The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here checking in. Let’s be real about this stretch. It’s not looking good for a paddle.
We’re focused on Long Strand-Castlefreke, and the water temp is a touch over 64°F, which feels a bit warmer than usual for the season. That’s nice for a swim, but it doesn’t matter much when there’s no swell.
From this Friday, July 17th, all the way through the end of July, it’s flat. Non-existent. The swell height barely reaches 1 foot. The wave energy is pathetic – numbers like 37 and lower. Sure, the wind is clean a lot of the time, with offshore breezes from the north in the mornings, but you can’t surf nothing. You’re looking at a dead stretch of over a week with zero chance of a decent ride.
Then you get to Saturday, August 1st. There’s a tiny pulse in the morning: about 2 feet from the southeast, with the energy climbing to 49. By the afternoon you see around 3 feet from the south-southeast. But the period is a short, dumpy 5 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and messy. The morning wind is a light offshore from the north-northwest, so it’ll be clean, but with that little energy, it’s still poor surf. For a spot like this, which is advanced and can get crowded, there just isn't enough to work with.
To sum it up: you’ve got a long, flat spell. The only tiny hope is that small bump on August 1st, but it’s not worth getting excited about. The setup later on with the strong cross-onshore winds might be better for the kite surfers than anyone on a paddle board.
Just a waiting game now.
Rusty.
