The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
First up, the surf has been hammered by a massive swell event, so we’re looking at a bit of a gap before things calm down. The energy in the water is absolutely pumping, with readings hitting 4-digit and even 5-digit numbers, which is some serious, heavy-duty ocean. The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good steamer.
Friday 17 July is a write-off – light rain and a 22 mph NNW wind creating cross-on conditions on a 5 ft WSW swell. It’s lumpy and ugly. That big pulse hits Saturday 18 July – a raw 13 ft WSW swell, with a 15-second period, but the wind is onshore at 9 mph. The combined energy is a massive 6929 (moderate wave energy), but it’s just too big for this spot. The finder says it’s too big for Trigg. It’s a no-go for paddle surfing; this is kite-surfing territory if you’ve got the balls.
Sunday 19 July is the first real standout. A clean 8 ft swell from the WSW with a 14-second period hitting Trigg Beach (Perth, WA) in the morning. The wind is a light, cross-offshore NNE breeze at 6 mph. The combined energy is still a solid 2689, and it’s clean and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a good one, but it’s a big wave for the average punter. If you’re a confident intermediate or expert, get on it. The crowds are often here, so expect company.
Monday 20 July morning is glassy. A 5 ft WSW swell with a 13-second period, and the wind is a dead flat calm from the NE at 3 mph. The combined energy is 822 (moderate wave energy). This is a sneaky good session – clean, glassy, and manageable. The finder says “expect very good surf conditions.”
Tuesday 21 July morning is also clean, with a 5 ft SW swell and light cross-offshore SSE winds. Not a massive standout, but a solid, workable surf.
Wednesday 22 July morning is another cracker. A 5 ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the E at 6 mph. The combined energy is 905 (moderate wave energy). The waves will be clean and lined up. This is a top pick for the mid-week.
Thursday 23 July and Friday 24 July mornings are similar: clean, manageable swells around 4 ft to 5 ft with light winds. Friday morning is glassy with a 4 ft WSW swell. Good, reliable fun.
Saturday 25 July morning is glassy again, but the swell drops to 4 ft. It’s a mellow session.
Sunday 26 July morning brings a bigger swell back – 6 ft from the W with a 12-second period, and light cross-offshore NNE winds. It’s clean and punchy, with combined energy at 1556 (moderate wave energy). This is another good one for the weekend.
Monday 27 July is a write-off – strong winds and a big, messy 8 ft swell. Skip it.
Tuesday 28 July morning is glassy again, with a 6 ft SW swell and a 14-second period. A clean, powerful option.
Wednesday 29 July and Thursday 30 July are both poor – strong winds and messy conditions.
Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August are a massive, bombastic swell event – 16 ft waves with insane energy (11,801 to 14,218). This is for experts only, and even then, the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. It’s too big for Trigg. Kite-surfers might be frothing.
So, the top two standouts are Sunday 19 July for the experienced crew and Wednesday 22 July for a clean, solid session. The long-range stuff (end of July into August) is massive and speculative, but also looks like a lot of wind and chop.
Rusty out.
