The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Trigg Beach has cookin’ for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of standout windows where it all comes together real nice.
Right now, we’ve got nothing happening until Sunday afternoon, and even then it’s pretty ordinary – rain showers, a cross-on breeze at 9 mph, and 5 ft of WSW swell. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 1326. Honestly, it’s poor, so I’d give it a miss.
Monday the 24th is where things start to look up. Monday morning is pure gold – crystal clear, glassy conditions, and a solid 7 ft WSW swell rolling in with a period of 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and with the wind being glass, the surf will be clean and lined up. Combined energy is strong at 1933. This is excellent for experienced surfers – if you’ve got the skills, get out there early.
Monday afternoon the wind swings WSW at 6 mph and goes cross-on, dropping the quality. The swell backs off a bit to 6 ft, but it’s still rideable if you’re desperate. The rest of the week, from Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th, is pretty average – cross-on winds, choppy conditions, and waves in the 5 ft to 10 ft range. That Wednesday afternoon on the 26th sees a 13 ft WSW swell with a monster 18-second period and an insane 9426 combined energy, but the wind is cross at 19 mph and it’s too big for this break – expert only, and messy with it.
Friday the 28th offers a clean-up with a SE cross-off breeze at 9 mph, 6 ft WSW swell, and moderate energy at 1023. It’s clean, fun, and worth a paddle. Saturday the 29th is the other real standout – Saturday afternoon looks sweet with offshore wind from the east at 6 mph, 6 ft WSW swell, a solid 16-second period, and strong energy at 2002. Clean waves, excellent conditions, and it’ll be a treat.
Sunday the 30th stays clean in the morning with a NE cross-off breeze and 7 ft WSW swell, but energy drops to moderate at 2155. It’s still a solid option. From Monday the 31st through to Monday the 7th of September, things get messy again – lots of onshore and cross-on winds, chopped-up surf, and waves ranging from 5 ft to 10 ft. There’s a big window of poor conditions from the 1st to the 4th of September, with winds gusting 19 mph and lumpy seas.
But then, on Sunday the 6th of September, there’s another cracker – 10 ft WSW swell with a short period of 9 seconds, but a SSE cross-off breeze at 6 mph keeps it clean. Energy is strong at 1729. And Monday the 7th of September? Huge 13 ft WSW groundswell with a 14-second period, glassy in the morning, and massive energy at 5844. But mate, that’s big – expert only, and only if you’re keen on a heavy session.
The standout is Monday the 24th morning – that glassy 7 ft WSW groundswell with perfect conditions. Second best is Saturday the 29th afternoon, with offshore wind and that same solid swell direction. Crowds? Trigg can get busy, so expect company on those good days.
The main gap with no decent options runs from Tuesday the 25th afternoon through to Thursday the 27th, and again from Tuesday the 1st of September through to Friday the 4th of September. That’s a fair few days of average to poor surf.
If you’re not an expert, keep an eye on the early sessions before the bigger swells peak. For the rest of us, the 24th and 29th are the ones to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
