The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about what’s happening here. I’m lookin’ at the lineup at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille), and honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a struggle. This is a beach and jetty setup, exposed to the SW, and we’re mostly starved for any real push. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The first few days – from Wednesday the 15th right through to Saturday the 18th – it’s barely a ripple. We’re talkin’ ankle-snappers at best, with swell heights around 0.7ft to 1.0ft and periods so short they’re just wind slop. The combined energy is laughable, mostly in the single digits (3 to 24). No point gettin’ wet for that.
Then Sunday the 19th morning shows a little pulse. The swell picks up to 3ft from the SW, period stretches to 7 seconds, and the energy climbs to 63 – still weak, but it’s something. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the surface is clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Not a standout, just a chance to get a few small, soft ones. The afternoon gets ruined by onshore wind.
Monday the 20th morning is a similar story – 2ft SW swell, light cross-offshore breeze, clean but small. The energy is only 34. After that, we hit a dry spell. From Tuesday the 21st all the way through to Friday the 24th afternoon, it’s basically flat. Energy drops to zero, and you’re just lookin’ at a glassy lake.
Saturday the 25th morning offers a little more – 2ft SW swell, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is still weak at 33. The afternoon gets onshore and messy.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is Sunday the 26th morning. The swell pushes to 3ft from the SW, period is 8 seconds, and the combined energy finally hits a moderate 117. It’s not a big day, but with the wind glassy calm, it’ll be the cleanest and most powerful surf in this whole 16-day window. The waves will be small but fun for a beginner or a longboard. The period is short so it’s not a groundswell, just a little bump of energy. This is the only time I’d bother paddling out.
After that, Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 30th morning, it’s back to tiny, weak dribble – 0.3ft to 1ft, energy in the single digits. Not worth the wax.
So overall, this is a pretty bleak run. There’s a gap of almost a week with no real surf from the 21st to the 24th, and then only one morning on the 26th that’s worth a mention. For a beginner, that Sunday morning is your best bet – small, clean, and glassy. For anyone else, keep your expectations on the floor.
Rusty.
