The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Le Porge. I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s been a tough stretch for waves around here, and the truth is, the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for any kind of decent paddle session. The water is a balmy 77°F right now, which is much warmer than usual for the time of year, nearly 9°F above average, which is seriously unusual.
We're looking at a solid 10-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days, from Wednesday the 15th right through to the end of the weekend on the 19th, it’s all tiny, weak swell with poor quality onshore wind. That WNW swell is barely 1ft to 2ft, with combined energy sitting in the low double digits (25 to 41), and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or straight onshore. Not a chance.
There’s a couple of mornings, like the 19th, where the wind goes glassy, but with only 1ft of swell and no energy, it’s just a flat lake. Not worth the wetsuit.
The first week of the run is a write-off. Even into the second week, from the 22nd through the 29th, we see a few more promising swells, but they’re still dogged by poor conditions. The swell starts to nudge up, especially around the 25th and 26th, with a 4ft to 5ft west-northwest swell pushing the combined energy up to 181, which is a moderate wave energy. But it’s all onshore wind, so it’ll be a messy, blown-out crumble. The 27th and 28th see a small drop off again.
The only real moment of interest is on the morning of the 23rd of July. We get a 2ft from the southwest, with a light cross-offshore wind from the northeast, making for clean, surfable conditions. The combined energy is a weak 44, the period is a short 6 seconds, so you’re not getting much power, but it’s the only window in the whole forecast that isn’t a total write-off. It’s graded as a 1 out of 10, so it’s a session for the longboard to get wet, not for any sort of real performance.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, the setup here is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The swell is there on the 25th and 26th, but the wind is just too strong and onshore to make it a good wave. Forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for too long, but right now, you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty.
