The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Omaha Beach and Bar.

Straight up, it’s a tough start. The next week and a half is looking pretty flat or messy, with nothing worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf from the 2nd of August right through until the 14th, with only a tiny flicker of hope on the 14th afternoon that’s still marginal. You’ll be waiting a while.

The 2nd of August kicks off with a weak 3ft easterly that’s short period and cross-off wind, but the combined energy is only 72 – way too weak to get excited about. Sunday the 3rd and Monday the 4th see tiny 0.3ft NE swells, glassy mornings but basically no waves. The 5th is a write-off with onshore wind. The 6th is clean but tiny. Then from the 7th to the 13th, we get a jump in size but it’s all blown out onshore with rain and strong winds. The 9th and 10th see 10ft to 12ft easterly swell, but with a fresh onshore breeze and combined energy over 1400 (1435 to 2705), that’s a lot of power but awful conditions – honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Too big and messy for a beginner spot like Omaha.

The first real standout in the whole window hits on Saturday the 15th of August. We get a solid 10ft NNE swell with a period of 8 seconds, combined energy of 926 in the morning climbing to 1121 in the afternoon – that’s strong wave energy. The wind swings to a cross-off, keeping the surface clean. Now, 10ft is expert territory, so this is not for the faint-hearted. The swell direction is NNE, while the spot’s optimum is NE, so it’s a decent match. Expect a big, powerful, clean day for the crew who know what they’re doing. The 17th of August offers a last little window: 3ft NNE swell, clean offshore wind from the west, but the energy is only 80 – weak, and surfable but very ordinary.

Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild to report.

So, the call is clear: if you’re experienced and hungry, the 15th of August is your one big chance – a proper, heavy, clean session at Omaha. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
