The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve had a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille).
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty slow start. We’re looking at a solid five days from the 12th right through to the 16th of August where the swell is pretty much non-existent. You’re better off doing something else because there’s no surf to speak of. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no shocks there.
There’s a bit of a tease from the 17th, but it’s just tiny pulses of weak energy, not worth paddling out for. Honestly, the real story here is the wait for the end of the run.
The standout window finally arrives on Sunday the 23rd of August. The morning is shaping up to be the one to circle. We’re seeing a solid 7 ft swell from the WSW, and the wind is out of the ENE at a light 6 mph, which is offshore and clean as a whistle. The wave energy is strong (584), so there’s some proper power behind it. Now, that is a big boy swell at over 5 ft, so it’s not one for the beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, that’s a serious session on your hands. The period is a touch short at 7 seconds, which is typical for a windswell, so expect it to be a bit sectiony but still plenty fun in the clean morning light. The break is a beach/jetty setup, but with that much energy, it’ll be handling it fine. The crowds are often here, so expect some company, but for a standout like that, it’s worth it.
After that, Monday the 24th morning has some leftover waist-high swell at 3 ft (54 energy) and clean offshore wind again, but it’s nothing special – just surfable. Everything else after that drops right off again into tiny, poor conditions. So, make the most of that Sunday the 23rd, because that’s your best and really only true play in this whole 16-day period.
Rusty.
