The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what we’ve got. To be honest with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. I’m looking at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) (Italy), and honestly, the surf is mostly a no-go.
The only morning that shows a glimmer of life is Tuesday morning, August 18th. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell rolling in from the SW with a period of 7 seconds, and combined energy is weak at just 67. The swell direction is spot on from the SW, which is what this spot wants to see. The real winner here is the wind – it’s glassy, dead calm from the ENE. That means the surface will be like a mirror. These are small, soft waves, perfect for beginners. But don't get too excited; the rest of the day and the next few days drop right off.
After that, it’s a total flat spell. From Wednesday, August 19th, right through to Monday, September 2nd, the surf is basically non-existent. We see a few mornings with tiny ankle-biters, but the `combined energy` is in single digits – absolutely no push. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday, August 25th where a 4ft SW swell appears, with moderate energy (131), but the wind is a messy cross-shore from the NW, and by the afternoon it’s a full-on onshore gale from the SW at 22 mph. That’s a write-off.
Given the setup is a beach with a jetty, and most of the time we have onshore wind and weak surf, this place looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than someone with a paddleboard.
So, the honest truth: there’s no standout session here. If you are a complete beginner and just want to feel a tiny wave in glassy conditions, Tuesday morning is your only shot. For everyone else, it’s a two-week blank. It’s a shame, but that’s the way it goes sometimes around here. Forecasts can change though, so don’t chuck the board in the loft just yet.
Rusty.
