The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight up about this one. The outlook for the next 16 days is a real struggle. We’ve got a solid gap of flat, poor conditions for the first week and a half before anything worth paddling out for shows up on the radar.
The only spot we’re looking at is La Playita. It's a beginner-friendly reef break that's fairly consistent, but we're in a rough patch. The water's warm, sitting at 83°, which is about average for this time of year.
Right now, for Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th, there's hardly any energy. The combined swell energy is a measly 51 (weak), pushing a tiny 3ft swell from the NE with a short period of 6 seconds. To make matters worse, the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. Friday and Saturday, August 7th and 8th, are totally flat with no surf at all. This blank run continues day after day. There’s a slight bump on Sunday the 9th morning with 3ft at 6 seconds again, but that weak 60 energy (weak) and onshore winds kill any hope of a clean wave. This pattern of tiny, weak, messy swells repeats until mid-August. The August 12th afternoon shows a 3ft swell at 6 seconds with 76 energy (weak), but again it's cross-onshore and messy. You’d be better off on a kiteboard than a paddle board out there.
We see a slight improvement on Sunday, August 16th. The early morning session shows a 4ft swell from the NE with a slightly better 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to 235 (moderate), which feels like some actual push. The wind swings to a light offshore from the N, which should clean up the faces compared to the rest of the week. This is the most promising window, but it's still described as “poor surf conditions,” so don't expect a classic. Monday morning the 17th is flat again, and by Monday afternoon a 3ft at 8 seconds swell shows up with 108 energy (moderate), but gets chopped up by cross-onshore winds.
Honestly, the standout session is the morning of Sunday, August 16th. The 4ft NE swell, with that moderate 235 energy and light offshore wind, will be the cleanest and most surfable we see in this whole outlook. It’s not big, but for beginners at La Playita, it’s the only real window. After that, the forecast shows more flat, choppy days. A glassy morning on Tuesday, August 18th offers no swell, and the run ends flat again.
Keep your expectations low. The long spell of weak energy and onshore wind is tough. August 16th morning is your best bet, but it’s still a gamble.
Rusty.
