Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on with Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). It’s a beach-and-jetty setup, and it takes a SW swell. The water is sitting at 79°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s nearly 5° above average, so you’re getting a real bathwater feel.
Truth is, things are flat and pretty grim for the first week and a half. From Saturday 11th July right through to Monday 20th July, we’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves. The swell barely hits 1ft, the period is short (4–7 seconds), and the combined energy is next to nothing – mostly single-digit numbers like 7 or 1. That’s weak, local wind chop. It’s a beach break with onshore breezes most afternoons, so it’s not really worth a paddle. If you’re desperate, the glassy mornings on Sunday 12th and Monday 13th might give you a few knee-high bumps, but don’t expect much.
The real action kicks off on Tuesday 21st July. That morning, the swell jumps to 7ft from the SW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 770 (moderate to strong). The wind is glassy – a light ENE breeze at 3 mph. That’s clean, and the size is pushing into the intermediate range. It’s a bit on the big side for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’ll be a standout. The break is a beach/jetty, so with that period, it might be a little lumpy, but the glassy conditions will help.
The following morning, Wednesday 22nd July, is also a good shout. The swell drops to 5ft from the SW, period still 7 seconds, combined energy 295, and the wind is offshore from the NE at 6 mph. That’s clean surf. It’s a touch smaller, but the offshore wind will make for some nice, groomed lines.
Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th July mornings are also looking good with 5ft SW swell, glassy conditions, and energy around 328–345. Those are solid, clean sessions.
The standout of the whole 16-day window is absolutely Tuesday 21st July morning. That’s the biggest swell, glassy wind, and the most energy. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is the one to aim for. The crowds are often around here, so expect some company.
Rusty.
