The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Trigg Beach.
We’ve got a solid run of solid, powerful swell lining up, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good 4/3 wetsuit.
The standout morning is Thursday, August 20th. We’ve got a clean 10ft swell rolling in from the WSW with a 16-second period. That’s serious groundswell, packing a lot of punch (combined energy of 4242). The wind is glassy from the east, so Trigg Beach will be looking epic. That’s a lot of water moving, though, so this is for experienced surfers only. The wave quality is top-notch, but the crowd is often out there, so get in early.
Friday morning, August 21st, is another good call. The swell drops a touch to 8ft, still from the WSW, and the period is 15 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the east, keeping things clean. This is still a big, powerful wave for intermediates and above.
Saturday morning, August 22nd, is offering a slightly smaller 7ft groundswell (17-second period) with glassy conditions from the NE. The energy is still strong (2731), and it’ll be a well-shaped, clean wave. Get out there early before the wind shifts.
We hit a bit of a lull after that. Sunday and Monday see the wind turning onshore and the quality dropping off. The swell sticks around, but the wind is messy.
Tuesday morning, August 25th, is a bit of a washout with a small, weak 4ft swell and onshore wind. Not worth the paddle.
Then we get a proper blast of winter. From Wednesday, August 26th, through to the end of the month, the swell is pumping big, 10ft to 12ft, but it’s getting hammered by strong onshore winds. The wave energy is massive (over 6500), but it’s going to be a lumpy, blown-out mess. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
The next real window of opportunity looks like Friday morning, August 28th. The wind goes glassy from the SSE, and the swell is a clean 7ft from the WSW. The energy is moderate (1551), and the conditions will be excellent for experienced surfers.
Looking further ahead into the first week of September, the pattern is still active. Monday, September 1st, has a moderate 8ft swell, but the wind is onshore. The best bet in that second week looks like Friday, September 4th, with a 10ft swell from the WSW and a light onshore wind. The morning looks cleaner, but it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best surf is definitely on Thursday, August 20th, and Friday, August 21st. Get on it.
Rusty.
