The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our stretch of coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak run for the next couple of weeks. The first real chance of a paddle comes on Wednesday, 26th August, but honestly, it’s barely a whisper. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell pushing in from the west, and while the wind is light and offshore out of the east, keeping things clean, the energy is super weak (55). It’s a beginner-friendly morning, but only just. The water here is sitting at a very unusual 77°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels more like a bath than the Atlantic.
We then hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 27th is the first morning that actually gets interesting. The swell jumps up to a more solid 5ft out of the west, with a clean offshore breeze from the east-southeast. The energy jumps to a moderate 318, so there’s a bit of push behind it. This is your best bet of the whole outlook, but you’ll want to be out early – by the afternoon, a strong cross-onshore wind from the northwest wrecks it completely.
After that, it’s a proper write-off. Friday the 28th sees a huge, messy 12ft westerly swell, but with howling onshore winds (28-25 mph) and energy readings up in the thousands (2180-2969), it’s just a washing machine. That’s strictly for the experts, and even then, it’s a paddling nightmare. Saturday the 29th is much the same – a big 7ft swell but still hammered by onshore winds. At that size with that wind, the beach setup here looks more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers.
We get a small window again on Monday the 31st. The morning brings a clean 5ft west-northwest swell, with glassy conditions and an easterly breeze – dead calm. The energy is solid at 363. It’s the pick of the second week, but it’s short-lived as the wind swings onshore again by lunch.
The rest of the run into the first week of September is pretty uninspiring. There are a few tiny, weak swells with poor winds, and by the 6th and 7th, we’re back to big, windy, onshore conditions that are basically unsurfable.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re keen, the standouts are Thursday 27th and Monday 31st mornings. Everything else is a struggle. It’s a long, blank run, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Forecasts change.
Rusty.
