The Lowdown
Right, I’ve had a look over the coming days at 13th Street. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough forecast for this spot. The whole 16-day outlook is basically a waiting game, with only a fleeting window of interest right at the tail end.
We start from now and it’s a pretty grim run. From Friday the 14th of August all the way through to Thursday the 27th of August, we’re looking at a string of weak, onshore wind conditions with tiny swell. The waves are barely there, and when they are, the wind is junk. The combined swell energy is weak, bouncing around between values of 75 and 420 (weak to moderate), but the wind keeps it messy. It’s a long, quiet period.
Then, things finally change on Friday the 28th of August. A solid pulse of swell arrives. We see a jump in size to 7ft from the SSW, with a period of 14 seconds – that’s a decent groundswell with some push. The combined energy hits 1657, which is strong. This is a serious step up in power. The wind stays light and onshore though, which is a shame, keeping the conditions marginal. This kind of size at 13th Street, with a south-west angle, is strictly for advanced surfers only – it will be too big for beginners at over 5ft. The long period swell (14 seconds) will favour reefs and points over this beach break, but with the onshore wind, it’s likely to be a battle.
Saturday the 29th of August sees the swell drop back to 5ft but with a shorter period of 11 seconds, and the energy drops to 526 (moderate). The wind is still light and onshore. It’s still a step up from the flat spell, but nothing clean.
If you’re an experienced surfer and desperate for some juice, the morning of Friday the 28th is the only real call in this whole forecast, but keep your expectations in check with that wind. For anyone else, it’s a write-off.
Stay patient,
Rusty
