The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the way for Trigg Beach over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag to start, but if you can hold out, there’s some real quality waiting. The best window is the last few days of July and the first of August, with clean, solid groundswell.
The week kicks off on Friday, 17 July, with a 6ft WSW swell running at 13 seconds. The energy is moderate (1069). The morning has a light NE cross-off breeze, so it’s clean. Not a classic, but it’s the best session in the early days.
That afternoon the wind swings north and picks up, making a mess. Saturday the 18th is a total loss – an 12ft to 13ft WSW swell with strong onshore winds. Too big and too ugly. Sunday the 19th is still a bit rough with a cross-on breeze, but the 8ft morning swell has some energy (2673). It’s a wait-and-see day.
From Monday the 20th through to Thursday the 23rd, we’ve got smaller surf and improving winds. The pick of that stretch is Thursday afternoon, 23 July. The swell is down to 5ft from the SW at 14 seconds, but the wind is a clean offshore from the east at 12 mph. The water is about average for this time of year. Clean lines, good for an intermediate.
Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are small, with 3ft to 4ft swells. Not much happening, but the offshores keep things tidy.
Now, the good stuff. On Sunday the 26th of July, the afternoon session shows a 4ft SW swell with a 15-second period, and the wind is offshore from the ENE at 12 mph. The energy is moderate (780) and the conditions are clean. A nice little groundswell.
The real highlight is Wednesday the 29th of July into Thursday the 30th. Wednesday afternoon is glassy – dead calm, 3 mph from the SSW – with a 4ft WSW swell at 18 seconds. That’s a very long-period groundswell, with strong energy (1530). It’ll be clean and walled up, but the long period means it might be a bit straight at the beach. The reef and point areas at Trigg will be the go. This one’s for the experienced crew.
Thursday the 30th is the absolute gem. The morning has a 5ft WSW swell at 16 seconds, with a light ENE breeze. The energy is strong (2411). The afternoon is even better: 5ft WSW swell, 20-second period, combined energy of 2729, and a light SE cross-off. That’s serious groundswell, glassy conditions, and top-notch quality. A small window of excellence for the experienced.
Friday the 31st drops back a bit, with a 7ft WSW swell but some cross-shore wind. Still worth a look.
A couple of things: Trigg Beach can get crowded, so be prepared. And the first few days are rough, but the wait is worth it. The long-period swells on the 29th and 30th are best handled by experienced surfers, especially at the point.
Rusty.
