The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s break down what we’re working with over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be honest, you’re gonna need to be patient. The first few days are a total write-off, with nothing but tiny, weak waves and cross-onshore winds ruining any chance of a decent paddle. That goes from Tuesday the 4th right through to Friday morning the 7th. It’s a dead zone.
Our first real shot of energy hits on Friday the 7th of August. We’re talking a 10-foot swell out of the South, with a combined energy reading of 1892, and clean cross-offshore winds out of the Southwest. That is a serious amount of water moving. The period is only 10 seconds, so it’s a bit of a wind swell, but at that size, it’s going to be raw and powerful. Anything over 8 feet is expert-only, and this fits the bill. La Isla is a reef, so it can handle it, but this isn’t a day for the faint of heart. Friday afternoon stays just as big, with energy hitting 2720, but it’s still a marginal situation for most.
The real standout, the one you want to pencil in, is Saturday morning the 8th of August. That’s your session. The swell drops to a much more manageable 4 to 5 feet from the Southeast, but it picks up a proper 11-second period, giving it some real shape and push. The wind is offshore from the West-Northwest, and the combined energy is a solid 467. This is the cleanest, most user-friendly mix of size and quality we see in the whole 16-day run. La Isla should be offering up some well-formed, lined-up waves. It’s fairly consistent, so you won’t be sitting there staring at flat water, but it can get a crowd when it’s good, so expect some company in the water.
After that Saturday high, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Sunday through to the middle of the week has cross-offshore winds that keep things from getting really good. The swell hangs around the 4 to 5-foot range, but the wind just isn’t cooperating. Then on Tuesday the 18th of August, we get another chance. The morning shows a 4-foot Easterly swell with a 10-second period and gentle offshore winds. The energy is moderate at 440, and the surf conditions are expected to be good, but it’s not quite that Saturday magic.
Then, on Wednesday the 19th of August, we get a real treat. The wind goes dead calm, glassy, with a small 3-foot Easterly swell. It’s tiny, but when it’s glassy like that, you take it. That’s a morning for a longboard, a slow coffee, and some real peace and quiet on the water.
So, the bottom line: skip the first few days. The absolute winner, the one to plan for, is Saturday the 8th of August, early. That’s your best chance for a proper session with some power and clean conditions. Keep that Tuesday the 18th as a solid backup, and if you’re after a mellow, glassy morning, that Wednesday the 19th is your sleeper hit.
Rusty.
