The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
First up, the water temp at 13th Street is sitting at 70°F right now, which is a whopping 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real treat, like stepping into a bath compared to what you’d expect.
To be straight with you, the whole 16-day window looks pretty grim. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor to marginal surf. The first few days, from Monday the 20th to Wednesday the 22nd, offer tiny, weak swell. Monday morning sees a 3ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, messing it up. The combined energy is only 269 (weak), and the score is a no-go. It’s just not worth paddling out.
We’ve got a gap of several days here with no real recommendations. Thursday the 23rd is a write-off with a 3ft, 6-second short period, sloppy wind swell, and energy dropping to 76 (very weak). Friday and the weekend don’t get any better – the swell stays small, the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, and the surf is just messy.
The only real glimmer, and I mean the only one, comes on Saturday the 25th in the morning. The swell pushes up to 2ft from the SW with a nice long 21-second period. The combined energy jumps to 755 (moderate), which is the best in the whole forecast. The wind is light and onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see. It’s a marginal call, but if you’re desperate, that’s the window. 13th Street is an advanced, inconsistent break that’s fairly exposed to the WNW, so this long-period groundswell from the SW won’t be breaking perfectly straight—it might have some shape to it here. Just be aware it’s often crowded.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. The rest of the week into August is a series of poor conditions with small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds. The energy fades right out, dropping to 36 (very weak) by Sunday the 2nd of August. There’s nothing to get excited about. For an area where the breaks are inconsistent, this kind of blank run isn’t unusual. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
