The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming up for Namotu Lefts.
The first real surf kicks off proper on Thursday the 16th of July, but it’s nothing to write home about just yet. The early part of the week is a write-off with onshore winds and messy conditions. Water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The week starts off with a bit of a dud. Tuesday the 14th has a lumpy, 3ft cross-shore wind chop with a very long 15-second period, but that doesn’t mean a thing with that SE wind howling at 22 mph. It’s a mess. Wednesday the 15th is clean but the swell is only 5ft with a short period of 8 seconds, and the wind is still too strong. The real building starts Thursday the 16th. The morning sees a moderate 6ft swell from the SE with a short period, but the combined energy is already moderate (744). The afternoon sees a classic groundswell pulse: 2ft but with a 19-second period and a combined energy of 702. That’s a lot of power for a small wave, but the wind is still side-offshore, so it’ll be clean.
Now, Friday the 17th is where it gets interesting. The morning has a clean 4ft groundswell from the SSW with a 16-second period, and combined energy is a strong 1219. This is when the swell direction finally matches the optimum SW direction, and with a light ESE breeze, the waves are gonna have some proper shape and power. That’s the standout of the week. The best of the best, though, might be that Saturday the 18th afternoon. It’s only 3ft, but it’s a glassy SSW groundswell with a 16-second period, and let me tell you, a glassy reef break with that long-period energy is a dream. The crowd situation is rare, so you might have it to yourself. That’s the pick for a real session.
The following week, Sunday the 19th through Monday the 20th, continues with clean, consistent 3ft to 4ft SSW groundswells with periods in the 16 to 20-second range. The combined energy kicks up to a very strong 1458 on Monday morning, so there’s a heap of power in the water. Winds are light and offshore, making for epic conditions. But by Tuesday the 21st, the wind ramps up to a howling 28 mph NNE, which is strong offshore but will make paddling out a nightmare. The rest of the week from the 22nd onward drops off into onshore junk, with small weak swells and poor conditions through to the 29th.
The real highlight is that Friday the 17th morning session, with the 4ft, 16-second SSW groundswell and clean conditions. For a glassy, uncrowded wave, the Saturday afternoon looks like a hidden gem. There’s a big gap from the 21st to the 29th where the surf is poor, but it eventually cleans up on the 29th with a glassy 4ft SW swell.
Rusty.
