The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the opening week is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, tiny, or messy conditions from now until the end of August. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Saturday, the 29th of August, and even then it’s a marginal call. The water is a balmy 83°F at the start, which is much warmer than you’d expect for this time of year – about 6°F above normal, so that’s a real standout.
The only spot in the frame is Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). It’s a beach and jetty setup, exposed to the SW.
Saturday, 22 August – There’s a bit of swell in the water, 7ft from the WSW with a short period of 8 seconds, but the wind is onshore from the WSW at 6 mph. The combined energy sits at 763 which is moderate, but the onshore breeze and short period make for poor surf. By afternoon the swell drops to 5ft, but the wind picks up to 9 mph onshore. Not one for the board.
Sunday, 23 August – The swell drops right off to 2ft with a 6-second period. The morning has a light offshore breeze from the ENE at 3 mph, which cleans things up, but there’s just no energy. The combined energy is a weak 20. Afternoon is even smaller.
Monday, 24 August – Flat. 0.3ft and glassy in the morning, but nothing to ride. This pattern of tiny, weak surf continues right through the week.
Saturday, 29 August – Finally, a pulse. The morning shows 5ft from the WSW with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is 283 – moderate. The wind is light onshore from the SW at 3 mph, but the wave comment flags it as marginal. The afternoon drops to 4ft with a cross-onshore breeze at 9 mph, making it choppy.
Sunday, 30 August – This is your best bet for the whole outlook. The morning brings 4ft of SW swell, still a short 7-second period, but the wind is light and glassy from the E at 3 mph. The combined energy is 176. It’s not big, it’s not long-period, but it’s the cleanest surf we’ll see. The waves will be small and a bit weak, but for a beginner-friendly spot, it’s a sessionable morning. The wind goes onshore by the afternoon.
Monday, 31 August – Back to tiny. 2ft from the SW, glassy morning, but barely a ripple.
The second week is a desert. From 1 September right through to the end of the forecast on 6 September, the swell is tiny – 2ft or less – with poor wind and almost no energy. The only spike is on Sunday, 6 September, when we see 4ft to 4ft from the SW/W, but the wind is a strong onshore breeze at 12 to 16 mph, with combined energy hitting 209. That’s a messy, blown-out mess – more interesting for kite-surfing than paddling.
So, the standout is Sunday morning, 30 August, at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). It’s not the biggest swell, but with glassy conditions and a small, surfable wave, it’s the only clean window in the whole 16 days. The rest is a long, flat gap.
Rusty.
