The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this outlook is a tough one for the immediate future. The only break on the cards is Ketewel, and we’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions before anything even looks marginal.
The whole 16-day window is a write-off for a proper surf. The pattern is locked in: a relentless cross-onshore wind (SE) and choppy, messy waves. From Saturday the 18th right through to the end of the month, the forecast shows nothing but “poor surf conditions” or “marginal” at best. That’s a solid two-week gap with no real recommendations. The combined swell energy is moderate at best, often in the hundreds (820, 707, etc.), but that doesn’t matter when the wind’s ruining it.
The water temperature is sitting at 82°F, which is about normal for this time of year, just a touch warmer than average.
Ketewel (Bali) is a sheltered reef, best with a south swell, and it’s an advanced, inconsistent spot. The crowds are possible here. But the wind is just wrong. On Saturday morning, the 18th, we’ve got a 4ft swell from the SSW with a long 15-second period, but that 12 mph cross-onshore breeze makes it ugly. The same story repeats for days. The swell direction is good, but the wind is a killer.
The only time the numbers even hint at something is on Monday the 20th, when the swell bumps up to 6ft to 7ft from the SSW, with a 17-second period. That’s some serious energy coming through (2232). But again, the wind is cross-onshore at 12 mph, and the best it gets is a “marginal” rating. That’s not a surf you’d paddle out for.
Further out, on the 1st of August, there’s an 8ft SE swell, but that’s borderline too big for most and the period is short at 10 seconds. The wind is still cross-onshore. It’s a messy, blown-out situation.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. Not a single day with clean, rideable waves. If you’re desperate, the 20th of July has the biggest swell, but it’s a gamble. For the rest of the time, this coastline is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, with that steady cross-onshore wind.
Hang in there. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
