The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Namotu Lefts. This is a reef setup that can really fire, but it’s not going to be a non-stop party. There’s a bit of a slow start, then some real promise, and then we’ll have to see how the second week shakes out. We’re looking at some classic southwest groundswell, but the local winds are going to be the deciding factor on whether it’s a day for charging or a day for staying on the beach.
First up, Thursday the 20th of August is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a modest 3.6ft of SSW swell, but a fresh 19 kn SE cross-shore wind is going to chop it right up. It’s not worth your time unless you just want to get wet and frustrated. The combined energy is sitting at a moderate 984, but the onshore chop will ruin it.
Friday the 21st is where things start to get interesting. Overnight, the swell kicks in with a proper 8.2ft from the SSE, packing a strong 3014 energy reading. The wind settles to a cross-off ESE at 15 kn in the morning, which should keep the face relatively clean. It’s going to be a solid, powerful wave, and the period is a nice 12 seconds, so there’s some real push behind it. It might be a bit much for beginners, but for the intermediate and up crew, this is the first standout of the window. The afternoon backs off a touch to 5.2ft with the wind dropping to 12 kn, still clean, still good. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
Saturday the 22nd is a mellow day. The swell eases to 3.9ft in the morning with a light 6 kn ESE cross-off breeze, so the conditions will be glassy. It’s clean, but not particularly powerful. The afternoon drops further to 3.3ft and a light S cross-on wind puts a few ripples on it. Not the day for a hero session, but a nice paddle if you’re keen.
Sunday the 23rd sees the swell bump back up to 5.2ft from the SE, but there are two different stories here. The morning has a 15 kn cross-off wind that keeps it clean, though the period has dropped to 10 seconds, making it a bit more disorganized. The afternoon, however, conditions degrade with a light cross-shore and the period dropping to a short 8 seconds. This is weak, short-period swell, and it won’t have much shape. The energy has also dropped to a weak-ish 305 reading. Not great.
Monday the 24th is more of the same. The morning has a 5.2ft SE swell with a cross-off breeze, but the period is still a short 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about. Then the afternoon glass-off arrives with a tiny 3.3ft and a 7-second period. The energy is weak at 171. This is flat, mushy, and ordinary. Just a ripple, really.
The middle of the week from Tuesday the 25th through Wednesday the 26th sees a total reset. We get a drop in size and a jump in period from a SW direction, but the winds are all over the place. Tuesday is a complete dud with 1.3ft to 2ft of swell at a long 18-19 seconds, but it’s crossed up with a fresh wind. The energy is very weak, below 300. Wednesday brings a little more size at 5.6ft, but it’s accompanied by fresh 18-22 kn cross-shore winds that will turn the ocean into a washing machine. The energy is strong (1643), but it won't be rideable. It’ll be a mess.
Now, here’s the real stand-out period. From Thursday the 27th through Friday the 28th, the stars align. The swell is consistent, around 4.6ft to 4.9ft, from the SSW with a long 15-second period. More importantly, the winds are light and cross-off, turning to glass on the Friday afternoon. Thursday morning has a moderate breeze, but it’s cross-off and clean. The energy is a solid 1238, and the conditions are described as “very good.” Thursday afternoon is where it gets special. The wind drops to a light 6 kn, the swell is 4.6ft, and the period is 15 seconds.
