Right then, let’s talk about Le Porge. This stretch of coast has a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there are a couple of windows if you’re patient. The water is sitting at 76°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – you won’t need a thick suit, that’s for sure.
The first real chance to get out is on Sunday morning, the 5th of July. We’ve got a clean 2 ft swell rolling in from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is light offshore from the ENE. That’s a nice combo – clean, small waves, but surfable. The combined energy is low at 92, so don’t expect any power, but for a beginner-friendly spot like Le Porge, it’s a good chance to get wet without getting worked. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have company, but it’s worth a look.
Monday morning, the 6th, is similar – 2 ft from the WNW, 9-second period, and light offshore wind from the east. Again, clean conditions with low energy (55). Not a standout, but another sessionable morning if you’re keen.
Things get a bit more interesting much later in the forecast. Friday morning, the 17th of July, sees a jump in swell – 4 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, combined energy hitting 227 (moderate). The wind is light cross-shore from the NNW, so expect a bit of texture but nothing messy. This is a step up in size and energy, but it’s still manageable for intermediates. Keep in mind that when the swell gets over 5 ft it gets too big for beginners, and by Friday afternoon it’s 5 ft with a cross-onshore wind, which turns poor real quick. So the morning window on the 17th is your best bet for something with a bit more push.
Saturday morning, the 18th, has a 4 ft swell from the WNW, period of 8 seconds, and light cross-shore wind again. Energy is moderate at 157. Not as clean as the 17th, but still surfable if you’re not fussed about perfect conditions.
Sunday morning, the 19th, is the last real look-in – 2 ft from the WNW with an 8-second period, but the wind is cross-offshore from the NNE, which should keep the faces reasonably clean. Energy is low though, at 77.
Honestly, the standout in the whole 16-day run is Friday morning, the 17th of July. It’s the biggest clean-ish swell of the period, and the direction is right on the money for the break’s optimum from the west. Just don’t sleep on it, because it gets messy fast in the afternoon.
Otherwise, there are big gaps with no real recommendations. From Tuesday the 7th right through to Thursday the 16th, it’s mostly poor conditions – onshore winds, chop, or tiny waves. You’ll be sitting that out unless you like paddling in a washing machine.
Rusty.
