The Lowdown
Hey, it’s Rusty. Looking at the charts for this spot, the next couple of weeks are a real test of patience. The only break that’s even on the radar is Namotu Lefts, and it’s a reef that can either give you a wave of your life or make you work for nothing.
The first decent glimpse of surf is Sunday afternoon, August 23rd. The water is a comfortable 78°F, which is dead average for this time of year. You’ve got a 4ft swell from the SSE, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit jumbled. The wind is a light 15 km/h from the ESE, blowing cross-off, so the surface is clean. The energy is only moderate (272), but it’s a start.
The absolute standout, the one you don’t want to miss, is the morning of Thursday, September 3rd, through to Friday, September 5th. This is the big show. On Thursday morning, the swell is a solid 7ft from the SSW, with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy reading is a massive 2382 – that’s strong to very strong power. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE at 35 km/h, making for near-perfect conditions. This is for experts only. That’s a heavy, long-period groundswell wrapping into a reef. It’s going to be meaty and powerful. Crowds are rare, so you’ll likely have waves to yourself, but you better be on your game.
The Wednesday afternoon before that, August 26, is also worth a look. You’ve got 6ft of swell from the SSW with a very long 15-second period and a combined energy of 1421. The wind is a gentle 15 km/h cross-shore from the SE, so it’s a little bumpy but still has plenty of push. That’s a solid session for a confident intermediate.
After that big window, the swell fades. By Monday, September 7, the swell is down to 2ft from the SSW with a 13-second period, but the wind goes glassy. The energy is weak (241), so it’s a flat, clean paddle. The rest of the forecast is a long stretch of lumpy, cross-shore junk. Don’t bet the farm on anything else.
Rusty.
