Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, small, or just plain messy conditions ahead.
Right now, the action is almost non-existent. From Thursday the 10th right through to the morning of Wednesday the 16th, it’s a write-off. We’re looking at swell heights barely registering, mostly 0ft to 0.7ft, with the wind doing us no favours at all. The combined wave energy is laughable, stuck in single digits (29, 30, 11, even a 3). It’s not surf, it’s a lake.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean a glimmer, comes on Thursday the 17th. Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) might see a pulse of 3ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy will be a modest 104 – still weak, but at least it’s a number with three digits. The real kicker here is the wind: Thursday morning is glassy from the NE at 3 mph. That’s the cleanest we’ll see it this whole forecast. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and the water temp is about average for the time of year, so no shock there. But don’t get excited – the afternoon onshore wind stuffs it up.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. Saturday the 19th through Tuesday the 22nd offer nothing but flat spells and tiny, wind-affected dribble. The morning of Monday the 21st sees a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW with a 9-second period, and clean offshore NE wind at 6 mph, giving a combined energy of 51. It’s surfable, but only just. The afternoon on the same day brings a bigger 3ft swell from the same direction, but with onshore wind, the quality drops to zero.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, Thursday the 17th morning is your only real window, and even then, it’s a marginal prospect. The rest of the 16 days is a blank run – it’s a tough time of year for this area.
Rusty.
