The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’m looking at the 16-day forecast for our little corner of the coast. Gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a tough watch. The good news is, there’s some real promise right at the tail end, but we’ve got a long, flat spell to get through first.

From Monday afternoon (31st August) all the way through to the morning of Saturday the 5th of September, the conditions at Le Dossen are just plain rough. We’re getting cross-onshore and onshore winds, mostly from the west-northwest, with waves around 3 to 8 ft but it's all chop and junk. The combined wave energy is all over the shop, from weak to moderate (72-999), but with that wind, it’s not worth paddling out. Keep the board in the car.

Then we hit a proper gap. From Saturday the 5th of September morning through to the 11th, it’s a no-go zone. The surf is there, but either the wind is messy or the quality is so poor it’s a waste of time. You might see a clean window on the morning of Sunday the 6th with some light offshore SE winds and 3 ft swell (energy 150), but it’s barely a ripple.

The real standouts arrive around the 14th and 15th of September. This is where it gets interesting for the more experienced crew. On Monday the 14th of September, we start seeing some proper swell building. The Le Dossen morning has 7 ft from the west (energy 629), but it's a bit bumpy. The afternoon, though, picks up to 8 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period and a massive energy spike to 1035. That’s proper. It's onshore wind unfortunately, so it'll be a little lumpy, but there’s a lot of water moving.

However, the standout is Tuesday the 15th of September morning. The swell is 7 ft from the WNW with an 11-second period (energy 1141). The wind is a light cross-shore from the WSW. That combo means decent shape and lots of push. The afternoon could also be good with 7 ft from the WNW (energy 961) and light offshore NW winds turning it glassy. This is the best on offer, but at over 6 ft, this is for experienced surfers only – beginners stay out of the way. The water temp is sitting around 62°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Don't hold your breath for the first week. That Tuesday the 15th of September window is your target. Promising, but we’ll see how the details stack up closer to the time.

Rusty.
