The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty with a look at what’s on offer for Le Porge.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag of ups and downs. We’ve got some serious swell potential rolling in, but the wind’s going to be the main character for a lot of this run, and often not in a good way. There’s a big gap of pretty poor conditions to start before we get a few windows of hope, and then it turns wild again. The water is much warmer than usual for this time of year at 78°, which is a nice bonus.
We kick off Wednesday the 19th with tiny surf, a mere 1ft of weak WNW windswell. The wind is on it, so it’s a complete non-starter. That carries through to the next day Thursday the 20th, where the swell picks up a bit to 4ft with a longer 11-second period (moderate energy at 346), but it’s cross-on and lumpy. We get a small break on Saturday morning the 22nd. The swell is a modest 4ft from the WNW, but we finally get some offshore wind from the ESE. It’s clean, but the energy is weak (190) and the waves are only surfable, nothing special.
After that, it’s back to a long stretch of junk. From Saturday afternoon through to the end of the month, it’s mostly onshore winds, dropping swell, or both. There’s a couple of clean windows in there like Monday the 24th with offshore wind, but the swell is tiny and short period (3ft at 4 seconds, energy only 31). That’s barely a ripple. This is a real dry spell for any kind of quality.
The first sign of something real comes on Friday the 28th of August. Morning looks like our best bet in this whole forecast. We’ve got a solid 5ft of WNW groundswell rolling in with a nice 10-second period, and the wind is light and cross-off from the SE. The conditions should be clean, and with 480 of moderate surf energy, it’ll have some push. This is the standout window for a proper session.
Saturday the 29th drops away quickly, and then it gets wild. Sunday the 30th has strong onshore winds and messy 5ft waves. The real drama hits on Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September. The swell just explodes. Monday morning and afternoon are pumping 10ft of pure W swell with a long 10 to 11-second period. The energy is massive – over 2000 – but the wind is howling onshore from the W at 18-19 mph. This is a full-on, blown-out mess. Unless you’re an expert and don't mind it ugly, this is more of a kite-surfing show. The swell direction is a bit north of the ideal west for the break, which doesn’t help.
Finally, we get one more clean chance on Thursday morning the 3rd of September. The swell drops to a much more manageable 4ft from the west, and the wind goes glassy. That’s the word. With moderate energy (205) and glassy conditions, it could be a lovely, clean session before it goes onshore again in the afternoon.
So, to sum it up: the best two windows on offer are Friday morning the 28th of August for the best combo of size and clean conditions, and Thursday morning the 3rd of September for the magic glassy finish. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or way too big and messy for a good paddle.
Rusty.
