The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks around Long Strand-Castlefreke are looking pretty flat and disappointing. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with no standout days to get excited about.

The water is sitting at 64°F which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the paddle won't be a shock to the system.

Right now, through the rest of July and into the first week of August, the swell is just not showing up. We’re looking at heights of 0.3ft to 1.0ft for the most part, with combined swell energy barely cracking 50 (that’s weak). The wind does offer some clean windows – Thursday morning the 16th has a gentle offshore breeze from the NE, and there are a few glassy mornings on the 24th, 25th, and 27th – but with no push behind it, you’ll be bobbing around on a lake. The 26th of July Sunday morning sees a tiny bump to 2ft from the W with 101 energy, but it’s still poor surf and the wind swings onshore by the afternoon.

The tail end of the outlook on the 28th, 29th, and 30th shows a bit more size – 2ft to 3ft – but the period drops right down to 5-6 seconds, meaning short, weak, crumbly waves. The winds are mostly onshore or strong cross-onshore, making it a messy, choppy affair. The 31st of July Friday morning has a clean offshore from the ENE, but only 1ft of weak 6-second swell. It’s a sad state of affairs.

Frankly, for the entire 16-day window, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The consistent theme is “poor surf conditions” across every single time slot. The setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the strong onshore winds later in the period. Grab a coffee and wait for a better forecast.

Rusty.
