The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are a write-off – messy cross-off winds and lumpy, weak surf. The energy is just confused and the conditions are sloppy. Don’t even bother paddling out.
Things start to turn around on Friday the 17th of July. The morning session is the real deal. A solid SSW groundswell is pushing in at 4ft, with a very long 16-second period. That’s proper energy, and the combined swell energy is a healthy 1385. The wind is a light easterly breeze, keeping it clean. This is a reef break, so that long period will really line up. It’s a standout for the experienced crew – it’s a bit much for beginners at that size, but for the rest of us, it’s going to be a cracking morning.
Saturday the 18th is a bit smaller, but the afternoon goes glassy with a 3ft SSW swell. That’s a chance for a really clean, cruisy session, though the sets will be a bit more spread out.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are building. The real magic happens on Monday the 20th. The morning sees a 4ft SSW swell with a 21-second period – that’s an absolute monster of a groundswell, very long, and the combined energy is a massive 1910. The wind is light and offshore in the afternoon. This is the best of the whole forecast. The wave quality will be world-class, but that long period and reef set-up means it’ll be a bit straight for the beach, so stick to the point. It’s a serious session for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 21st holds in with a 5ft SSW swell and strong offshore winds in the morning. Another excellent day, with the combined energy sitting at 1189. It’s a bit more manageable than Monday, but still a ripper.
Then we hit a lull. From Wednesday the 22nd through to the 26th, it’s a grim run. Strong cross-shore winds, dropping swell, and really poor, choppy conditions. The energy drops to the 200-600 range. A few days of nothing worth chasing.
We finally get a pulse back on Sunday the 26th, but the wind is messy again. The real comeback is Monday the 28th of July. Morning sees a clean 5ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and light offshore winds, combined energy hitting 1001. That’s a good, solid day.
The final standout is Wednesday the 30th of July. The morning has a 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and it’s clean. The afternoon is glassy. That’s expert territory at that size, but the power and shape will be phenomenal. It’s a fantastic way to end the outlook.
Crowds at Namotu Lefts can be an issue from time to time, so keep that in mind for the standout days.
Water temp is currently 78°F, which is perfectly normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The real standout is Monday the 20th and Wednesday the 30th. The Monday is the pick of the bunch if you can wait.
Rusty.
