The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our local stretch.

Honestly, it’s a tough one. The next 16 days are lookin’ pretty flat for the most part. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. The only period that even offers a paddle is this coming Saturday morning, the 29th of August, and even then it’s a bit of a struggle. After that, we’re talking days and days of barely a ripple, all the way through to the second week of September. It’s the kind of blank run that can make a surfer wanna take up golf.

The pick of a very poor bunch is Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). This is a beginner-friendly beach and jetty set-up, fairly consistent when there’s swell, but it’s exposed to the open ocean. The water is a whopping 80° – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.

On Saturday morning, the 29th, we’ll see a weak 5 ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds. The combined energy is a modest 269, so it’s not exactly gonna light up the place. The wind is a light 3 mph from the WSW, which is onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. It’s only really surfable if you’re desperate.

By Saturday afternoon, the swell drops to 4 ft, and the wind picks up to 6 mph onshore, making it even worse. The recommendation is a flat zero.

Sunday the 30th morning is the next best shot. The swell is down to 3 ft from the SW, still short period at 6 seconds, and the energy is a weak 63. The wind is a light 3 mph from the ENE, which is a cross-offshore breeze. That’ll keep the surface clean. It’s still small and weak, but if you’ve got a longboard and zero expectations, you might find a little knee-high bump.

After that, it’s pretty much game over. From Monday the 31st right through to Sunday the 13th of September, we’re looking at waves that are mostly under 2 ft, with periods that won’t organise a thing. The combined energy is often in the single digits or low teens. We’ll see a few glassy mornings and even some offshore winds, particularly on Tuesday the 1st of September morning with a 2 ft swell from the SW and a clean 3 mph offshore from the ENE. But the swell is just too small to do anything with.

We do get a little 2 ft bump on Wednesday the 9th of September afternoon, but it’s onshore wind and poor.

So, the long and short of it is: if you really need to get wet, your best bet is the early morning of Sunday the 30th of August. The waves will be tiny, but the wind will be clean. For the rest of the 16-day window, save your energy and wait for a better forecast. The forecasts do change, and it tends not to stay this flat forever, but for now, the board stays in the car.

Rusty.
