The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, because I’ve got the full 16-day picture for Long Strand-Castlefreke, and honestly, it’s a tough one to call. We’re staring down a long, flat stretch here, and it doesn’t let up.
Right now and through the coming days into next week, there’s barely a ripple. The combined swell energy is tiny – we’re talking numbers like 10 (weak energy) or even lower. Swell heights are a pathetic 0.3ft to 0.7ft for the most part. It’s a real desert. You’ll see some light offshore winds on Sunday morning (July 19th – that’s tomorrow) and Monday morning, but with that kind of swell, it’s just not surfable. This is going to be a gap of many days with absolutely nothing to recommend.
The one date that catches the eye way out is Monday, July 28th. On the Tuesday morning after that, we get a blip. It’s not much more than a ripple, but the swell jumps to 2ft from the west, with a super short period of just 3 seconds – so no real power. The problem is, it’s accompanied by a fresh onshore wind (19 mph) on the afternoon before. That combo is more likely to whip up a choppy mess than anything you’d want to paddle into. Honestly, that setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
To be brutally honest, there are no true standouts on offer. The entire 16-day window is a write-off. The water temp is 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year (a jump of 4°F above the average), but that’s the only thing that’s firing. Break is at Long Strand-Castlefreke, an exposed beach break that needs a decent SW swell to work, and we just aren’t getting one. For the rare break that does have a consistent reputation, these blank runs are a bit more normal for this area. When the wind finally swings around to light offshore (like it does on the very last day, August 3rd morning), there’s still no swell to push it.
So, save the gas. It’s a waiting game, mate. These forecasts can change, but right now, the only thing breaking is your heart.
