The Lowdown

Gutted, folks. I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks and, honestly, it’s a bleak picture for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). We’re looking at a run of flat, dribbly days that’ll have you checking your leash for dry rot more than anything else. The swell energy is just pathetic – barely registering a pulse, with combined energy values sitting at 5 at best, and mostly 1 or 2. It’s weak, it’s small, and it’s not coming from anywhere good. You’d have more luck finding a wave in a paddling pool.

The only real blip on the radar is Saturday morning the 12th. There’s a tiny 1ft of south-west swell, but the period is a short, crumbly 5 seconds. It’s not going to have any push. The saving grace is the clean, off-shore north-easterly breeze at 3 mph, which will keep the surface glassy. But let’s be real, 1ft at 5 seconds is barely a ripple. It’s a pop-up-and-descend kind of wave. You’d be surfing for the sake of it, not for the ride.

After that, it’s a complete drought. From Saturday afternoon onwards, through Sunday and into the entire following week, we’re talking nothing but scraps of swell under 0.5ft, if that. The energy reads like a flatline, and the periods are all over the shop, but it doesn’t matter because there’s no size to push them. The winds are light, and there are some glassy, off-shore conditions, particularly on the Monday morning the 14th and Wednesday morning the 16th, but the ocean will be as smooth as a lake. The water is about average for this time of year, so the only thing you’ll be feeling is the cool air, not the stoke.

This blank run is pretty standard for this stretch of coast. We’ve got a few days of cross-offshore winds around the 17th and 18th, but again, it’s accompanying that same tiny westerly slop. Then, from the 21st, we finally get some proper off-shore winds, with that north-easterly blowing at 6-9 mph on the 22nd. But the ocean is a total flat calm. Zero. Nothing. The swell window is slammed shut.

So, what does this mean for you? Honestly, the whole 16-day window is a washout. There are no standouts, no hidden gems. It’s a long gap with no recommendations, and if you’re desperate to get wet, the only real option is to wait for that Saturday morning, maybe even a quick paddle on the longboard on the glassiest days just to keep the feel for it. But for actual surfing? Don’t hold your breath. The only thing that looks exciting is the wind, and with the beach setup and these conditions, you’d be better off rigging up a kite than grabbing a shortboard. Forecasts can change, but this one’s looking stubborn.

Stay patient, keep the wax dry, and maybe take up fishing.

Rusty.
