The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
We’re going to start off a bit slow, but hang tight. The first swell that’s really worth paddling out for shows up on Sunday the 19th at Trigg Beach, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. That afternoon we’ve got a 7ft swell from the WSW with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 1744. The wind is cross-on from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’s not perfect, but there’s some size. Water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thicker suit.
Monday the 20th morning is where it starts to get exciting. The swell drops to 5ft from the WSW, still a solid 13-second period, but the wind is dead calm – glassy. That’s a major positive. The energy is moderate at 822, and you’ll have clean, smooth waves. This is a good one for intermediates. Afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-on breeze, so make the most of the morning.
Tuesday the 21st morning is another glassy session with a 5ft SW swell, 14-second period, and light wind from the ESE. Energy is 852, clean conditions again. Afternoon the wind swings S and picks up to 12 mph, creating a cross-shore chop, so morning is the call.
Wednesday the 22nd is the standout so far. Morning has a 5ft SW swell with offshore wind from the ESE at 9 mph – clean, clean, clean. Energy is 870. Wednesday afternoon gets even better: the swell bumps to 6ft, period jumps to 16 seconds (that’s a nice long groundswell), and the offshore wind from the East at 12 mph keeps things clean. Energy is 1754. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and the long period should make for some nice shaped waves, but given it’s a beach and point setup, watch for it to be a little straight at times.
Thursday the 23rd stays good. Morning offshore winds from the ENE at 12 mph, 5ft SW swell, 14-second period, energy 817. Afternoon is a bit smaller but still clean with offshore winds. A solid run of days.
Things start to drop off Friday the 24th and into the weekend. The swell drops to 3ft and the wind is cross-off, so not great. Saturday the 25th is a write-off with poor conditions and onshore breezes. Sunday the 26th sees a 10ft WSW swell, but it’s cross-on with 15 mph wind and rain – choppy and messy. Not worth it.
Monday the 27th is a big one. The swell jumps to 13ft from the WSW, 15-second period, and the energy is massive at 7241. But – it’s too big for this break. Unless you’re an expert and don’t mind a beating, this is more of a spectacle than a session. The wind is light, but the size is just too much for Trigg.
After that, things settle down again. Tuesday the 28th morning is back to 6ft SW swell with offshore wind, clean and good. Wednesday the 29th morning has a 5ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, offshore wind, and energy at 1722 – excellent for experienced surfers. That long period will make the waves powerful and well-shaped, but again, watch for it to be a bit straight at the beach.
The first week of August brings some more size. Saturday the 1st morning has a 6ft WSW swell with an 18-second period, light wind, and energy at 1953 – excellent for experienced surfers. Sunday the 2nd morning sees a 8ft WSW swell, 16-second period, energy 3054, but the wind is cross-off, so it’s clean but a bit tricky. After that, Monday the 3rd drops off with cross-shore winds and messy conditions.
Overall, the best windows are Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and Wednesday the 29th morning. Both have solid swell, clean offshore winds, and good energy. The 22nd is more reliable being closer, the 29th is a promising long-range option but less certain. Get out there.
