The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Le Porge for the next couple of weeks. It’s a slow start, but there are a few sessions worth wetting a line for.
Right now, there’s nothing good on the cards until Saturday the 22nd of August. You’ll have to sit through a few days of onshore slop and tiny waves. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is a solid 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s unusual, like bathwater, so you’ll be in a shortie or just boardies.
Saturday morning the 22nd is your first real chance. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the east, and we’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the WNW with a moderate 9-second period. Combined energy is 147 (moderate), so there’s enough push for a longboard or funboard. This is a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, but with glassy conditions, it’s gonna be real clean and inviting. Crowds can be a thing here sometimes, so get in early.
Sunday morning the 23rd is another small window – 2ft from the NW, a short 6-second period, but the wind is light and cross-off from the NE, keeping it clean. Energy is weak at 57, so it’s small and gutless, but if you’re desperate for a float, it’s surfable.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Sunday afternoon through the end of August, it’s mostly onshore wind, lumpy, and messy. The swell builds – we see 6ft, then 12ft, and even 10ft – but the wind is howling from the west, onshore or cross-on, making it a total washout for paddling. That big 12ft on Thursday the 27th with a 1970 combined energy reading is just a washing machine.
The only other standout comes on Monday the 31st of August. The morning is a write-off, but the afternoon session has an 12ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1433 (strong). The catch? The file flags it as too big for this break, and with a moderate cross-onshore breeze, it’ll be choppy and messy. Only for experts, and even then, it’s a dicey one.
Looking into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st has big 10ft to 8ft WNW groundswell (12-second period) but it’s cross-on and lumpy – not worth the hassle. Wednesday the 2nd morning looks promising with a cleaner 5ft from the WNW, cross-off wind from the SE, and 532 combined energy. That’s your best long-range bet, but it’s a week away, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, if you’re patient, Saturday morning the 22nd is your best shot for clean, easy waves. Everything else is either blown out or too big for the setup. For a beach break like this, the bigger onshore days are more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers.
Rusty.
