The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. We’re looking at the stretch ahead for Le Porge, and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a tough one. The forecast is basically a long run of poor conditions, with a few very brief moments that might just about be worth a paddle if you’re desperate.
The water is a whopping 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is really unusual for the Atlantic coast. The main issue is the wind. For days on end, we’ve got a moderate to fresh breeze blowing from the west and north-west, which is straight onshore or cross-onshore for this exposed west-facing beach. That means chop, bump, and generally frustrating surf. The swell energy is weak for the vast majority of the period, with readings mostly below 100 (between 7 and 92), so there’s just no power in the water.
We start off on Friday the 17th with a tiny 2ft to 2ft west-northwest windswell, but with a 12 mph onshore wind, it’s a complete write-off. The weekend is even worse – Saturday the 18th drops to 0.7ft, and Sunday the 19th has a cleaner look in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is only 2ft with a short period of 5 seconds; it’s flat and weak. Not worth the wet suit.
The next week is more of the same. Mornings often look cleaner with a light cross-offshore wind from the north-east, but the swell is always small, around 2ft to 3ft, and short period. The afternoons get chopped up by a fresh north-northwest wind.
There’s a tiny standout on the morning of Friday the 24th. It’s glassy – I mean dead flat calm – with a 3 mph south-west wind. The swell is only 2ft from the northwest at 6 seconds, so it’s not a proper wave, but if you’ve got a log and just want to bob around without getting blown off the face of the earth, this is the only window that’s not a battle. The wave energy is a weak 33, so don’t expect much.
The second week, from the 26th of July, the swell energy finally starts to climb into the moderate range (192 on the morning of the 26th, 169 on the 27th), but the wind is still a consistent cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy at 4ft to 4ft. It’s not clean.
The very last chance comes on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. We get a glassy morning again with a 3 mph west wind, and the swell is 3ft from the northwest with an 8-second period, and the energy is 101 – our first sign of moderate power. It’s described as “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a day to get excited about. The morning of August 1st also has glassy conditions, but the swell is down to 3ft.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s no standout session. The best bet is Tuesday the 28th morning, and even then, keep your expectations firmly on the floor. It’s a bleak run for Le Porge.
Rusty.
