell with a very long 16-second period, but it’s accompanied by a 22 mph onshore wind. Too rough. Monday the 27th is still messy with a 7ft SW swell and cross-shore winds.
Tuesday the 28th morning offers a nice little window: 5ft SW swell, light cross-off breeze from the NE, clean conditions. The energy is moderate (700). A good, small day.
But the real standout in the second week is Thursday the 30th morning – a 6ft WSW swell with a very long 19-second period, and a cross-off breeze from the NNE. Clean waves, but the energy is strong (2157). For a point break like Trigg, that long period will wrap in nicely. Then Friday the 31st morning brings a massive 12ft WSW swell with a light cross-off wind from the SE. The energy is huge (6565), but again, over 8ft is for experts only. The wind is favorable though.
Saturday the 1st of August continues with the same 12ft WSW swell, but with a gentle offshore from the east. It’s pristine but massive. Only for the skilled crew.
Sunday the 2nd of August morning, the swell backs down to 10ft but stays clean with a cross-off breeze. By the afternoon, it’s 8ft with a gentle offshore – ideal for experienced surfers.
Best bet: Sunday the 19th morning for the glassy, powerful 8ft swell. Wednesday the 22nd is the other standout with clean offshores. The big stuff at the end of the month is for experts only, but it’s promising.
Rusty.
