Table - best surf conditions forecast for Namotu Lefts over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Namotu Lefts. There’s a solid run of swell coming, but you’ve gotta pick your windows. The good news is there’s a real standout session that’ll have you grinning ear to ear if you time it right.
The water’s sitting at 78°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the extra rubber.
We kick off Friday, July 10th, but honestly, it’s a write-off. The morning has a 8ft SSW swell with a 12-second period, but that wind is blowing onshore from the SSW at 9 mph, and the wave energy is at 1702 (moderate strong). It’s just messy. The afternoon gets worse with a 16 mph cross-onshore. Don’t even bother.
Now, Saturday, July 11th morning is where it’s at. This is the standout. The swell drops a touch to 8ft from the SSW, but the period stretches to a very long 15 seconds – proper groundswell, and the energy jumps to 2862 (very strong). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the ESE at 6 mph, and the wave comment says clean. For a reef break like Namotu Lefts, that long period is perfect – it’ll run down the line, not just throw straight. This is the session for experienced surfers. Crowds are rare here, so you might get some waves to yourself. The afternoon swings back to a cross-onshore mess, so make the most of the morning.
Sunday, July 12th, the morning is still clean with a 6ft SSW swell (12s, 1461 energy) and a light cross-offshore. It’s good, but not as punchy as Saturday. The afternoon gets choppy again.
Monday, July 13th, the swell drops to 3ft but the period is a massive 18 seconds (978 energy). The wind is a moderate cross-offshore, and it’s clean. The waves will be small but lined up – a good option for a longboard if you’re patient.
Tuesday, July 14th is blown out with fresh cross-shore winds. Steer clear.
Wednesday, July 15th through Thursday, July 16th morning, the swell drops to 4-4ft from the SSE with a short 8-second period (363-412 energy). It’s marginal, but clean with cross-offshore winds. The short period means it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly.
Thursday, July 16th afternoon, a new pulse pushes in: 6ft from the SE at 7 seconds (877 energy). The wind swings light cross-offshore from the N at 6 mph, and conditions are clean. This is a solid pick for the second half of the week – the SE swell direction matches well with the optimum SW direction for Namotu Lefts, and the short period will keep it punchy on the reef.
Friday, July 17th morning delivers another excellent window: 3ft SSW swell with a very long 17-second period (1028 energy) and light cross-offshore winds. The afternoon is even better – glassy, with zero wind and a 3ft SSW swell (16s, 1047 energy). That’s a magic session for a longboard or a bigger board.
Saturday, July 18th morning has gentle offshore winds from the ENE and a 3ft SSW swell (16s, 1079 energy). Clean, but small. The afternoon gets smoked by a 25 mph offshore that’s too strong to paddle into.
Sunday, July 19th morning is clean and small, but the afternoon brings a 6ft SE swell (14s, 1750 energy) with light cross-shore wind. It’s marginal, but the energy is there.
From Monday, July 20th onwards, the surf fades. Swell drops consistently below 3ft through to the end of the forecast on July 25th. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy readings are all under 608 (weak to moderate). It’s a long gap of just tiny, sloppy waves. Don’t expect much after the 19th.
So, the standout is Saturday, July 11th morning – that’s the one to circle. The second best is Thursday, July 16th afternoon, with a clean pulse of SE swell. After that, Friday, July 17th offers glassy conditions but smaller waves.
Rusty.
