The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you right off the bat – this 16-day stretch for Long Strand-Castlefreke is a tough one. We’ve got a long, empty run to start, with not a single decent wave on offer until we’re well into the second week. The water is sitting at 66°F and that’s 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so a notable warm patch, but it won’t save the surf.
The first real glimmer of something rideable doesn’t show up until Thursday the 29th of August. Even then, it’s a messy story. That morning we’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds, but the wind is howling cross-onshore from the west at 19 mph, making it lumpy. The combined swell energy is moderate at 276, but the quality is poor. The afternoon is similar: 4ft, WSW, 10-second period, cross-onshore west wind at 22 mph, with energy up to 313. It’s strong, but unsurfable unless you’re a masochist or a kite surfer. Honestly, with that much wind and a beach setup, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We roll into Monday the 2nd of September with a brief reprieve. Wednesday morning the 4th of September is the only true standout in this whole grim period. On that morning, we get a 3ft swell from the SSW with a 7-second period, but the wind finally swings offshore from the NE at 16 mph, giving us clean, moderate offshore conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 181, but that clean face makes it the best wave of the window. It’s small, but it’s clean and rideable for the advanced crew. The afternoon that same day sees a drop to 2ft from the SW with a 10-second period, cross-off wind from the east at 16 mph, and energy at 139 – still clean, but fading.
After that, it dribbles away. Thursday the 5th kicks in with more onshore junk. Honestly, for the rest of the outlook, it’s a long gap of poor surf conditions with nothing to recommend. We’ve got a few pulses of moderate energy but always ruined by wind. So, one small window on the 4th of September is your only real bet. It’s a thin run, but that’s the coast sometimes – it won’t stay poor forever, but this forecast is a bust for now.
Rusty.
