The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about the next couple of weeks – it's a tough stretch for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). We're looking at a long, dry spell of tiny, weak waves with very little energy behind them. The offshore winds that could clean things up are around, but there's just nothing to work with on the swell front.
The water here is sitting at 83°, which is a full 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's very unusual, and it adds a bit of a tropical feel to the wait.
We kick off Wednesday, July 29th, with a tiny 0.7ft WSW swell. The combined energy is only 3 – very weak. The morning is glassy, which is a tease, but it's just not enough to paddle for. The whole first week is pretty much a write-off. We get a few glassy mornings on the 30th, 31st, and into Saturday, August 1st, but the swell is barely registering. Saturday afternoon sees a slight bump to 2ft from the SW, with a combined energy of 13, but it's onshore wind. It's still poor.
Sunday, August 2nd, is more of the same: 1ft, light and glassy in the morning, but just not enough push. From Monday, August 3rd, through to the end of the first week, most sessions have a wave comment of "poor surf conditions" or no swell at all. It's a full week of waiting.
The second week doesn't offer a redemption song either. The best we see is on Thursday, August 6th, with a 2ft SW swell in the afternoon and a combined energy of 27. That's the highest energy in the entire 16-day window, but it's still weak. The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is small. Friday, August 7th, gives us a glassy morning with 1.0ft, but it's just not enough to get excited about. The pattern continues into the second week with tiny pulses and onshore or cross-onshore winds.
There is a very slight increase in period around Monday, August 10th, with a 7-second swell from the WSW, but at 0.7ft to 2ft, it's still a non-event. The last few days of the outlook, from August 11th to 13th, get messy with moderate onshore winds, some rain, and even a risk of thunderstorms, but no worthwhile swell to go with it.
Honestly, for a beach and jetty setup like this, with these tiny waves and onshore winds, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. We'll have to hope the forecasts change. This is a long, blank run for the area.
Keep your eyes on the horizon, but don't hold your breath.
