The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at what’s on the cards for Ketewel over the next couple of weeks.
First thing you gotta know: this is a reef setup that really needs a clean S or SSW direction to work, and for this whole stretch we’ve got solid, persistent SSW swell energy pourin’ in. The water’s sittin’ at about 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – no weirdness there.
Right out of the gate, Tuesday the 18th, we’ve got some serious wave energy in the water – the combined swell energy is 1867 in the morning, that’s strong stuff. But don’t get too excited yet. Tuesday morning sees a 4ft SSW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds, but it’s got a light 6 mph SE cross-onshore breeze. That wind is gonna put small ripples on the face, and the call is that it’s only marginal. The afternoon bumps up to 6ft, still with that long 16-second period, but the wind picks up to 9 mph SE and it gets fairly choppy – score is poor.
Wednesday the 19th sees the swell really muscle up – 7ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon, with that same very long period (18 seconds in the mornin’, 17 in the arvo). The combined energy jumps to a massive 3068 and then 3562 – that’s very strong. But again, it’s cross-onshore at 9 mph, so it’s messy and only marginal at best. This size is already pushin’ into “experts only” territory for most, and with the chop, it’s not the clean, lined-up reef wave you’re after.
That pattern holds all the way through to about Sunday the 23rd. Swell sticks around 5ft to 8ft, periods stay long (15-17 seconds), and the wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore from the SE or ESE at 9-12 mph. The combined energy is strong the whole time – triple digits and often over 2000. You’ll see some of those afternoon sessions flick to an “on” wind state, which should be offshore from the SE, but the descriptions still say only poor or marginal. It’s not comin’ together.
Now there is a little window that starts lookin’ more interesting toward the very end of the forecast. Monday morning the 31st of August is where you want to circle on the calendar. Swell is a solid 6ft from the SSW with a nice 16-second period, but the real game-changer is the wind – light breeze from the S at just 6 mph and it’s straight offshore (“on”). That’s the cleanest we’ve seen by a long shot, and the combined energy is still strong at 1734. This is the standout. It’s still advanced-level surf at 6ft over a reef, but with that offshore glass, it’s gonna be lined up and proper. Crowds are sometimes a thing at Ketewel, so you won’t have it to yourself, but on a Monday it might be manageable.
Tuesday the 1st of September also looks promising. Morning has a 7ft SSW swell at 17 seconds with a gentle 9 mph SE offshore – that’s a bit stronger wind but still favourable. The combined energy is 2483, very strong. The afternoon has 8ft at 16 seconds. That’s gettin’ big, but if you’re an experienced surfer and the wind holds, it’s gonna be a ripper.
Wednesday the 2nd of September looks clean too, with a 7ft SSW swell in the morning and a light 6 mph SE offshore, easing a touch in the arvo to 6ft.
So the honest word is this: the first week and a half is a write-off for good surfing at Ketewel – there’s plenty of juice in the water, but the cross-onshore wind is ruinin’ the quality. It’s choppy, messy, and those long-period swells are just gettin’ torn up. If you had a kite, you’d be havin’ a ball, but for a paddle surfer it’s a frustrating watch. Then from Monday the 31st of August through Wednesday the 2nd of September, the wind finally swings offshore and you get your clean, long-period groundswell. That’s the gold. Take the Monday for the best mix of size and glass.
