The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a bit of a flat spell for the stretch of coast around Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). We're looking at a real dry spell for the first week and a half. There's a long gap here with no real surf to speak of—just tiny, hopeless bumps from the 17th right through to the 30th of July. The swell energy is barely registering, often less than 10 (combined energy), and the odd 1ft wave is just not going to get you out of bed.
We finally see a pulse of energy arrive on the afternoon of Friday the 31st of July. The swell bumps up to a solid 7ft from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds. That's a bit of a short-period windswell, but the energy number jumps to 812 (moderate wave energy), which is the only real event in the whole forecast. The downside? The wind is onshore from the SW at 6 mph, which will mess up the surface. This is a beach/jetty setup, and with that size and onshore wind, it's probably going to be a bit of a washing machine. Honestly, for a beach break, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfing.
Then on Saturday the 1st of August, we wake up to a cleaner picture. The swell drops to 3ft from the SW, with a 7-second period, and the energy is back down to 85 (weak wave energy). The wind is light offshore from the ENE at 3 mph, which is a major positive. That morning session will be clean, but the waves will be small and weak. It's surfable, but nothing to rave about.
So, if you're desperate for a paddle, the best option is the morning of Saturday the 1st of August. It's not a standout by any means, but it's the cleanest wave in the window. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no worries there. Just keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
