The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf outlook for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) over the next few weeks.

Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you—this is a lean stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell of poor surf conditions that runs from now all the way through to the end of July. That’s over a week with nothing worth paddling out for. The water is cookin’ though, at 82.2°F on the 20th, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you’re just keen for a float, it’s not all bad.

The first real flicker of hope doesn’t show up until Saturday, the 1st of August. That morning, we’ve got a tiny 2.3ft swell from the SW, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak (39), so it’s not going to be powerful, but the wind is glassy, and it’s a clean morning. It’s a beginner-friendly spot anyway, so for the absolute beginner, that might be a fun little session. Not a standout.

Now, the only time this place starts to look interesting is on Tuesday, the 4th of August. We get a solid pulse of swell: 5.6ft in the morning, building to 6.6ft in the afternoon, both from the WSW. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s not a groundswell, but the combined energy jumps to moderate (347 in the morning, 592 in the afternoon). For a beach/jetty setup like this, that’s a lot of juice. The wind in the morning is glassy, which is a major plus—clean conditions for a wave that’s got some push. The afternoon sees a light cross-onshore breeze, so morning is your window. This swell is over 5ft, so it’s getting a bit much for beginners, and by the afternoon over 6.6ft, that’s expert territory only. The short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly, but it’s the best on offer by a long shot.

If you’re an experienced surfer, the morning of Tuesday the 4th of August is your one true standout. Get on it.
