The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s looking flat out. We’ve got a long stretch of next to nothing, with the first real pulse of energy not even a blip on the radar until the end of the forecast period. For the next ten days or so, don’t bother checking the buoys – the swell just isn’t there.
The best bet – and I use that term loosely – comes on the morning of Thursday the 17th of September. The wind will be glassy early at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). The swell direction is from the SW, but we’re only looking at a tiny 1ft of swell with a short period of 4 seconds. The combined energy is weak, coming in at just 5. The water temperature is a balmy 81°F, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll be a nice warm paddle. But honestly, the surf quality is poor. It’s really more of a splash around on a longboard than anything with a proper face.
Things get a little more interesting on Friday the 18th of September. The morning session at the same break (Forte dei Marmi (Pontille)) looks slightly better. The wind is glassy again, with the swell nudging up to 2ft from the SW, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is still low, at 25, but it’s the most we’ll see all week. Still, we’re talking small, weak waves. Not a standout by any measure.
After that, it dries up again. There’s a tiny bump on the morning of Wednesday the 23rd of September – 0.3ft from the SW with a 4-second period – but that’s not worth getting out of bed for.
Honestly, there’s nothing in this forecast that gets my heart pumping. We’ve got a long gap of flat, clean conditions. It’s one of those periods where the ocean just takes a nap. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a good time to wax your board, fix that ding, and wait.
