Table - best surf conditions forecast for Long Strand-Castlefreke over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've stared at the charts for the next 16 days and I gotta be straight with you – it's a flat spell. There's just nothing doing. The whole run from now through to the end of July is a write-off for any kind of decent wave. You're looking at a solid two-week stretch of no real surf on offer.
The only break on the radar is Long Strand-Castlefreke, and it’s a tough one. The water is sitting at 62°F, which is pretty much normal for the time of year, so no drama there. But the swell is tiny. We're talking 1ft most days, with a combined energy that barely hits triple digits – the best it gets is a measly 114 (moderate wave energy) on Tuesday morning. The period is all over the place, sometimes hitting 18 or 19 seconds, which is proper groundswell, but with that sort of height it's just not gonna break. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, which would normally be a dream, but there's nothing for it to work with. The ENE winds on Monday morning are a solid 25 mph, making it clean but impossible to paddle into. It's a heartbreaking situation because the conditions would be clean, but the ocean is just giving us nothing.
Even the later days, like around the 24th of July, there's a tiny blip of 2ft swell from the SW, but the period is a pathetic 6 seconds and the wind is onshore. It's a total no-go. For an exposed spot that needs a good SW swell, this is just a barren run. You'd be better off taking the board in for a repair. The only thing that might get your attention is the strong cross-offshore winds later in the month, which would make this setup more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, but for us wave hunters, it's a drought.
Keep an eye on the charts, though. It tends not to stay this flat forever, and forecasts can change. But for now, don't bother waxing up.
