The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up.
First up, the water is sitting at a warm 78°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest rubber.
The main game in town is Namotu Lefts – a reef setup that loves a good SW swell. Right now, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The surf is pretty marginal through the first couple of days, with a bit of a messy cross-chop spoiling things. The best early window looks like Thursday morning, 20 August, where we’ve got a clean 3ft SSW groundswell (14-second period) with a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is solid (1119), but the size is on the small side. It’s a mellow option for intermediates.
The real standout, though, is shaping up for Saturday morning, 22 August. The swell drops a touch to 4ft from the SSE, but the wind goes glassy-light and offshore, leaving the wave faces clean. The energy is moderate (644), but the conditions are about as good as it gets – clean lines and no crowds. That’s the pick of the first week.
Sunday morning, 23 August also offers a clean 5ft SSE swell (10-second period) with a nice cross-offshore breeze, though the energy is still moderate (646). It’s a solid second option.
Looking further ahead, there’s a promising but less certain window around Monday morning, 31 August. That morning we’ve got dead-calm, glassy conditions with a 6ft SE swell – a bit bigger, but the period is short (8 seconds), so it’ll be a bit weaker and more crumbly. Still, that glassy surface is a rare treat.
Then on Thursday morning, 3 September, we see a bigger pulse of SW groundswell, 4ft with a 14-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore breeze and the forecast is a bit uncertain that far out. The energy is strong (1329), so if it cleans up, it could be a great session – but it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best bet is Saturday morning the 22nd. Clean, light winds, and a friendly size for intermediates. If you’re after a bit more juice, keep an eye on that early September window.
Rusty.
