The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee. It’s a lean stretch ahead for a while. For the next week and a bit, the surf is pretty much flat or so weak it’s not worth getting wet for.
The best we’ve got on the entire 16-day run is a very specific window that shows some promise but you’ve got to wait it out. From now, through to the end of the month, it’s a long gap of small, poor surf with hardly any energy. Most days are showing flat, weak swells with combined energy values well under 100, often just single digits – that’s barely a ripple. The water temperature is sitting about average for the time of year here at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille).
Then we start to see a bit of a pulse. On Monday 27th July morning, the swell picks up a touch to 3 ft from the SSW with a period of 7 seconds, and combined energy reaches 74. The wind is off from the NE at 6 mph, making it clean. Still, it’s only a 1 out of 10, so it’s ordinary but there’s a hint of life.
The one true standout is Sunday 2nd August. That morning is the call. The swell is due to push in at 5 ft from the SW, period 7 seconds, with the combined energy jumping into the moderate range at 280. The wind is light off from the ENE at just 3 mph, so it’ll be clean. That is the best wave of the run, hands down. It’s a long way off, so treat it as promising but not locked in, and it’s manageable for intermediate surfers. On a beach/jetty setup, that offshore breeze will be the key. Crowds are often here, so expect some company. That’s your target. Get it while it lasts.
Before that, Wednesday 29th July morning sees a 4 ft SW groundswell with a 7 second period and offshore, glassy conditions. Combined energy is 117, so it’s on the lower end of moderate, but worth a look if you can’t wait, just don’t expect world-class. The rest is a write-off.
Rusty.
