The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for this stretch of coast. The early part of the week is a bit of a washout, so don't rush to grab your board just yet.
The first real chance to get wet is Wednesday morning, August 5th. It’s tiny, only 2ft of SW swell, but here’s the kicker: the wind is dead calm, glassy from the NE. With a long 15-second period, that’s a proper groundswell. The water is a warm 88°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s small, but it’ll be clean. The combined energy is moderate (266).
Thursday morning, August 6th is a step up. The swell comes in at 3ft from the SW, with a 13-second period. The wind is a light NNE cross-offshore, keeping things clean. The energy is building, now at 359. This is a good morning for a longboard.
Now, the real standout window opens up. Friday morning, August 7th through to Monday morning, August 10th is where it’s at. The swell picks up to 3ft - 4ft from the SSW, with periods of 16-18 seconds. That’s long-period groundswell, and it’s going to wrap in nicely. The winds are light and offshore or glassy for most of these mornings. Friday morning has a clean NNE breeze at 10 km/h, and the energy is strong at 814. Saturday morning is even better with a light NNW offshore wind and energy at 765. This is the best run of the whole forecast.
The biggest, most powerful day looks to be Friday morning, August 14th. The swell is up to 4ft from the SW, with a 17-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 1221. The wind is a clean offshore from the N at 10 km/h. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The waves will have real punch, but that long period might make it a bit shifty at the beach, so the point and sandbar setup at Petacalco will handle it beautifully.
Saturday morning, August 15th is another top pick. The swell holds at 5ft from the SW, with a 16-second period, and the wind is completely glassy from the NE. With energy at 1016, this is another excellent session for experienced surfers. The morning will be a dream.
After that, the swell slowly drops but remains rideable. The water is a comfortable 88°, a touch warmer than usual.
Remember, Petacalco is a sandbar/point break that’s inconsistent, so don’t expect a wave every minute. The best windows are early mornings, as the afternoons get trashed by onshore winds. The real winner is that stretch from the morning of the 7th through the morning of the 11th, and then those two mornings on the 14th and 15th.
Rusty out.
