Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this outlook for Long Strand-Castlefreke is a tough one. We’ve got a full 16 days ahead, and honestly, there isn’t a single session that I’d call a good surf option. The whole period is a write-off for decent waves, so we’re looking at a long, quiet run on the beach.
Starting from Monday the 6th of July, it’s tiny and messy – we’re talking a pathetic 0.7 ft swell from the SSW, mixed with onshore winds and combined wave energy of just 24 (weak). That’s not surf, that’s just a ripple. Tuesday the 7th starts with glassy conditions but a 0.3 ft swell (combined energy 8) – flat as a pancake. Wednesday and Thursday stay in that same rut: tiny, weak, and offering nothing. The water temp is around 59.4°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least the water’s not cold, but it won’t matter ’cause there’s no waves to enjoy.
By the weekend of the 10th and 11th of July, we start seeing some cleaner conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the swell heights are still stuck at 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft. The combined energy is still in the weak range (7 to 13). It’s a beautiful day for a swim, not a surf.
From Monday the 13th of July onwards, there’s a bit of a bump in the numbers – the swell height creeps up to 1.0 ft, with a long-period SSW groundswell (19 seconds). The combined energy hits 99 (still weak) on Monday morning, and we get fresh offshore winds from the ENE. It looks clean and inviting, but the reality is 1.0 ft is barely even a knee-high day. It won’t break with any power. This pattern of 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft, clean and offshore, but totally undersized, continues right through to the end of the outlook on Tuesday the 21st of July. Late in the piece, for example on the 17th and 18th, the wind is cross-offshore and clean, but you’re still looking at 0.7 ft swell.
Because the swell never gets above 1.0 ft and the quality is so poor, there’s no standout session here, no moment to get excited about. The break is fairly consistent and it’s an exposed beach setup, so when the swell is this flat, it’s more of a normal thing for this area in a quiet period. With the consistent offshore winds and tiny waves, honestly, this setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There’s just nothing happening, folks. Keep the boards in the garage for now. The forecasts can always change, but right now it’s a full 16-day blank.
