The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, lookin’ at what we’ve got cookin’ for the next couple weeks. Honestly, for a spot like Forte dei Marmi (Pontille), this is a pretty grim run. There’s a massive gap of flat, tiny, or blown-out junk right through most of it. We’re talking days and days of nothing worth paddling for. Let’s get into it.
First off, the water is sitting at a very unusual 83°F for this time of year, a full 6°F above normal. That’s wild, like bathwater, but don’t let that fool ya – the surf is practically nonexistent for the first week. From the 23rd of August all the way through to the 29th, it’s a total write-off. We’ve got tiny 0.3ft to 2ft slop, short periods around 4-6 seconds, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore breezes. The combined swell energy is in the single or low double digits (between 1 and 33), which is basically nothing. Not even worth getting the wetsuit wet.
Now, there is a glimmer of hope, but you gotta be patient. The standout, and I mean the *only* standout in the whole 16-day window, hits on Sunday morning the 30th of August. This is the one to circle. The forecast shows a clean 7ft SW groundswell with a period of 7 seconds. Now, the period isn't super long, but that swell size is solid. It’ll be a bit much for beginners, but for the rest of us, it’s got some punch. The wind is light and offshore from the east, so it should be glassy and clean. The combined swell energy reads 646, which is strong. It’s a beach/jetty setup, so keep an eye on the banks, but with that offshore flow, it could be the best session of the outlook.
The Sunday afternoon (30th) gets a bit sketchy with a cross-onshore kicking in, so get your session in early. After that, it drops back down. Monday the 31st has a little 2ft leftover, and then we’re back to tiny, poor-quality dribble for the rest of the first week of September. There’s a hint of a 4ft groundswell on the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September with a clean offshore wind from the NE, but the combined energy is only moderate (136) and the quality is described as ordinary. It’s something, but nothing compared to that Sunday morning.
So, in short: this place is flat-lining for the vast majority of the outlook. Don’t bother checking the charts until the 30th of August. If you can get out that Sunday morning, you might score a fun, punchy wave. Everything else is a hard pass.
Rusty.
