The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a pretty bleak 16-day window for Gornostay, a reef break that’s already inconsistent and rarely breaks. The water is sitting at 68°F; that’s a massive 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a real standout and feels like a weird bath for July.
The whole pattern is a tough one. There’s hardly any wave energy to speak of for most of the run. The first real hope is a tiny blip on Thursday morning, 16 July. We get a glassy start with a 4ft swell from the South. The combined energy is moderate (210), and it’s a clean 9-second period, which at least gives a bit of shape. The wind is dead calm, glassy – that’s a major positive for a rare chance to have a wave to yourself. It stays clean through the afternoon with a slight cross-off breeze. This is the only real standout on offer, and it’s still just “surfable but ordinary.”
After that, it’s a long, sad gap. From Friday, 17 July, right through to Tuesday, 29 July, the surf is consistently poor with tiny heights and onshore winds. The combined energy drops to single or low double digits. There’s a period between the 18th and the 28th where the swell is barely 1ft with periods of 3-5 seconds and wind is always onshore or cross-onshore. This is a stretch of well over a week with absolutely nothing worth paddling out for.
There’s a very faint pulse on Wednesday, 29 July, morning with a 1ft swell from the South, but it’s onshore and the energy is still weak (20). It’s more of the same: poor surf. The whole run is a blank.
For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this kind of 16-day gap is more normal than a surprise. If you’re desperate, Thursday morning, 16 July, is your only window – glassy, waist-high South swell, and you’ll have the place to yourself because nobody else will bother. The rest of the time, the onshore winds and tiny swell make this look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on the beach sections.
Rusty.
