The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest with you right off the bat: the next 16 days at Melnrage are a total write-off. I’m looking at the board and there’s just nothing to get excited about. The forecast is a long, flat stretch of poor surf conditions, with only a couple of fleeting moments that might get your heart rate up, but they’re not worth paddling out for.

The trouble starts now and runs deep. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing happening. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave energy is in the gutter. The first real bump in the road comes on Friday the 7th of August, with a 6ft swell from the W, but it’s a total mess. The wind is howling at 25 mph, cross-onshore, and the combined energy hits 319 (moderate), but it’s just a stormy, blown-out wall of water. This is not a surf day; it’s a kite-surf day if anything. The swell drops a bit on Saturday the 8th (4ft to 5ft, W), but the wind is still howling onshore at 19 mph, so forget clean waves.

We get a slight reprieve on Tuesday the 11th of August. The afternoon shows a tiny 4ft NW swell with a period of only 4 seconds (short, weak windswell), but the wind goes light and offshore from the ESE at 6 mph. The combined energy is a pathetic 44 (weak). It’ll be clean as a whistle, but you’ll be scratching for knee-high lumps. A beginner might get a few wobbles, but it’s inconsistent and just not worth the effort.

Honestly, the rest of the run is a desert. There are multiple days with zero swell or barely a ripple. We see a glassy afternoon on Thursday the 13th of August, but with no swell at all. The next real pulse shows up on Sunday the 16th of August, with a 5ft W swell at 6 seconds (average period), but the wind is onshore at 12 mph. The energy is 182 (moderate), but the onshore wind will shred it. It’s a frustrating pattern. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing special.

So, what’s the call? There are no standouts. The best you could say is Tuesday the 11th of August afternoon, when the wind goes offshore, but it’s just a tiny, weak wave. For a spot that’s inconsistent and exposed to NW swell, we’re just not getting the right push. It’s a blank run, plain and simple. Keep the board waxed and wait for the next storm track to line up. Forecasts change, and it won’t be this poor forever.

Rusty.
