The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for La Arena over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a bit of a slow burn. We're in for a long stretch of small, messy surf starting right now. From Friday the 17th through the end of the following week, most of the days are just not worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, often under 2ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making it a real chop-fest. You'll see some energy building around Monday the 20th, with the combined swell energy hitting 124 (moderate), but it's still coming from a poor direction with a short period, so it won't be any good. This poor run carries on through the 25th and 26th, with a bit more size on the 26th (5ft) but rain and onshore winds ruin it.
The one bright spot, and the true standout, is a window on Monday the 27th of July. For the morning session, the stars finally align. We've got a clean 4ft swell from the NNW, and the wind is glassy—dead calm. That's a major positive. The wave energy is pumping, with a combined energy of 332 (strong), which means there's some proper push behind it. The period is 10 seconds, so it's a decent groundswell with some good shape. This is the morning to be in the water. La Arena is a beginner-friendly break, and with 4ft, it's approachable for confident learners and a fun size for everyone else. The water is a very unusual 74°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
After that, it drops back off. Tuesday the 28th has a clean morning with some cross-offshore wind, but the swell drops to 3ft. The energy is moderate (126), but it's just not the same quality as the day before. The end of the month and into August 1st sees a bigger, more powerful swell (up to 4ft from the NW with periods of 10-11 seconds and combined energy up to 387), but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it's going to be a messy, choppy affair. Not one for the paddle board.
So, to sum it up: don't hold your breath until Monday the 27th. That's your one morning of magic. Everything else is a write-off.
Rusty.
