The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – this stretch of coast is looking pretty flat. For the next 16 days, starting from the 15th of July, there’s just nothing on offer that’s worth paddling out for. Every single day through to the 30th of July is coming up as poor surf conditions, so we’re looking at a blank run that’s going to feel like an eternity.
Let’s talk about what’s going on at Long Strand-Castlefreke. This is an exposed spot that picks up swell from the SW, and the optimum swell direction is from the SW. The problem is, the swell heights are tiny. On Wednesday morning the 15th, we’ve got a 1 ft swell from the SSW with a period of 16 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell, but it’s just not got any power. The combined energy is a weak 65. The wind is a fresh 19 mph from the ENE, which is offshore, so it’s clean, but there’s no wave to ride. The water temperature is 64°, and the anomaly is 3° warmer than normal, so it’s a touch warmer than you’d expect for this time of year.
The whole 16-day window is like this. Swell heights barely scrape 2 ft on the 24th of July, with a weak 6-second period and a combined energy of 36. That’s a short period, windswell, and it’s just not doing anything. Most days, the swell is 0.3 ft to 1 ft, and the combined energy stays in the low double digits or even single digits – like 5 on the 26th and 27th of July. Even on the 29th, when the swell bumps up to 2 ft from the WSW, the period drops to 3 seconds, and the energy is only 12. That’s messy, short-period junk with a cross-onshore wind.
For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a real dry spell. There’s no standout day, no standout set. The best you can say is that on the morning of the 26th and 27th of July, the wind goes glassy, with a light 3 mph from the NW and N, respectively, but with a 0.3 ft swell, it’s just a flat, glassy lake. Not a single wave to ride.
Look, if you’re a kite surfer, some of these afternoons with a moderate breeze and cross-onshore wind might be interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a write-off. This is one of those stretches where the coast just goes quiet. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d say leave the boards at home.
