Righto, grab a coffee, let’s have a yarn about what’s comin’ up at Namotu Lefts. This is a reef set-up that loves a good SW groundswell, and we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag ahead, but there are some absolute magic windows if you time it right. Water temp is sittin’ about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first solid run kicks off Sunday morning, July 5. We’re lookin’ at a clean 4ft swell from the SSE with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is sittin’ at a moderate 453 – nothing world-beating, but that cross-off breeze will have it lookin’ real tidy. It’s a gentle southeasterly, so the face should hold up nicely. The afternoon drops back a touch to 3ft, but still clean with that same cross-off.
Monday the 6th turns pretty average. Morning is a meagre 2ft with a light cross-off, but it’s just too small to get excited about. By Monday afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the SW with only a slight air, but the quality is poor.
Now Tuesday the 7th is where it gets interesting. The morning has a tiny 2ft from the SW, but with a 15-second period and a proper offshore from the NE – that’s clean as a whistle. The energy is a moderate 210. It’s small but it’ll be lined up and pretty if you’ve got a longboard. The afternoon bumps to 2ft with a 16-second period and a NNW cross-off, still clean. This is the pick of that first week if you’re after something glassy and fun.
Heads up for Wednesday the 8th. The morning sees an 8ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, and combined energy is a massive 4418 – that’s proper strong. But the wind is cross-onshore from the S, so it’s gonna be a bumpy beast. By afternoon it’s 10ft and 25 mph winds, choppy and messy. That one’s for the tow-in crew or the kamikazes. Thursday and Friday the 9th and 10th keep the size up around 7ft to 10ft, but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not gonna be pristine. This stretch is more for the big-wave chargers who don’t mind a bit of chop.
But hold on – Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th are the real standouts of this outlook. Both mornings have a clean 6ft swell from the SSW with a 12-second period, and combined energy is strong at around 1576-1777. The wind is a light cross-off from the ESE, so it’s gonna be glassy and lined up. The guidance says excellent conditions for experienced surfers – that’s the weekend to block out. Crowds can be a factor here, so get in early.
The following week gets trickier. Monday the 13th morning has a clean 3ft with a 15-second period and cross-off wind, but it’s small. Tuesday and Wednesday are marginal with building wind. Thursday the 16th afternoon is a beauty – glassy conditions with a 5ft SSW swell and a 20-second period, combined energy at 1959. That’s a real sleeper session. Friday the 17th morning is also a standout: 7ft from the SSW with an 18-second period, clean with a light cross-off and energy at 4187. That’s expert-to-advanced territory. The weekend of the 19th and 20th sees three-metre swells again, but the wind is cranking from the SE, so expect bumpy, lumpy conditions. It’ll have power, but it won’t be pretty.
Overall, the best on offer? That Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th double-header. Clean, strong, and the swell direction matches up nicely with the optimum SW. If you can roll the dice on Thursday 16th afternoon for a glassy session with those long-period lines, that’s a true gem.
