The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We've got a long stretch ahead, but it's a bit of a mixed bag at Green Ball. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
The big picture is that we're looking at a lengthy run of onshore, cross-onshore wind, which is going to keep things pretty choppy and messy. The swell is coming from the SSW and SW, which is the right direction for this reef, but the wind is going to be the main issue. For the most part, the wave energy is moderate to strong, with values in the thousands, but the quality is just not there.
The first real standout, and the only one I'd get excited about, is the Friday morning of the 28th of August. The swell jumps up to 10 feet from the SSW at a 16-second period, and the combined energy is a meaty 4428. This is proper groundswell, and it's going to be a big one. However, with a 10-foot swell, this is strictly for advanced surfers only. The wind is still a cross-on from the SSE at 9 mph, so it's not going to be glassy, but it's a gentle breeze, so it's the best we're going to see. The long period will make it a bit fat and walled on a beach break, but this is a reef, so it should focus up nicely. The guiding says this spot is "fairly consistent" and "sometimes" crowded, so expect a few others out there for this one.
The following Saturday morning, the 29th of August, is a secondary option. Swell drops to 7 feet from the SSW, still a 15-second period, with energy at 1885. The wind is the same story, a gentle cross-on from the SE. It's a step down in size, but still a solid wave for the more experienced crew.
The rest of the 16-day window is a bit of a write-off, honestly. The wind stays onshore, the swell is either too small, too short period, or both. You'll see some marginal conditions, but nothing that's going to get the heart pumping. The first week of September, from the 1st to the 7th, we've got a consistent run of 6 feet to 8 feet SW swells, but the cross-onshore wind is relentless, keeping a chop on the surface. It's a real shame, because the swell direction is right, but the wind is just ruining the party.
Bottom line: the only day to circle on the calendar is Friday the 28th of August morning. It's going to be a powerful, confrontational day at Green Ball. For the rest, you're better off waiting for a change in the wind.
Rusty, signing off.
