The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Le Porge over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ve gotta be honest with you—this outlook is a tough one. The first recommendation doesn’t show up until the 29th of July, so we’re looking at a solid 13-day stretch with no surf worth paddling out for. The waves are either tiny, wind-chopped, or blown out entirely. The swell energy is weak, barely cracking three figures most days, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, just making a mess of things. It’s a bit of a dry spell, and that’s not unusual for this area when the conditions don’t line up.
The first real glimmer comes on Wednesday morning, 29th July. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is glassy—dead calm, slight air. It’s surfable but very ordinary, with a combined energy of only 40 (weak). Honestly, it’s a session for the longboard or a paddle, not a proper wave. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the 30th of July into the 31st. On Thursday afternoon the 30th, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW with a 13-second period (a solid groundswell), and the combined energy jumps to 653 (strong). That’s got some real grunt. But the wind is cross-onshore from the NW at 20 km/h, making it choppy and messy. Friday morning the 31st holds similar swell—5ft, WNW, 12-second period, energy at 670 (strong)—with a gentler cross-onshore wind, so it’s not as chopped up. Still, it’s marginal, and the tide might play games. The water temp anomaly is much warmer than normal, sitting at 78°F, which is a solid 9°F above average for this time of year—very unusual.
The only break in the mix is Le Porge itself, a beginner-friendly beach break. It’s fairly consistent but exposed, and with the swell direction coming from the WNW, it matches the optimum swell direction from the west. The waves are going to be around 5ft to 5ft, which is OK for intermediates but not for beginners—over 5ft is too much for the groms. The period is long (11–13 seconds), so you’ll get better-shaped waves with longer lulls between sets, making it easier to get out the back. But at a beach break, that long period can make them break a bit straight, so pick your peak.
If the wind swung offshore, we’d be talking, but cross-onshore and cross-shore winds are the story here. It’s a kite-surfing setup more than a clean paddle session for most of the forecast. The 31st morning is your best bet, but I wouldn’t be booking a trip around it.
Rusty.
