The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: if you were hoping for a cracking run of surf at Long Strand-Castlefreke over the next couple of weeks, you’re going to be disappointed. The whole 16-day window is a flat, poor-quality mess. Honestly, there’s not a single session I’d recommend paddling out for. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year — that’s a solid 4° above the norm, so something’s off in the ocean this season.
From Wednesday 19 August right through to Thursday 03 September, it’s one long dry spell. The swell barely ticks over — most days you’re looking at 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with a few pulses around 3 ft to 5 ft on Tuesday 25 August and Friday 28 August, but those are windswell blink‑and‑you’ll‑miss‑it bumps. Periods are mostly short — 5 to 8 seconds — meaning weak, crumbly energy. The combined wave energy stays low, usually in the 20s to 80s (weak), except for Friday 28 August afternoon when it briefly jumps to 379 (moderate), but even then the surf is still rated poor.
The wind’s often cross‑onshore or fresh, and when it does go offshore or glassy — like Saturday 22 August afternoon with glassy conditions and a slight breeze — the swell’s barely a ripple. Long period swells (14–16 seconds) pop up on a few mornings, but the height is tiny, so it’s not doing anything. The direction is mostly SSW, which is fine for the break’s optimum SW swell, but there’s just no size.
Forget about beginners or experts — there’s nothing worth paddling for anyone. If you’ve got a kite and you’re itching to get out, the breezy, lumpy afternoons might interest you, but for a surfboard it’s a total write‑off. When a stretch like this hits an exposed beach‑and‑reef setup, it’s just the way it goes — forecasts can change, but right now it’s a flat blank run.
Rusty.
