The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Le Porge over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first ten days or so are a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of hardly any decent surf on the cards from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to the end of the month. The waves are tiny, often under 2 ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, chewing things up. There’s hardly any energy in the water at all – the combined energy readings are all in the teens and twenties, which is weak. It’s a real flat spell, not much to get excited about for a paddle surfer.
The swell starts to lift a little on Thursday the 27th, with a 2 ft WNW swell in the morning, but it’s short period at 5 seconds. It’s clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s still just ordinary. The real kicker comes later that day when the wind swings onshore and the swell jumps to 5 ft, but it’s a choppy mess. Stay out of the water.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th see proper size arrive – 6 ft to 10 ft – but with strong onshore winds howling at 25 mph, it’s just a washing machine. The combined energy is up around 653 to 1682, which is strong to very strong, but it’s completely unsurfable. Honestly, if you’ve got a kite, that might be more interesting than a surfboard.
Things get a little bit more interesting on Sunday the 30th. There’s a 6 ft W swell, period 8 seconds, and the wind is light cross-onshore in the morning. The combined energy is at 650, so there’s moderate power, but it’s still a marginal call. The afternoon goes back to being choppy with the wind picking up.
There’s a little window on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning is dead flat calm, glassy, with a 3 ft WNW swell. It’s small, but it’s clean. The energy is still low at 89, but that glassy wind is a treat. It’s a surfable wave, but very ordinary.
The real standout, the one worth circling in the diary, is Monday the 7th of September. We’ve got a 3 ft WNW swell, with a long period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is light and offshore from the ESE, making it clean. The combined energy is up at 301, which is moderate, and it’s expected to be good conditions. It’s still a week and a half away, so keep your fingers crossed, but this is the best bet in the whole outlook. With that long period, a beach break like Le Porge might see it breaking a bit straight, but with that offshore wind, it could still be a fun one.
So, to sum it up: a lot of flat and messy days, with a little late hope on the 7th of September. Keep an eye on that one.
