The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at a solid run of surf on the horizon, but you’re gonna have to be patient. The start of the period is a bit of a write-off, with messy winds and small, weak swell. But once we get past the first few days, things really start to fire up.
The water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, so no surprises there – just the usual tropical warmth.
The first real window of opportunity hits on Saturday, July 18th. The morning is still a bit average with a cross-off wind, but by the afternoon, the wind drops right out to a slight air, and the swell is a clean 3 ft from the SW with a long 16-second period. The combined energy is moderate (687), and it’s clean. It’s not huge, but it’s a nice start to a run.
The real standout is Sunday, July 19th. The morning brings a clean 4 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period and a slight easterly breeze. The energy is solid (1375). This is the pick of the first week – clean, solid, and long-period groundswell. The reef at Namotu Lefts will be handling this beautifully, and with the break being fairly consistent and rarely crowded, you’ll have a good chance at some special waves.
Then, Monday, July 20th is a belter. The morning is glassy with a 5 ft SSW swell, a 20-second period – that’s *very* long period groundswell – and the energy is pumping (2517). This is proper, powerful swell. It’s a serious wave, so only for experienced surfers, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s going to be epic. The wind is glassy, the conditions are clean, and the sets will be long and well-spaced.
After that, the surf stays good through Tuesday, July 21st and then drops off. From Wednesday, July 22nd, the wind turns nasty – strong, cross-shore, and messy – and the swell drops right back. The rest of the week into the end of the month is pretty poor, with small, weak, wind-affected waves. There’s a long gap of about 5 days where you’re better off doing something else.
Then, looking way out, there’s a promising pulse around Monday, July 27th. The morning brings a clean 5 ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, and by the afternoon it goes glassy with a 6 ft SSW swell. The energy is strong (1820 and 2105). Tuesday, July 28th also looks excellent. This is a long-range call, so less certain, but it’s a very promising pattern. If it holds, that’s the second standout of the period.
Overall, the best is Sunday, July 19th and then the long-range window around Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th. The rest of the time, you’ll be scratching for a decent wave.
Rusty.
