The Lowdown
Gather ‘round, crew. Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next sixteen days for Myponga Beach are going to be a real test of patience for anyone wanting to get wet. The long-range picture is pretty bleak, with only one spike of solid, heavy swell turning up late in the game, but it comes with a big mess of wind that’ll wreck any chance of clean waves. There’s a long quiet stretch in the middle you’ll want to know about, too.
Right from the start on Monday the 17th, it’s a sad scene with barely a ripple (0.3 ft from the SW) and a gusty cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is just a whisper (7). That sets the tone for the first week. Tuesday the 18th has a tiny bump of 1 ft, but it’s wind-affected and messy. Wednesday the 19th sees the first real attempt at a pulse with 4 ft from the WNW, but the onshore wind is fresh at 19 mph, turning it into a lumpy, poor-quality mess. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are back to flat, glassy, and tiny – the kind of days you spend waxing your board and staring at the horizon.
Then the real dry spell hits. From Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s a long stretch of nothing but knee-high dribble or wind slop. There are some glassy moments on the 23rd (Sunday afternoon) and the 24th (Monday), but with 0.7 ft at best, it’s not worth the wetsuit peel. The 30th of August (Sunday) is glassy with a 0.7 ft SW swell, but the energy is so weak (9) you’d be floating. This gap in decent surf is about ten days long.
The one real standout – and I mean the only one – comes on Thursday the 27th of August. The swell jumps hard to 8 ft from the WSW, with a combined energy of (637). That’s proper power, big and strong. The period is 7 seconds though, short-period wind swell, so it’ll be fat and crumbly. But here’s the bummer: the wind is onshore at 16 mph from the west. That turns a big day into a messy, blown-out wall for experts only. This is not a beginner’s wave – at over 8 ft it’s too big and powerful for anyone without serious experience. The beach-and-reef setup here is sheltered, but with that onshore wind and size, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell eases a bit on Friday morning the 28th but the cross-shore wind is still fresh, cleaning it up a tad but leaving it lumpy.
The water temp is sitting at 58°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing too wild on that front.
So, if you’re holding out hope, that Thursday the 27th is your only real chance for a wave, but don’t expect it to be pretty. The rest of the run is a write-off. It’s not often it stays this poor for this long, but it happens. Forecasts can change. Keep your eyes peeled.
Rusty.
