The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk Induruwa.
The next week and a half is gonna be a bit of a struggle. There’s plenty of swell energy floating around – the combined energy reading is anywhere from 1405 to 2426 (moderate to strong) – and the swell periods are nice and long, up to 19 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, which is class for a reef setup. The problem? The wind is stuck onshore from the west, and there’s a constant threat of thunderstorms. This keeps the surface bumpy and poor. The swell direction is mainly from the south or south-southwest, which is close to the spot’s best direction, but with the onshore wind, it doesn’t matter much. For the first week, the best scores I see are marginal at best. Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th have swell around 1.7m, but with wind like that, it’s gonna be a choppy mess. Honestly, for a paddler, this is more of a windsurf or kite session.
But don’t write it off completely. The 18th of August (Tuesday) and the 19th (Wednesday) are the ones to watch. The combined energy jumps to 2175 and 2606 – that’s strong, powerful energy. You’ve got a 1.7m to 2.1m SSW swell with a period of 16 to 18 seconds. That’s genuine groundswell, and it’s got some punch. The wind on the 18th afternoon drops to a gentle breeze, still cross-onshore, but it’ll be less choppy. That’s your best shot. At 2.1m and that period, it’s expert territory – powerful, and it might close out a bit on the beach breaks, but the reef at Induruwa should handle it. Crowds are only sometimes an issue, so it could be worth the wait.
Water temp is about normal for the season, nothing odd there.
So yeah, it’s a rough start, but look toward the 18th and 19th of August. That’s the window where it could all come together. Forecasts change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
