The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Long Strand-Castlefreke.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. We're looking at a solid two-week run where the surf is just... flat. Tiny. The kind of small that makes you wonder if the ocean's holding its breath. From now, right through to the end of July, the swell heights barely tickle 2 ft, and most days we’re talking 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft. The combined wave energy is weak, mostly in the teens and single digits (9-55 range), so there’s just no power in the water. For an exposed SW-facing spot like this, that’s a real bummer.
Tuesday the 14th starts things off with a 1 ft SSW groundswell at a super long 18 seconds, but with a fresh 30 km/h cross-off wind from the ENE, it’s clean but gutless. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nice for a paddle, but you won’t be catching much.
The rest of the first week is more of the same: tiny 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft SSW swells, periods dropping from 18 seconds down to 12. Thursday the 16th morning has a gentle offshore breeze from the NE, so it’ll be glassy clean, but that 1.0 ft swell isn't going to do anything. Friday the 17th afternoon turns a little cross-on and lumpy.
The second week is no better. Monday the 20th afternoon gives us a moment of pure glass – zero wind – but with a 0.7 ft SSW swell, it’s just a mirror with no bumps. Tuesday the 21st morning has a short-period 2 ft SE swell (6 seconds) with a moderate offshore, but that’s not enough to get excited about. Late in the month, around the 28th and 29th, we see a tiny uptick to 2 ft and 3 ft, but the winds are onshore or cross-onshore and the period is short (7-8 seconds). That’s choppy, lumpy, and messy.
Honestly, there isn’t a single standout session in this whole 16-day outlook. The best you can hope for is a clean, glassy paddle on the 20th afternoon, but don’t expect a wave. This is a classic summer flat spell for an exposed beach. The consistency is there in terms of conditions being clean, but the swell just isn’t. For any real wave riding, you’d be better off waiting for the forecasts to change – and here, they often do.
Rusty.
