The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Le Porge.
This is a tough stretch for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long, hard run of small, wind-affected surf with very few windows of clean conditions. The water is a balmy 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re staring at the ocean.
The first few days are a write-off. Monday through Wednesday, we’re dealing with westerly winds onshore, and the swell is puny – 2ft to 1.0ft with a short period, and a combined energy barely registering. It’s just not worth a paddle.
Thursday the 20th is the first flicker of hope. Early morning, the wind goes glassy, absolutely dead calm, and we get a little bump of groundswell from the WNW at 3ft with a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 200. It’s going to be clean, but the size is super tiny. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but honestly, it’s barely surfable. That glassy window is the only thing saving it, but it’s not a standout.
The 22nd and 23rd offer a couple of moments. Saturday the 22nd morning is glassy again but the swell is weak – 3ft at 7 seconds and energy dropping to 99. Sunday the 23rd morning has a clean cross-offshore wind from the NE, but the swell is a measly 2ft. Ordinary conditions, ordinary surf.
After that, we hit another dead zone. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Friday the 28th morning, it’s onshore winds and weak, choppy surf. The wind is relentless, and the swell just doesn’t have the juice to overcome it.
Now, the real event happens late in the window. On Saturday the 29th of August, the swell absolutely fires up. We’re looking at a massive 12ft groundswell from the W at 13 seconds, with a combined energy reading of 3829 – that’s serious power. But here’s the catch: the wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the WSW at 12 mph, and the wave comment says it’s too big for this break. This is expert territory only and, frankly, with the onshore wind, it’s going to be a full-on, messy, washing machine. For a spot like Le Porge, a beach break, that much energy with cross-shore wind is going to be a beast. It’s more interesting for the kite surfers than dedicated paddle surfing.
From the 30th through to the 1st of September, the swell stays big – 7ft to 5ft – but the wind never cleans up. It’s mostly cross-onshore, and the conditions are described as poor or marginal. There’s just no real quality on offer.
So, the honest truth? There’s no true standout session in this 16-day window. The best chance for a clean wave is the early glass on Thursday the 20th, but it’s tiny. The big swell on the 29th is powerful but messy and dangerous. It’s a lean period. Hang in there.
Rusty.
