The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards, but the wind is just going to ruin it for us. There is no good surf on offer in this entire 16-day stretch. The periods are short, the winds are onshore, and it’s going to be a battle for anything rideable. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but we gotta call it like we see it.
The first few days are a write-off. From Wednesday the 19th through the weekend, it’s all short-period, wind-blown mush. We’re looking at waves in the 3ft to 7ft range, but with fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions, it’s not going to be worth your time. The energy is weak to moderate at best, with values around 148 to 419, but it’s all messy. You’ll be fighting chop and onshore wind the whole time.
The start of the following week, the 24th, things get a little more interesting in size. The afternoon of Monday the 24th sees the swell jump to 8ft, but the period is a long 12 seconds. That’s a lot of energy, hitting a strong 1900, but the wind is still cross-onshore and it's going to be lumpy. This is a situation where the size is there, but the quality just isn’t. That kind of bump and chop will make it tough going, even for the more experienced crew.
Tuesday the 25th through the 27th is more of the same, with waist-to-chest high waves and persistent onshore winds. The energy dips and swells, but the quality remains poor. We see a little bit of a drop in wind on Wednesday the 26th, with a gentler breeze and the swell around 5ft to 6ft. The wave comment still says "poor surf conditions" though, so don't get too excited.
Then we hit the last week. The end of August and the start of September sees no real improvement. We’ve got another pulse of energy coming in on Saturday the 29th, with the swell up to 8ft to 8ft and the energy hitting 713 to 963. But again, the period is short, and the wind is fresh and cross-onshore. It’s all just a big, lumpy mess.
There is a slight outlier on the afternoon of Sunday the 30th. The swell drops to 3ft, but the period jumps way up to 14 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the energy is still moderate at 549. This might be the only chance for a cleaner wave, but the wind is still cross-onshore and moderate. It could be the pick of the bunch, but it’s still far from good.
Honestly, with this much onshore wind and short-period swell, this stretch is looking more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers. The whole period is a blank run, which can happen here. Forecasts can change, so let’s hope the wind gods ease up, but as it stands, your boards are safe on the rack.
Stay tuned.
Rusty.
