The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for our stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a write-off. From now until the 21st of August, we’ve got a big fat zero on the cards. A few tiny, weak slops here and there but nothing worth paddling out for. The sea is basically a lake. You’ll see a few glassy mornings on the 16th and 19th, but with no swell to push, it’s just a pretty view.

Things finally start to wake up on Saturday the 22nd. The morning brings in a 5ft SW swell with 6-second period. The combined energy is moderate (223), and with a light glassy wind, it’ll be clean. But by the afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it gets messy, so get in early.

Sunday the 23rd is better. Morning session: 5ft from the WSW, period a touch longer at 7 seconds, and the energy is ramping up (447). Winds are light cross-offshore from the east, so the lineup should be clean and peeling. This is a solid pick for the weekend.

Now, the real standout is Monday the 24th. The morning brings 6ft of SW groundswell, period 8 seconds, with moderate-strong energy (418) and a clean cross-offshore breeze. That’s a really fun size for the more experienced crew. If you can handle a bit of punch, this is your window.

The afternoon of the 24th is notable too – we’ve got 8ft from the WSW at 10 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the combined energy jumps to 1511 – that’s strong. This is expert territory only. That swell is going to be powerful and a bit unruly at the beach breaks. For the more exposed spots, this might be more interesting for the kite crowd than paddle surfing.

After that, Tuesday the 25th morning still has some leftovers: 3ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, energy down to 129, but clean offshore winds make it worth a sneaky session. Then it goes quiet again until Thursday the 27th. That morning you’ll find 4ft from the WSW, period 6 seconds, energy 164, with glassy conditions – surfable but nothing to write home about.

So, to wrap it up: the first real taste is Saturday the 22nd morning. The best on offer are Sunday the 23rd morning and Monday the 24th morning. Monday afternoon is big and heavy – for the brave only.

Keep an eye on those forecasts from the 22nd onward; we’re finally getting some life back.

Rusty.
