The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s check out what’s happening at Plage des Surfeurs. This reef break is a consistent one, and it’s been getting pulses of east swell all through the forecast, but honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first several days are looking pretty average, with a lot of marginal conditions and persistent cross-offshore east winds. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 84°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real action of note doesn’t show up until Sunday, August 30th. That morning we’re looking at 3ft waves from the east, but here’s the kicker: the period jumps to 15 seconds. That’s a proper long-period groundswell for a reef, and combined energy of 636 (moderate) means there’s some push in the water. The afternoon sees that swell settle to 4ft with a 14-second period and energy up to 866 (still moderate). These are the cleanest-looking waves of the early stretch, and with the wind staying cross-off out of the east, it might just offer a few decent ones. The long period will make it a bit trickier at the beach, but on a reef like this, it could line up nicely.
Now, the standout for the whole period is Monday, August 31st. The morning brings a solid 7ft swell from the east-northeast, with a 12-second period, and combined energy is a beefy 1090 (strong). That’s the kind of grunt that gets your heart rate up. The wind is cross-off at 12 mph, so the face should be clean. This is intermediate territory for sure, maybe a bit too much umph for beginners at 7ft, but for the experienced crew, this is the best window. The afternoon drops back to 6ft and 11 seconds, still a great wave, and the wind eases to a gentle 9 mph – glassy edges, good times.
After that, the swell fades quickly. Tuesday, September 1st morning is a 4ft dud with a 9-second period, and by the afternoon it’s a tiny 2ft from the northeast. The rest of the second week is a real drifter: mostly 3ft to 5ft east swell with low periods (7-8 seconds), weak energy, and the same cross-off wind. The last two days, September 6th and 7th, see the wind switching to a cross-shore, chopping up the surface. Nothing to write home about.
So, if you’re keen, Sunday, August 30th is a warm-up, but Monday, August 31st is the pick of the bunch. The reef should handle that long-interval energy well, and the conditions are as clean as we’re going to see for a while. Get out there if you’ve got the skills.
Rusty.
