The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and get you sorted for the next couple of weeks at Trigg Beach.

The window kicks off this Friday morning with a solid pulse of WSW groundswell at 8ft, with a 15-second period and light offshore easterly breeze. The water’s sitting at 64°F, which is a touch colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the hood or a good chest zip. It’s got plenty of push – the combined energy reading is a strong 2535 – and it’s clean. This is the standout of the early run.

Friday afternoon holds up at 8ft, still from the WSW, with a cross-off breeze keeping the face tidy. Saturday morning offers 7ft but the wind swings to a light cross-shore from the NNW, so it gets a bit textured, and the tide might play games. Saturday afternoon drops off with a bumpy cross-shore chop – not your friend. Sunday is a write-off for quality; the swell backs off and the wind turns cross-onshore and messy.

Now, here’s the gem hiding in the middle of the forecast: Monday the 24th. Monday morning is glassy, with a light WSW breeze, and 7ft of fast, lined-up swell from the west-southwest at 14 seconds. Combined energy is 1960, which is moderate, but the clean face makes it feel like twice the size. This is the one to plan around if you can sneak out before work. Monday afternoon fades a bit and goes onshore, so keep it to the morning.

Tuesday and Wednesday are messy – Tuesday is small and choppy, but Wednesday the 26th gets properly wild. That’s a 13ft swell with a 19-second period, but it’s blowing 25 mph cross-onshore with heavy rain. That’s not a surf day; that’s a watch-from-the-car-park day. The energy reading is a huge 10846, so there’s plenty of ocean moving, but it’ll be a washing machine.

Things settle down slowly after that. Thursday the 27th morning brings 10ft of WSW groundswell with a clean SSE cross-off breeze and a combined energy of 4963. That’s big, powerful, and for experienced surfers only – over 8ft, so if you’re not confident, sit this one out. It’s the second real standout in the run. Afternoon stays big but gets lumpy.

Friday the 28th is a nice rebound: 6ft in the morning, clean with a light SE cross-off, and 5ft in the afternoon with a light offshore. Saturday the 29th is smaller, 4ft, but clean with a moderate ENE offshore – a good day for the log or a mid-length. Sunday the 30th picks back up to 6ft but the wind gets tricky, cross-off in the morning then onshore in the afternoon.

Now, the long-range stuff, the week after that, gets messy. The 31st through the 5th of September is a run of poor surf: strong cross-onshore winds, lumpy conditions, and periods where the swell jumps to 13ft with no quality. There’s a lot of energy in the water – readings in the 4000 to 8000 range – but it’s all windblown and choppy. The last proper day with any real promise is Thursday the 27th, so if you’re chasing waves in the second week, be prepared for a waiting game. The near-term calls are solid, but those late-August and early-September options are more of a “keep an eye on it” situation.

So to wrap it up: Friday morning and Monday morning are your best bets for clean, solid surf. Thursday the 27th is bigger and more serious. The rest is either small, stormy, or just plain messy. Be smart, pick your windows, and I’ll see you out there.

Rusty.
