The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what Trigg Beach has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a big, powerful, long-period groundswell hitting on Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th of August, but it’s a bit of a tease. The swell is pushing 13ft to 10ft from the WSW with a period of 16 seconds, chucking around a massive amount of energy. That’s way too much for Trigg though, even for the experienced crew. The wind is on it, so that’s a pass for paddle surfing unless you’re a madman on a big wave gun. We’ll have to wait a few days.
The first real standout, and the best on offer for the whole outlook, is Thursday morning, the 20th of August. The swell drops to a still-chunky 10ft from the WSW, but the real magic is the wind. It’s dead calm, glassy as a mirror. That’s a massive positive. The energy is still strong, and you’ll be paddling out into a clean, powerful groundswell. This is strictly for experienced surfers only. It’s not a beginner's wave at that size. The water temp is about average for the time of year, no major anomalies there.
Moving on, Friday morning the 21st keeps the good vibes going with a similar 8ft WSW swell and a light offshore breeze from the east. The energy is still solid, and the conditions are clean. It’s a great follow-up session, but the Thursday morning glass-off is the real winner this week.
The next major highlight, and the best bet in the second week, is Friday afternoon, the 28th of August. The swell is back up to 8ft from the WSW, and we’ve got a clean 9 mph offshore wind from the ENE. The energy is pumping and the period is a very long 18 seconds. This is a proper groundswell setup. Because it’s such a long period, it’ll be better-shaped and more powerful, but it can be a bit straight at a beach break. Keep that in mind; it’s for experienced surfers. The morning of the 26th is also a solid option with glassy conditions on a 6ft swell, but the 28th afternoon has more size and punch.
There are a few other windows with clean conditions, like the mornings of the 24th (6ft, clean) and the 27th (6ft, glassy), but they are more moderate in size and energy. The crowds at Trigg are often there, so expect company, especially on the standouts.
There are some rough patches too. The 23rd, 25th, 30th, 31st of August, and the 1st of September are all blown out or messy with onshore winds and, at times, serious size. The 31st of August is a write-off with a near gale and a massive 13ft swell. The 2nd of September looks like a decent cleanup with a 7ft swell and a light cross-offshore breeze.
So, to wrap it up: Your two absolute standouts are Thursday morning, 20th August, for the glassy 10ft swell, and Friday afternoon, 28th August, for the powerful offshore 8ft groundswell. Get out there for those.
Rusty.
