The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – the next two weeks are a proper write-off for Milford Beach. There’s a long stretch of quiet ahead, with the first ten days offering nothing but poor surf conditions. The water temp is sitting average for this time of year, which is about the only thing going for it.

From Friday 7 August through to Monday 11 August, it’s a flat, frustrating mess. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a big fat zero (0) for the first few days. Even when a tiny 0.3ft pulse shows up on Saturday 8 August afternoon it’s from the north with a 15-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and ugly. Sunday 9 August brings a bit of 3.3ft swell from the north with a short 6-second period, but the wind is howling 15 mph cross-shore, so it’s just a chop-fest. The energy climbs to 74, but it’s still poor. Monday 10 August has glassy mornings with 1.6ft, but it’s too weak to ride.

The second week doesn’t get any better. From 12 August to 22 August, the swell stays tiny – mostly 0.3ft to 2.0ft – with the odd period pushing 10 seconds, but it’s never enough. The combined energy barely cracks 44 on 12 August, and then it’s mostly single-digit figures. Winds are often cross-shore or onshore, with a few glassy moments on 16 August morning and 19 August morning, but the swell is just 0.7ft or 0.3ft. There is no stand-out day, no hidden gem. The beach is a beginner-friendly spot, but even a beginner couldn’t catch a thing here. It’s a dead run.

For the whole 16-day window, I can’t point you to a single session worth paddling out for. It’s a typical quiet spell for this area. Don’t stress – forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
