The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

We’ve got one solid spot on the radar for the next couple of weeks, and it’s gonna be a proper run of swell. The real standout is Namotu Lefts, a reef set-up that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the SW. Water temp is sitting at 78° and that’s bang on normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The best of the best kicks off on Sunday the 19th of July. Morning session is the go: clean, light cross-off breeze from the east at 6 mph, with a 4ft SSW groundswell running at 17 seconds. That’s a long period, meaning proper energy and good shape on the reef. Combined energy is pumping at 1081 (moderate to strong). It’s a bit overhead for the average punter, but for an intermediate surfer, this is peak. The afternoon gets messy with a cross-on wind, so aim for the early.

Monday the 20th of July is even bigger. The morning delivers 6ft of SSW swell, 20-second period—that’s very long-period groundswell. Combined energy shoots up to 2756 (strong). Wind is light and cross-off from the east at 6 mph, keeping it clean. Not for beginners, as this is well over 5ft, but for the experienced crew, this is a serious session. Crowds are rare here, so you might have it pretty quiet.

Tuesday the 21st of July morning is a glassy dream. 5ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and the wind is dead calm from the ESE at 3 mph. The reef will be handling that long period just fine, giving you proper lines. Combined energy is 1413 (strong). This is a top pick.

After that, the wind turns more cross-on through the rest of the week, and the swell drops. Wednesday the 22nd is smaller and onshore, not the one. Thursday the 23rd gets a fresh cross-breeze, so it’s lumpy. Friday the 24th morning has a clean 3ft S swell, but the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s weak—just a fun little wave but no muscle.

The second week is quieter. Saturday 25th July morning has a clean 3ft SSW swell, 14 seconds, but it’s small. Sunday 26th is similar. Monday 27th sees a bump in size to 5ft (18-second period, 1545 energy), but wind is cross-shore, so it’s a bit choppy. Tuesday 28th pushes 7ft SSW, but again cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions—best left for the experts only. Wednesday 29th afternoon finally cleans up with cross-off ESE winds at 9 mph, 6ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, and combined energy at 1010. That’s a solid afternoon session for the experienced.

Thursday 30th July morning is clean with 5ft SSW, 13-second period, cross-off breeze. Good, but not a standout.

Friday 31st July onwards the swell fades and winds turn onshore or cross. Saturday 1st August morning is glassy but tiny—2ft SSW. After that, it’s a string of poor, windy days with lumpy, choppy conditions. From Sunday 2nd August through to Monday 3rd August, the wind is strong and cross to cross-on, and the surf is messy. Not worth paddling out.

Overall, the window is clear: Sunday 19th, Monday 20th, and Tuesday 21st July mornings are the highlights. After that, it’s a waiting game until the end of the month.

Rusty.
