The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming up for the Versilia coast. The long-range picture is a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of flat and poor conditions bookending a couple of very promising windows. Right now, there’s nothing to get excited about until the weekend of the 22nd.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. The sea is waking up with a solid 7ft swell from the WSW, and the wind is absolutely glassy – dead calm from the SSW. That’s a clean canvas for the morning session at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). The combined wave energy is pumping at a strong 700, so there’s plenty of push. That 7ft of swell will be a bit too much for the beginners, but for the rest of us, it’s looking promising. The water’s been running a lot warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 82° with a +6° anomaly – that’s very unusual, so you might not even need a spring suit for that dawn patrol.
The wind swings onshore in the afternoon, so make the most of that morning window. We then hit a dry patch with a few days of tiny, messy waves and flat spells from the 24th through the 28th. Not much to work with.
Hold on, because the next standout is a cracker. Saturday morning, the 29th of August, we’re looking at another 7ft pulse from the SW. Once again, the wind is glassy – dead calm from the east. The energy is huge at 731, and the waves should be clean and punchy. This is the best of the best for the whole run. That 7ft is pushing into expert territory though, so if you’re not confident, maybe sit this one out or watch from the beach.
The following week is looking quiet again, with that swell dropping off fast. Then, on Thursday the 3rd of September, we get a late burst of high-quality energy. Morning sees a 8ft swell from the SW with a 8-second period, and glassy wind from the ESE. The combined energy is a massive 978, making this the biggest pulse of the whole forecast. That’s a serious day for the experienced crew only. The afternoon gets messy with onshore wind, but that Thursday dawn session is the clear long-range highlight.
So, the play is: Saturday 22nd morning, Saturday 29th morning, and Thursday 3rd morning. The rest is mostly flat or onshore slop. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
