The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s what’s comin’ up for the local waves.
Alright, there’s a decent run of swell on the way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. We’ve got a solid groundswell rolling in from the WSW, with some real energy behind it, but the wind is gonna mess with the quality a fair bit. The best windows are gonna be the sessions where that offshore or glassy wind shows up. The water’s sittin’ at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent steamer.
First up, Friday the 21st of August afternoon. Trigg Beach is pumpin’ with a clean 8ft WSW swell, period of 14 seconds, and a cross-off SSE breeze at 9 mph. It’s got strong wave energy (2338), but at that size, it’s for the experienced crew. The water’s a bit colder than normal, so keep that in mind.
Saturday the 22nd of August morning is a ripper. Glassy conditions with a NE breeze at only 3 mph, cross-off, and a long-period 7ft WSW swell at 17 seconds. The energy is cranked (2522), and it’s clean. This is a standout for the whole forecast – the wind is near perfect, the swell has serious grunt, and it’s a morning session that’ll have you frothin’. The afternoon turns to rubbish though, with a 16 mph S cross-wind choppin’ up the 6ft swell.
Sunday the 23rd of August is a write-off with cross and cross-on winds making the 5ft to 6ft swell messy.
Here’s the big one: Monday the 24th of August morning. Glassy. Zero wind. A 7ft WSW swell with 14-second period, and the energy is strong (1848). It’s an absolute gem for the experienced surfer, and the glassy conditions are gonna make it look like a postcard. This is another standout – you’d be mad to miss it.
The rest of that week gets sloppy. Tuesday the 25th of August is blown out with cross-on winds. Wednesday the 26th of August sees a massive 13ft WSW swell, but with 19 mph cross-on winds and lumpy conditions, that’s kite territory, not paddle. Energy is extreme (11522), but it’s unsurfable for a regular board. Thursday the 27th of August stays messy with cross-winds and a dropping 10ft swell.
Friday the 28th of August morning is a redemption lap. Offshore winds from the ESE at 9 mph, a clean 6ft WSW swell, and it’s proper clean. The energy is moderate (972), but the wind makes it worth the paddle.
Saturday the 29th of August is small, with a 4ft WSW swell, and the following days mix in some solid swell but with cross or cross-on winds.
Sunday the 30th of August sees a 7ft, 17-second WSW swell, but with a N cross-wind, it’s not gonna be perfect.
Monday the 31st of August morning is a beauty again. Clean, cross-off breeze from the SSE at 3 mph, 6ft WSW swell at 15 seconds, and strong energy (2571). For the experienced lot, this is a cracker.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning is similar – clean, cross-off NE breeze, 7ft WSW swell at 16 seconds, and strong energy (2271). Another solid session.
There’s a bit of a lull in quality after that, with cross and cross-on winds messin’ with the 7ft to 7ft swells through until Friday the 4th of September.
Friday the 4th of September morning is a late standout. Offshore wind from the E at 9 mph, a clean 7ft WSW swell at 16 seconds, and very strong energy (3177). That one’s a late-week treat, but it’s a fair way out – keep an eye on it.
The last day in the run, Saturday the 5th of September, has offshore winds again, but with rain showers and a 7ft to 6ft WSW swell, it’s still worth a look if you’re keen.
Overall, the absolute best on offer are Saturday the 22nd of August morning and Monday the 24th of August morning. Glassy and offshore conditions with solid, long-period WSW groundswell. For the experienced crew, those are the sessions to circle. The long period will make it a bit straight at the beach, but Trigg’s point should handle it well.
Rusty.
