The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille).

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim, with a gap of flat or poor surf stretching from now all the way through the first week of September. There’s really nothing to get excited about until we get deeper into the second week.

The first real pulse of energy shows up on Saturday, the 30th of August. We’ve got a bit of a morning session with a 4ft swell from the SW, period around 7 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is weak (97), so it’s not going to be powerful, but it’s clean. The afternoon actually gets glassy with a WSW breeze at 3 mph, but the swell drops to 3ft and the energy is almost nothing (43). It’s surfable, but ordinary.

Then we hit a dry spell. From Sunday the 31st all the way through to the 7th of September, it’s mostly flat or tiny, with poor conditions. A few mornings have a glassy look, but the swell is basically zero – 1.0ft or less. Not worth paddling out for.

Now, the one thing that might get your attention is Wednesday, the 9th of September. The morning shows a solid 8ft swell from the WSW, period 8 seconds, and a light onshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 1141 – that’s strong. But this is a beach/jetty setup, and 8ft with a short period and onshore wind is going to be a mess. This is more for the kite surfers, honestly. The afternoon gets even worse with 16 mph onshore wind. The rating is marginal at best, and it’s going to be a beast for most.

The best bet in this whole outlook? It’s a tough call, but I’d say the glassy Sunday afternoon on the 30th of August. You’ll have clean, tiny waves at 3ft from the SW with no wind. It’s not a standout in size, but it’s the only time you’ll get a truly clean, glassy window. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.

After that, Thursday the 10th of September morning cleans up with a 3ft SW swell and a light offshore from the NNE (85 energy), but it’s ordinary. The real size is all on the 9th, but the quality is poor.

Water temp is 81°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual for the Mediterranean.

So, to sum it up: the next 10 days are mostly flat, save for a tiny window on the 30th. The only real size comes on the 9th of September, but it’s wind-affected and messy. Keep your expectations low for now.

Rusty.
