Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming our way.
The next couple of weeks are a real rollercoaster for Trigg Beach. We kick off with some absolute stunners, but then a proper storm system blows in and churns everything up. You’ve got to pick your windows carefully.
The show starts Monday, July 6, and it’s a beauty. A solid WSW groundswell, pushing 8 feet, with a very long 16-second period. That’s a lot of power – combined energy is (2895). The water is a bit chilly at 65°F, about 3°F colder than usual, so a good wetsuit is a must. The morning is perfect: clear skies, a light SE cross-off breeze at 9 mph, keeping the surface like glass. This is heavy, expert-only surf at 8 feet. It stays clean right through Monday afternoon with a light offshore breeze. Tuesday morning, July 7, is just as good – another 8 feet of clean WSW groundswell with a 16-second period and a light offshore east wind. These two mornings are the absolute highlights: Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th.
Things go downhill Tuesday afternoon when the wind swings south-southwest and puts a chop on the face. Wednesday the 8th gets messy, and Thursday the 9th is a complete washout with strong, choppy onshore winds. Friday the 10th is no good in the afternoon.
But we get another clean window. Saturday morning, July 11, the wind is light from the SSE, giving us a clean cross-off breeze. The swell holds at 8 feet from the SW with a shorter 13-second period, but the energy is still high (2140). It will be a bit steeper on the beach, but the point will handle it. Sunday morning, July 12, and Monday morning, July 13, also have clean offshore winds with solid 7-foot to 6-foot surf. There’s a good run of mornings here. Tuesday the 14th starts clean again with a 7-foot WSW swell and a morning offshore. Wednesday the 15th is the sneaky good day – the morning has a stronger cross-off breeze, but the afternoon goes glassy with light NNE winds at 6 mph, making for a clean, fun 6-foot wave. That afternoon session on the 15th is another real standout.
From Thursday the 16th, it all goes wrong. A massive storm is on the way. Friday the 17th morning sees 13-foot surf – way too big for Trigg – with strong winds. The weekend of the 18th and 19th is a nightmare: 16 to 18 feet of onshore, wind-whipped slop with gusts up to 37 mph. This is a kite-surfing show, not a surfing session. The energy readings are off the charts (11827), but the quality is zero. This nasty pattern hangs around for days, with onshore winds and oversized waves right through to Tuesday the 21st. A solid week of poor to dangerous conditions.
So here’s the plan: get out there Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th at first light for the best, cleanest, most powerful swell of the whole period. The windows from the 11th to the 15th also have some good sessions. After that, it’s a long stretch of no-go.
Rusty.
