Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening on your local stretch.
Straight off the bat, I’m going to level with you: it’s a tough run for the next couple of weeks at Long Strand-Castlefreke. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. Expect a gap of about 12 days with nothing worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting around 61°F with the anomaly just 1°F above normal, so pretty average for this time of year.
From Thursday 2nd July through to Monday 13th July, it’s all tiny, weak, and blown-out. Swell heights barely break 1 ft and the periods are short. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, with the combined energy figures stuck in the 20s, 30s, and 40s – that’s weak energy (39) for the first afternoon, just no push. Conditions are consistently labelled as poor surf. It’s a write-off.
The real standout is a very brief window that appears on Tuesday 14th July. We finally get a pulse of energy. The morning sees a 1 ft SSW swell with a period of 18 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell, which means it’ll have some shape but will run straight at a beach break. The wind is glassy offshore from the ENE at 3 mph. The combined energy jumps to 155, which is a moderate energy reading (155). The guidance flag there says the waves are surfable, but the conditions are still just very ordinary. Still, that’s the best we get for the whole outlook – a clean, small, long-period swell with offshore wind. Even with the period being so long, for a brekky session it might just offer a few clean lines if you’re keen and patient. It’s a small window that’s more of a promise than a guarantee.
After that, it’s back to tiny surf and poor conditions right through to Friday 17th July. Nothing else comes close to being any good.
Honestly, for a setup like this that is fairly consistent on a good run, it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change. But right now, it’s a long wait for a very modest highlight.
Rusty.
