Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve got to level with you – this stretch of coast is going into a real slumber for a while. The swell is small, the winds are messy, and it’s going to take some serious patience to find anything worth paddling out for. The water is a warm 76°F, which is about 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t shiver while you’re waiting.
Let’s start with Le Porge. The first real chance at a wave is Sunday morning, July 5th. There’s a tiny 2ft swell coming from the WNW, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NE at 6 mph. That gives you clean, small waves – surfable, but nothing to write home about. The combined energy is only 87, so there’s no grunt in it. The afternoon goes straight downhill with a strong NNW cross-breeze turning the surface into a chop-fest.
Monday the 6th of July is actually your best call for the whole first week. The morning has that light offshore from the ESE at just 3 mph, which will groom that 2ft WNW swell into glassy little lines. It’s tiny, but it’s your cleanest window. The combined energy is down at 54, so it’s gutless, but if you’ve got a longboard and you just need to get wet, that’s your moment.
From Tuesday the 7th all the way through to Saturday the 11th, it’s a brutal run of onshore and cross-onshore winds, messy conditions, and swell barely reaching 2ft. Not worth the drive.
There’s a brief glimmer on Friday the 10th of July in the morning. The wind goes dead calm – glassy – and the swell is 2ft from the WNW with a 9-second period. It’s clean, but very small. The energy is only 56. You might find a tiny little roller if you’re determined.
We then hit another long stretch of poor conditions. The morning of Wednesday the 15th of July is another glassy calm moment, with a 2ft WNW swell and a 10-second period. The energy is up a little to 118, so there’s slightly more push. That morning window will be clean but again, it’s on the small side. The 16th of July morning also has a light offshore – clean, but tiny.
Looking into the longer range, there’s a bigger pulse showing up for the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July. Saturday the 18th brings a 4ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is a direct onshore at 12 mph. That’s a blown-out, choppy mess. The combined energy is 184, so there’s some water moving, but it’s not for paddling. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Sunday the 19th is smaller and still messy.
If I’m forced to pick a standout from this whole run, it’s Monday morning, July 6th at Le Porge. Clean, offshore wind, tiny but surfable. The other mention goes to Saturday the 18th, but that’s strictly for the kite crew. For a surfer, it’s a hard pass. The second week has a couple of glassy mornings, but nothing that’s going to get the stoke up.
Stick with it, these quiet spells always break.
Rusty.
