Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for our local stretch. I won’t sugarcoat it – we’re in for a long, quiet patch, so don’t be in a rush to wax your boards just yet.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The first ten days of the forecast window are pretty much a write-off for any decent waves. From Thursday, July 2nd right through to the end of Saturday, July 11th, it’s all showing as poor surf conditions. You’ll see small, weak swells in the 2ft to 3ft range, mainly out of the SSW. While the wind is often light and offshore in the mornings, which keeps the surface clean, there’s just not enough energy in the water. The combined wave energy figures are moderate, hovering between 231 and 583 (moderate wave energy), but the wave comment doesn't lie – it's poor. With a long period around 16 to 18 seconds, these groundswells have that long, drawn-out feel, but they just don’t have the push to make anything worthwhile at a fairly exposed, inconsistent advanced break like 13th Street. The water temp is sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 67°.
We get a slight flicker of hope on Monday, July 6th, with a “marginal” tag on the morning session, but honestly, with 2ft and a cross-onshore wind that afternoon, it’s still not one to get excited about. That pattern repeats on Wednesday, July 8th morning, with another “marginal” call, but again, it’s too small and inconsistent to be worth paddling out for.
After that long dry spell, we finally start to see the energy drop away further. From Sunday, July 12th onwards, the wave heights shrink even more, dropping down to 2ft and then to a tiny 0.7ft by Tuesday, July 14th. The combined energy falls off a cliff, hitting just 26 on the 14th (weak wave energy) – that’s about as flat as it gets. The swell direction tries to shift to the WNW by late on the 15th, and we see a period of 19 seconds, but with only 1ft of swell and cross-onshore wind, it’s not a goer.
For the second week, it’s more of the same. The last few days, from July 14th to 17th, show nothing but poor surf conditions and tiny waves. The best we can say is that the wind stays light or gentle, but there’s simply no swell to work with. Even with that very long-period WNW groundswell (19 seconds), it’s only 1ft, so you’d be bobbing around on a lake.
So, here’s the honest truth: there are no standouts in this 16-day outlook. Nothing worth highlighting. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the mornings are glassy, but don’t expect a wave. The forecast can always change, but for now, take a break, check the wax, and wait for the next proper swell. This is one of those blank runs that happens.
Rusty.
