The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into what’s happening with the surf over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough start. For the first several days, from Friday the 17th right through to the end of the first week, the surf is just not happening. We’re looking at a real flat spell. The waves are tiny, the wind is mostly on it or cross-shore, and the energy is weak. The 17th and 18th are basically a write-off with swell heights barely hitting 0.7ft to 1ft and wind rippling everything up. There’s a little window of glassy conditions on the morning of Sunday the 19th, but the swell is still only 1ft, so it’s a pond. You’d be better off checking the tide pools.
The pattern stays poor through the middle of the week. Monday the 20th has a bit of a cleaner look with a cross-offshore breeze from the NE in the morning, but again, we’re stuck on 1ft swell. It’s not until we push into the second week that things start to look a little more interesting. By the 28th, we start seeing some longer-period energy creeping in. The morning of Tuesday the 28th has a 10-second period swell from the WNW, and the combined energy climbs to 126, which is moderate. But the waves are still only 2ft, so it’s not really surfable yet.
The first real standout pops up on Wednesday the 29th. The swell is still 3ft, but the period jumps to 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is 231, which is strong. However, the wind is on it in the morning and cross-onshore in the afternoon, so it’s messy. If you’re desperate, you might find a couple of clean lines early, but it’s not a classic.
Now, the best bet in the whole 16-day window is Thursday the 30th of July. The morning session at Le Porge is where you want to be. The swell is 4ft from the WNW, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is 246 – solid moderate-to-strong energy. But the real winner here is the wind. A light breeze from the NNE, which is cross-offshore, is keeping the face clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing crazy. This is the one morning that has a shot at offering some decent, clean waves. The afternoon does get choppy with a cross-onshore breeze, so make the most of the morning.
After that, we roll into the 31st and the 1st of August. The swell is actually bigger on Friday the 31st – 6ft in the morning – but the wind is straight cross-shore and choppy. That’s pushing it into the size where it’s not beginner-friendly, and with the wind, it’s just a bumpy mess. The 1st of August drops back to 3ft, but the wind is still cross-shore, so it’s not the clean morning we had on the 30th.
Overall, if you’ve got a window, the 30th July morning is the only real standout. Everything else is a struggle. The surf is inconsistent and the conditions are rarely aligning. It’s a flat spell that’s hard to break out of.
Rusty.
