The Lowdown
Alright, gather ‘round. Rusty’s here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: this 16-day outlook for 13th Street is a real bummer. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening, and the first decent wave is a long way off. The water’s sitting at 73°, which is over 6° warmer than usual – that’s a real freak of nature for this time of year.
The first few days are a total wash. Friday, September 4th, is blown out with cross-on wind and chop. Saturday the 5th is the same story. Sunday the 6th has a tiny 1-foot wave with offshore wind, but it’s too small to even paddle for. Monday the 7th brings a 6-foot swell, but it’s howling cross-on at 12 mph, turning it into a messy, choppy nightmare – that’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddling day.
The one and only highlight in this whole mess is Tuesday morning, September 8th. The swell is 5 feet from the SSW, with a solid 12-second period, so it’s got some real power (729 energy). The wind is light and onshore, but it’s clean enough to be rideable. For an advanced surfer, this is your best shot. The break is inconsistent, so there will be lulls, but those long-period waves will have some grunt. It’s not a beginner wave at that size.
After that, it’s a long, slow grind. From Wednesday the 9th all the way through the end, it’s tiny swell, onshore wind, and poor surf. The wind never sets up right for this WNW-exposed spot. The swell direction is all wrong, too.
So, the bottom line: if you’re an advanced surfer and you’re jonesing, Tuesday the 8th is your only real window. Otherwise, it’s a two-week stretch of flat, blown-out, or just plain ugly surf. A tough run, but that’s the reality.
Rusty.
