The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille).

Honestly, the next week and a bit is a real struggle. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly cross-onshore or onshore winds, so you’re looking at flat, choppy, or just plain messy conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 84°F with an anomaly of 7°F warmer than normal, which is very unusual for this time of year – it’s like bath water out there, but sadly not much to ride. The combined energy is basically zero (1) for most of the early days, so don’t even bother paddling out until the 17th of August when we finally see a tiny knee-high wave, but it’s still poor.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on the 18th of August. Tuesday morning sees a 4ft swell from the SW with a period of 7 seconds, and clean offshore winds from the NNE. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 112, and while the period is short, the conditions are finally surfable. It’s not a standout, but it’s a start.

Now, the real standout is a few days later. On Saturday the 22nd of August, the morning looks promising. We’ve got a 6ft SW swell with a 7-second period, and a clean offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is strong at 495, and the forecast suggests good surf conditions. This is the best we’ve seen, and it’s worth a look. The break is a beach/jetty setup, so it’s exposed to SW swell, and crowds are often here, so expect some company.

Then, Sunday the 23rd of August morning is the absolute highlight. The swell picks up to 7ft from the WSW with an 8-second period, and we have a clean cross-offshore breeze from the E. The combined energy is very strong at 744, and the forecast is for very good surf conditions. This is the session to target. The water is still warm, but at this size, it’s more for experienced surfers – 7ft is solid and will have some punch. The short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly, but with clean conditions, it’ll be fun.

After that, it drops off quickly again, with nothing much to report for the rest of the 16-day window. The swell fades to tiny, and the winds get messy or onshore, so the 22nd and 23rd are your window.

So, if you’re hanging out for a wave, pencil in the 22nd and 23rd of August. The Sunday morning is the pick of the bunch.

Rusty.
