The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy for 13th Street. I’ve scanned the charts, and honestly, there’s nothing that’s gonna get the heart rate up. The swell is small, the wind is mostly on or cross-onshore, and the surf is just poor. It’s a tough stretch.
We start off this Saturday afternoon, August 8th, with a small 2ft SSW swell, but the cross-on wind is going to chop it all up. The water’s sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit. But you’ll be fighting for a clean face. The energy is weak at 244.
Sunday through to Thursday, the 9th to the 13th, it’s more of the same. Swell stays ankle to knee-high, mostly 2ft to 2ft, with that onshore wind messing things up. The period is long, 13 to 18 seconds, which usually means some push, but there’s just not enough size to make anything of it. The energy dips and rises but stays in that weak to moderate range (148 to 258). It’s frustrating.
Now, there is a slight flicker of hope on Friday morning, August 14th. The energy jumps to 337 with a 2ft SSW swell, and the wind is light and on. The comment says “marginal” – a 1 out of 10. That’s the best we get, but it’s still pretty poor. By the afternoon, the wind picks up and it’s back to crap.
The weekend of the 15th and 16th sees a touch more size, 3ft to 3ft, but the cross-on wind is back, making it choppy and poor. The energy is moderate, 419 to 422, but it’s wasted. The 21st has a brief bump to 4ft but with a short, weak 7-second period from the west, and it’s still poor.
All in all, this is a long stretch with no good surf. 13th Street is inconsistent at the best of times, but this is a particularly blank run. When waves are this small and the wind is this bad, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The long-period swell is there, but it’s just not translating to anything rideable at this beach break.
Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d find another hobby for a couple of weeks.
