The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s been a tough stretch for us here at Nahr Brahim.
Lookin’ at the full 16-day window, from Thursday the 20th of August right through to Friday the 4th of September, there’s just no real surf to get excited about. The river mouth is barely winking at us. Everything comin’ through is small, weak, and messy. This spot only breaks rarely anyway, so a run like this is a bit more normal for the area, but it still stings.
We start off Thursday the 20th with a tiny 1.0ft swell from the WNW, period a short 4 seconds, and a cross-on breeze out of the NNW at 9 mph. Combined wave energy is a measly 6 (weak). The water’s 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Poor conditions, flat out. Friday and Saturday of the 21st and 22nd don’t get any better—still tiny, still cross-on, zero score.
There’s a tiny bump tryin’ to happen Saturday afternoon the 22nd and into Sunday the 23rd, with onshore wind and swell bumpin’ up to 2ft from the west, but the period is a weak 5 seconds. The energy climbs just a bit to 13, then 15 (still weak), but it’s onshore and sloppy.
The best of a bad bunch is shaping up around Saturday the 29th of August, with that same 2ft west swell, but the period stretches to 8 seconds – a little longer – and the energy hits a moderate value of 31. Wind goes light and onshore, so it’ll be fat and soft, but it’s the most surfable look in the whole run. Sunday the 30th morning goes glassy with a slight air from the NW, but the swell backs off to 1.0ft with an energy of 11. Not worth paddlin’ out for.
There are a couple of glassy mornings early on Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September, but the swell is just a ghost at 0.6ft. By Wednesday the 2nd of September, there’s a 1ft west swell with a period of 7 seconds and moderate energy of 15, glassy in the morning—temptin’, but still barely a ripple.
The very last day, Friday the 4th of September, shows a 1ft WNW swell with an 8-second period and energy climbin’ to 24 (moderate), but a moderate cross-onshore breeze out of the southwest at 12 mph is gonna chop it all up.
So here’s the bottom line: if you absolutely have to get wet, Saturday the 29th of August is the closest thing to a window we’ve got—small but cleanest. Otherwise, this stretch is a write-off. Conditions are poor on every single report, and with a break that rarely works, it’s nothin’ unusual for this region.
Stay hopeful, forecasts can always shift.
Rusty.
