The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening for Tinos.
Gotta be honest with you, the next sixteen days are a real grind. The only spot we’re looking at is Kolimbithres West (Tinos), and it’s a tough one. It’s a beginner-friendly, inconsistent spot that’s fairly exposed to the north, but the wind just won’t let up for the first week and a half.
We’re looking at a huge gap. From Wednesday, the 5th of August, right through to Sunday, the 16th of August, there’s nothing worth getting wet for. The wind is hammering, mostly from the north-northwest at 30 to 50 km/h, just tearing the surface apart. The swell is there – from 1.5m all the way up to 3.0m from the north, peaking around the 14th and 15th with a combined energy of 1131 – but the quality is just terrible. The period is short, mostly 5 to 7 seconds, and the conditions are consistently described as “poor”. It’s a lot of water moving, but it’s a total windblown mess. Honestly, with that strong north wind and solid swell, it looks more like a kite surfing setup from the 8th to the 15th than a paddle session.
The water temperature is around 24°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
But, there is one tiny window. Look ahead to Monday, the 17th of August. Monday afternoon, the wind goes dead calm. Glassy. The swell is only 1.4m from the north, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 119, so it’s not going to be pumping. But it’s surfable. This is the only time in the whole forecast where conditions are even close to clean. For a beginner spot that’s usually blown out, a glassy window like this is the standout – the only one, really. It’s your one chance to get a few fun, clean little waves if you’re patient.
After that, the wind comes back on Tuesday the 18th, and it’s back to poor conditions.
So, if you’re keen, pencil in the afternoon of Monday the 17th. It won’t be a classic, but it’s the best on offer.
Rusty.
