The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m sizing up the next 16 days at Orofara Beach. It’s a rough road ahead with bugger all to get stoked about. The surf window kicks off Monday, August 3, but even then you’re looking at tiny, weak, short-period swell from the east, cross-shore winds, and water temperature around 79°F, which is dead average for this time of year.

Monday the 3rd, you get a small 2ft easterly windswell with a period of just 7 seconds and weak energy (65). There’s a 12 mph cross-shore wind blowing, making it messy and poor. Not worth getting wet for.

Tuesday the 4th through Thursday the 6th morning is much the same story. Swell nudges up to about 3-4ft, period stays short (7-8 seconds), and the wind is either cross-on or light cross-shore. Energy is still low (109-172). Thursday afternoon (the 6th) cleans up a little with a light cross-off breeze, but it’s only 3ft of weak (101) east-northeast windswell—you could surf it, but it’s nothing special.

Friday the 7th gets windier and choppier with cross-shore winds up to 12 mph. Swell hits 4ft by the afternoon with moderate energy (218), but the 8-second period will leave it lumpy and uninviting.

From Saturday the 8th through Sunday the 16th, things clean up wind-wise (mostly cross-off), but the swell isn’t playing ball. Saturday the 8th is clean but only 3ft of weak east swell (147-158). Sunday the 9th sees swell jump to 7ft out of the east-southeast with a short 6-second period and moderate energy (322). The wind is a fresh cross-off at 22-25 mph, so it’s clean but that short period will make Orofara a fat, choppy mess—better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Stormy conditions hit Monday the 10th through Wednesday the 12th, with risk of thunderstorms. Swell builds to 8-8ft, energy gets strong (up to 809), still short period (8-9 seconds), and winds are strong cross-off (22-28 mph). It’s clean, but the size is too big for beginners (over 5ft), and with that short period and strong wind, it’s just a blown-out wall.

From Thursday the 13th to the end (Tuesday the 18th), surf fades. You get clean conditions but smaller waves (4ft down to 1ft), often from the west-northwest with long period (15-16 seconds) but tiny (energy down to 117). Winds stay moderate to fresh cross-shore or cross-on, so it’s poor quality all around.

Truth is, there’s no standout session in this whole 16-day window. Surf quality is rated poor for nearly every session, with just a couple “surfable but ordinary” windows. The second week is a total write-off. Orofara is a fairly consistent point break, but this is a dead run. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope—it rarely stays this flat for long.

Rusty.
