The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming down the line for Trigg Beach.
Right now, the first few days are a bit of a write-off. Thursday’s got a solid 5ft to 6ft of WSW swell, but the wind is howling from the north, making for a bumpy, cross-choppy mess. Not worth paddling out for. Friday morning is where things start to look up. We’ve got a 6ft WSW swell with a light cross-off breeze from the north, cleaning things up nicely. The energy is moderate (1079), and it’s a fairly consistent spot, so that’s a solid window to get wet.
Saturday is a no-go for paddle surfing. The swell jumps to 11ft to 13ft from the WSW – that’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s predicted to be too big for this break. Winds are onshore, so it’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, with that kind of power, this setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than surfing.
Sunday drops back to 8ft in the morning, but the wind is light onshore, making it a bit lumpy. The energy is strong (2265), but the conditions are marginal. Monday morning is a beauty, though. The swell sits at 6ft from the WSW, with a light, cross-off breeze from the northeast. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The waves are clean, and the energy is moderate (795). That’s a good session.
Tuesday morning brings another clean window with 5ft of SW swell and a light cross-off from the southeast. The energy is still moderate (811), and the winds are light, so expect some long-period groundswell (14 seconds) with good shape. Wednesday and Thursday mornings both look promising with offshore or light cross-off winds, 5ft to 6ft of swell, and clean conditions. The energy stays in the moderate range, so it’s not a powerhouse, but it’s surfable.
Now, the standout – and I mean the real standout – is the end of the month. On Wednesday, July 29th, we’ve got a 7ft to 10ft WSW swell, with clean offshore winds from the east. The energy jumps to strong (3214 in the morning, 4588 in the afternoon). That’s expert-level, powerful, clean surf. The period is 14 to 17 seconds, so it’s a long-period groundswell – perfect for a point break like Trigg. The afternoon session on the 29th is the best on offer, with gentle offshore winds and very strong energy. The 30th and 31st follow with more excellent conditions, but the 31st is pushing 15ft, which is too big for most.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bit of a mixed bag with a few clean mornings, but the real gold is the last few days of July. If you can hold out, the 29th through the 31st look like the best of the whole forecast. Fair warning though, the long-range stuff is always a bit less certain, but it’s looking promising.
Rusty.
