The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – if you’re looking for a proper surf, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at the forecast for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) and honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s pretty much a flat spell. You’ll be staring at a lake-like sea for the first ten days or so. From the 14th right through to the 24th of August, the swell energy is either zero or so weak it’s not worth mentioning. The water’s running at a very warm 83°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it. There are a few glassy mornings in there, but with no waves to polish, it’s just a nice day for a swim.
The only glimmer of hope shows up way out on the 25th of August. Tuesday morning, we finally see a pulse of 4ft swell from the WSW, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 200, but it’s still a messy, short-period windswell. On top of that, the wind is light and cross-shore, which isn't ideal. It’s a marginal call. The afternoon sees the swell bump up to 5ft and energy at 232, but the wind swings onshore from the SW. Not great. The 26th of August actually pushes the swell up to 6ft from the WSW with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy hits a strong 435 – that’s the most power we’ll see. But the wind is straight onshore and strong at 12 mph, which will chop it up badly. For a beach/jetty setup, that’s not a paddle-surfing situation; it’s more of a kite-surfing kind of day. By the 27th of August, the swell drops to 3ft with a slightly better 8-second period, and the morning wind is offshore from the ENE, making it clean. The energy is moderate at 119, so it’s surfable, but very ordinary.
If I had to pick the best of a bad bunch, I’d point you to the 27th of August, Thursday morning. That 3ft WSW swell with the clean offshore wind is the only time it looks like a proper surf session. The size is small, and the period is a bit short, but it’s the cleanest wave we’ll see. The rest of the run is a write-off. Don’t get too bummed – this area tends to have these flat spells, and forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
