The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for Long Strand-Castlefreke over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I’m looking at this forecast and it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for decent waves. We’ve got a long, flat spell with tiny swell and messy winds. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Monday, August 24th, when the swell starts to build, but the wind is junk – cross-onshore and choppy. The water right now is a notable 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re staring at flat water.

The only window that even looks like it could produce a wave is around Monday afternoon, August 24th, and into Tuesday, August 25th. The swell jumps up to 6 ft from the SSW, but the period is a short, weak 7 seconds, so it’s not going to have much push. The combined energy is moderate at 344, but it’s all messy. The wind is cross-shore and strong, and with it being a beach break, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess.

After that, it drops back down to tiny, inconsistent surf with a long period SSW groundswell, but by then the wind turns offshore or cross-off, which would be clean. However, the swell is just too small – 1.0 ft to 2 ft – to bother with. The long period means the sets will be far apart.

So, the bottom line? There are no standouts here. The one bump of size on the 24th and 25th is ruined by strong, onshore wind. The rest of the 16-day window is flat or tiny. That’s just the way it goes sometimes around here. Forecasts can change, but for now, I’d give the board a rest.

Rusty.
