The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.
The surf’s been a bit of a mess for the start of this run. We’ve got a solid pulse of energy in the water, but the wind’s been howling out of the southeast, turning everything into a lumpy, cross-shore mess. The swell energy is strong, with readings around 1779 to 1815, but it’s all for nothing when the surface is chopped up like that. You’d be fighting it more than riding it, so the call is to sit tight for these first couple of days.
Now, things start to look up on the 21st. We’ve got early morning light rain, but the wind drops right off, coming from the east at just 9 mph. That’s a cross-offshore breeze, and the wave comment is calling for *excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers*. The swell is coming from the south at 5 ft with a 13-second period, which has that long-period push to it. The energy is moderate at 1228, so it’s not a monster, but it’s super clean. This is a standout. The water's sitting at a nice 78°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no need for a thicker suit. Get out there Friday morning at Namotu Lefts.
The afternoon of the 21st jumps up in size to 8 ft from the south-southeast, but the period drops a touch to 12 seconds. The wind stays light and clean, so it’s still going to be good, but that size might be pushing it for a few. This is more of a “watch the sets, pick your moments” kind of session.
Saturday the 22nd is another bright spot. The morning has the wind going almost completely still, just a slight air from the north at 3 mph, creating a clean cross-off. The swell backs off a bit to 4 ft, but the period is still a solid 12 seconds. The energy drops to 685, but the conditions are the star here. It’s going to be glassy, rippable, and fun without being scary. A classic reef-break morning.
After that, things get a bit inconsistent. From the 23rd through the 25th, we see the swell dip, with periods dropping into the 7-9 second range. The winds stay okay, but the waves are just not there.
Keep an eye on the afternoon of the 25th. It’s looking glassy with a slight air, and a long-period groundswell from the southwest at 19 seconds pushes through. The wave height is only 3 ft, but that long period will wrap nicely. The energy is moderate at 550, but it’s a sign of things to come.
The real standout for the second week is the morning of the 26th. We’ve got clean conditions again, light cross-off wind from the east, and the swell packs a punch at 5 ft from the southwest with a 15-second period. The energy is back up over 1000, and the call is *excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers*. This is the one to plan for, though like any far-off forecast, it’s promising but we’ll keep an eye on it.
After that, it looks like the swell slowly fades out. The 27th still has some good potential with a glassy morning and a solid 15-second period, but the size drops. From the 28th onwards, it’s all downhill. The wind comes back up, the swell gets smaller and shorter period, and the conditions turn choppy again. By the end of the month and into September, it’s pretty flat and messy. We’re looking at a few days with no real surfable waves.
So here’s the takeaway: if you can, get out Friday morning, the 21st. That’s your best bet for quality with manageable size. Then, keep the morning of the 26th on your radar, but know that it’s a way off and things can change. For the most part, the first half of this run is where the action’s at.
Rusty out.
