The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, the next two and a half weeks are a real mixed bag for Namotu Lefts. We’ve got a solid, long-period groundswell coming in from the SSW, but the winds are going to be a real pain in the arse for most of the run. The water temp is sitting right on average for this time of year at 78°, so no surprises there.
The first real window of opportunity kicks off on Friday, July 17th. The morning session is a bit of a tease – we’ve got a clean 4 ft SSW swell running at a very long 16 seconds, so the wave energy is pumping (1349). Problem is, that ESE wind is blowing cross-off at 12 mph, which messes with the takeoff zone. It’s surfable, but it’s not going to be perfect. The afternoon actually cleans up nicely with the wind dropping to 6 mph, but the swell dips slightly to 4 ft.
Saturday, July 18th is a day of two halves. The morning is small and clean at 3 ft, but the wind is still a bit of a factor. However, the Saturday afternoon is where it’s at. The wind goes totally glassy from the NNW, and you’ve got that 3 ft SSW groundswell with a 16-second period. The water is flat as a tack, and the wave energy is still solid (695). For a late arvo sesh, this is the pick of the early weekend.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is Monday, July 20th. The morning is absolute magic. We’re looking at 6 ft of clean, long-period SSW groundswell with a 20-second period, and the wind is a light ESE cross-off at just 3 mph. The wave energy is massive at 3459. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, and it’s about as good as it gets for Namotu Lefts. The crowd is listed as "rare," so you might have it all to yourself. Just be aware that with a swell this size and period, it’ll be a proper groundswell, so the sets will be powerful and the lulls between them will be long. This is a reef break, so it’ll handle the period just fine.
The quality holds into Tuesday, July 21st with a similar flavour: 5 ft of SSW groundswell in the morning, glassy conditions in the afternoon, and a very clean wave. Not quite as big as Monday, but still a fantastic session.
After that, the wind turns to crap. From Wednesday, July 22nd through the end of July, the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the swell drops off. The energy levels drop significantly, and the wave quality is poor to marginal. There’s a brief flicker of hope on Monday, July 27th with a clean 3 ft SSW swell and light cross-off wind, but the afternoon turns to junk. The same goes for Tuesday, July 28th – a clean morning but a blown-out afternoon.
The last week of July and into August is a write-off for paddle surfing. The winds are fresh and strong, mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, making the surface lumpy and choppy. The swell is small and weak. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
So, to wrap it up: your best bet is Monday, July 20th for the biggest, cleanest, and most powerful swell. The Saturday afternoon (July 18th) and Tuesday morning (July 21st) are your solid backup options for cleaner, smaller waves. The rest of the run is a struggle.
Rusty.
