Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for Long Strand-Castlefreke and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s going to be a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window looks pretty flat and uninspiring, so I’m not going to sugarcoat it.
The first real chance to even think about getting wet is on Friday afternoon, July 3rd. We’re looking at a tiny 1.0ft swell from the WSW with a period of 10 seconds. It’s weak, with combined wave energy of only 30. The wind is a cross-on at 16 mph, which will chop it up. Honestly, it’s poor surf conditions. You’re not missing much.
This flat spell just drags on and on. Saturday the 4th is a little bigger in the morning at 1ft, but the period drops to 3 seconds in the afternoon – that’s just wind slop. The whole week is a write-off: tiny 0.3ft and 0.7ft waves with mostly cross-on winds, though there are a few glassy moments on the mornings of Tuesday the 7th and Friday the 10th. Even then, the swell is barely a ripple. The water temp is about normal for the time of year at 61°F.
The second week inches up slightly, but it’s still nothing to write home about. By Monday the 13th we see a 1.0ft SSW swell with a 19-second period. That’s a very long period groundswell, and combined energy hits 96 – the highest in the whole window. But that’s not saying much. The wind is light cross-shore in the morning, so it might be clean. Remember, long-period swells like this can be tricky at a beach break, and with only 1.0ft, it’s going to be tiny and inconsistent. The 14th of July sees similar energy (90-91) but with onshore winds.
There’s nothing here that stands out as a good session. The biggest swell is 2ft, and even that has a 3-second period. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry – it’s never too big. For the rest of us, this is a kite-surfing kind of setup if the wind is up, but for paddle surfing, it’s a full-on blank run. The spot is fairly consistent, but it tends not to stay this poor for long, so keep an eye on it – forecasts can change. For now, though, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
