The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the Le Porge stretch over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty grim for a proper paddle session. The swell is almost non-existent and the wind is howling from the wrong directions for most of it. You’ll be staring at a lot of flat, choppy, or blown-out water. There are no real standouts, just a few moments that are barely worth a mention.
Let's start with this Sunday, the 19th. The morning is glassy as a mirror, with a tiny 1.0 ft swell from the WNW, but it’s a weak 8-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 21. It's basically a lake. The afternoon turns into a mess with a 19 mph cross-shore wind. Not happening.
Monday the 20th through to the end of July is a catalogue of poor surf. We’ve got a few clean mornings thanks to offshore or cross-offshore winds, but the swell is pathetic – we’re talking 0.3 ft to 2 ft and energy levels barely cracking 45. The water temp is a wild 79°, which is a massive 9° warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s like bathwater, but there’s no wave to enjoy it in.
The closest we get to anything rideable is on the morning of Tuesday the 29th of July. There’s a 4 ft NW swell with a 10-second period, and the energy is moderate at 286. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE at 9 mph, making it glassy. The rating says it’s marginal, and it’s only a 1 out of 10 on the score. It’s the only window in the whole run where the conditions align, but it’s still a long shot for a proper wave. The swell is just over 3 ft, so it’s fine for most, but the quality is questionable.
After that, it’s straight back to the doldrums. The 30th and 31st of July have tiny, weak WNW swells and cross-shore winds. The first week of August looks no better, with onshore winds and small, choppy waves. The morning of Monday the 3rd of August offers a clean 2 ft NW swell, but with a 5-second period, it’s a weak, windswell at best.
There’s a long gap of poor conditions here. Honestly, for a spot like Le Porge, which is exposed beach break, a blank run like this is pretty normal for the area. It’s a waiting game, and the forecasts can always change. For now, the kites might get a look in on the windy afternoons, but for the rest of us, it’s a stay-at-home kind of fortnight.
Rusty.
