The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our stretch of coast.

Honestly, looking at the next 16 days, it’s a real mixed bag. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, messy, or flat conditions to start with, and it’s not until the end of the month that we see any real promise. The water is sitting at a very unusual 83°F, which is a solid 7°F warmer than what we’d normally expect for this time of year. It feels like a bath.

The only real standout in the whole window is the morning of Friday the 28th of August. Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) is looking at a solid 8ft swell from the southwest with a moderate 7-second period. The real kicker is the glassy conditions – that’s a massive positive. The combined wave energy hits 855 (moderate to strong), so there’s plenty of push. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Paddling out will be a breeze between sets, and those waves should have some shape. It’s a fair bit of size for a beach/jetty setup, so it’ll be a step up for the beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is the session.

Following that, the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September rolls in with another solid pulse. We’re looking at 7ft from the WSW with a period of 7 seconds, and a clean offshore breeze from the ESE. The energy is strong at 700. This is a promising second option, but it’s further out, so keep an eye on it. The afternoon might get a bit tricky with a cross-shore wind, so get it early.

The rest of the time is pretty grim. We’ve got a long gap from now until the 28th of August with nothing worth paddling out for. A few mornings with tiny, clean waves, like the 4ft on Friday the 21st, but the conditions are ordinary. The last week of August and into September has a few mornings with light winds, but the swell is just too small or too weak to be fun. The short period swell (under 8 seconds) we see a lot of the time means the waves will be a bit crumbly and gutless. On the 29th, the wind is howling onshore, making it a complete mess.

So, to sum it up: be patient. The morning of the 28th of August is your best bet. Get on it.

Rusty.
