The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the Versilia coast.

To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty lean for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). This is a beach/jetty setup that’s exposed to SW swell, and the problem is we just don’t have any real energy coming in for a long stretch. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 83°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.

We’re looking at a big gap here. From tomorrow, Friday the 7th, all the way through to Monday the 17th of August, it’s essentially flat. You’ll see tiny dribbles of 0.7ft to 1ft swell with period under 7 seconds – that’s just wind chop, not surf. The combined energy is mostly in the single digits (2 to 18), so there’s nothing to get excited about. The wind is often glassy in the mornings, but with no waves, that doesn’t matter.

The first real sign of life shows up on the morning of Monday the 18th. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the SW with an 8-second period. The combined energy climbs to 125, which is moderate. The morning is glassy, so it’ll be clean. It’s still small, and the short period means it won’t have much punch, but it’s the first surfable wave in over a week. The afternoon sees it drop to 3ft and the wind swings cross-on, so your best bet is that early session on the 18th.

After that, it fades back to tiny stuff for the rest of the window. Tuesday the 19th morning is glassy again but only 1ft, and it just peters out from there.

Honestly, for a beach break like this, with such small, short-period SW swell, it’s not going to be a standout. The only session worth paddling for is the morning of Monday the 18th of August. It’s not a classic, but it’s all we’ve got.

Rusty.
