The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at the 16-day forecast for Trigg Beach. We’ve got a solid run of swell coming in from the WSW, but it’s not all clean sailing. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing too wild.
The first decent window opens up on Thursday, August 20. Thursday morning is the standout of the whole period. The swell is pumping at 10ft from the WSW with a 16-second period, that’s some serious groundswell energy, and the combined energy is sitin’ at 4242. But the magic is the glassy conditions with an easterly breeze. That’s going to be clean, lined-up waves, though with that size, it’s only for experienced surfers – beginners should sit this one out. The 16-second period means long gaps between sets, so paddling out is easier, but at a beach-and-point setup like Trigg, it could be a bit straight. The offshore wind is from the ESE, which is perfect for this spot.
Friday, August 21 morning is also a solid call. Still 8ft from the WSW, 15-second period, and the easterly offshore wind at 6 mph is cleaning it right up. Combined energy is 2525. It’s a bit smaller than Thursday, but still excellent for experienced surfers. Keep in mind, crowds are often an issue here, so get in early.
The weekend has some ups and downs. Saturday, August 22 morning is glassy and calm, with 7ft from the WSW and a long 17-second period. Combined energy is 2522. That’s clean, but the long period might make it a bit straight at the beach section. The wind is dead calm, which is rare. Saturday afternoon gets messy with strong cross-shore winds.
Sunday, August 23 morning has a 5ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and a cross-off SSE breeze at 9 mph. Combined energy is 1477. It’s clean, but the swell is smaller and dropping. The afternoon turns ugly with a strong SSW wind.
We hit a bit of a lull from the 25th to the 26th, with small, wind-affected surf. The swell is too small and the wind is onshore, so you’re better off staying home.
Then, Wednesday, August 26 morning sees a big spike – 12ft from the WSW with a 17-second period, combined energy of 6375. That’s a massive amount of energy, but the wind is light cross-onshore from the SW, and at 12ft, it’s only for experts. The forecast says it might be too big for this break, so be careful.
The rest of the week after that sees smaller, cleaner windows. Thursday, August 27 morning has 8ft from the WSW with a 14-second period, and an offshore ENE wind at 9 mph. That’s clean and glassy, with a combined energy of 2118. Good for experienced surfers again.
The final true standout is Monday, August 31 morning. 6ft from the WSW, 15-second period, with a clean offshore ENE wind at 9 mph. Combined energy is 2420. That’s smaller, but still solid for the experienced crew, and the wind is perfect.
Overall, the best two windows are Thursday, August 20 morning and Friday, August 21 morning. The swell is big, the wind is clean, and the energy is pumping. The long period means you’ll have to pick your takeoff spot, but it’s worth it. After that, there are workable mornings, but the crowds and wind shifts will keep you on your toes.
Rusty.
