The Lowdown

Alright, hold on to your leashes, it’s Rusty. I’ve been chewing through the forecast for the next couple of weeks for Le Porge (Gironde), and I’ve got to tell you, the ocean is playing hard to get for most of it. But don’t go waxing down just yet, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon.

For the next week and a half, it’s a whole lot of knee-high slop with winds that just won’t do us any favors. Mostly onshore or cross-onshore, chopping up whatever tiny lines we have. The water is a warm 78°, which is a good bit warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s actually nice just to be in it. But the surf? Forget it. From the 20th of August, we see a slight bump to about 4ft from the WNW, with the energy picking up to a moderate 305. It’s a better period at 11 seconds, but it’s still forecast as poor. Not quite worth the paddle.

There’s a small window on the morning of the 22nd, Saturday, where the wind drops to glassy and there’s a small 3ft swell. That could be a fun one for the groms to get a few clean, soft ones. But the energy is weak and the direction isn’t perfect, so don’t expect much.

After that, we hit a big flat patch. From the 23rd through the end of the month, it’s a wasteland. A couple of days have a little cross-offshore breeze to keep the surface clean, but there’s just no swell to push it. It’s a solid 7-day blank run for any real surf.

But listen up, because the start of September is where it gets interesting. On the afternoon of Tuesday the 1st, the models are showing a proper pulse of energy. We’re looking at 5ft of WNW groundswell with a strong 575 combined energy and a solid 11-second period. The wind is light out of the southwest, which is a bit cross-on, but it’s light enough to keep things reasonably clean. That’s our standout. The next morning on the 2nd holds that energy at 496 with similar size and period and a light cross-shore wind. It’s a touch less energy, but still the best we’ve seen by a long shot.

Just a word of caution: that long-period swell on a beach break can sometimes close out and get a bit walled. It’s better if we get some banks from the storms that are forecast, but right now, it’s pointing to the best few days of the whole window. It’s still over a week away, so we’ve got time for things to shift. For the beginners, 5ft is definitely too big, stay on the sand. For everyone else, this is the one to keep an eye on.

So there you have it. A whole lot of flat and funky, followed by a promising punch at the start of next week. Stay stoked.

That’s all from me. Rusty.
