The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a pretty flat outlook for our waters. We’ve got a long stretch of very small or non-existent surf ahead, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board just yet.
Looking at things from Tuesday the 15th, the surf is basically a no-show. We start with a tiny 0.3 ft SW swell with a period of just 4 seconds, and the combined wave energy is a meagre 2 – that’s barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at a warm 80°F, and with an anomaly of plus 8°, it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year. The first real flicker of life happens on the morning of Thursday the 18th. The swell bumps up to a modest 4 ft from the SW, with a 7-second period and the energy creeping up to a moderate 113. The wind is clean and cross-offshore out of the East, making conditions look pretty tidy, but the waves are still only just about surfable. Unfortunately, that’s as good as it gets. That afternoon the wind swings onshore, and we slide back into a long, flat spell.
From Friday the 19th all the way through to the end of the month on Tuesday the 30th, we are looking at a massive gap with nothing worth paddling out for. Most days show zero swell or tiny 0.3 ft dribblers from the S and SW with periods under 7 seconds. The energy levels are almost always sitting at 1 or 0. There are some glassy mornings on the 26th, 27th, and 28th, but with no swell to push, that glass is just a mirror.
So what’s the standout? There really isn’t one. The only window that even qualifies as a recommendation is the morning of Thursday the 18th at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). It’s a beginner-friendly beach and jetty spot, but it’s fairly consistent. With a 4 ft SW swell and that clean, cross-offshore wind in the morning, you might find a few small, clean waves. It’s not going to blow your mind, but if you're desperate for a paddle, that's your best bet. Just be aware it can get crowded there often.
Bottom line: we are in for a very quiet run. Don't expect much, but forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
