The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough start. The first week is pretty much a write-off for any proper surfing. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with hardly any energy. From Wednesday the 2nd right through to Tuesday the 8th, the swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft and with a shocking 4-second period. The combined energy is barely a whisper (1 to 4). There’s nothing to ride here. The water is a steamy 80.6° which is way warmer than usual for this time of year, but that doesn’t help the waves.
Things finally start to look a little more interesting on Wednesday the 9th. The swell picks up to 4.6 ft from the SW, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 211 (moderate). The morning looks best for a look at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). The wind is light and cross-shore from the SE, which isn't perfect but it's rideable. The afternoon gets messy with a stronger SSW wind, so get out early. It’s still a bit marginal, but it’s the first real pulse we’ve seen.
Then Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th mornings are your best bet for the whole outlook. The swell drops a touch to 3.6 ft from the SW, but the period stretches to 8 seconds. The real winner here is the wind: a light offshore from the NE on Thursday morning, and a light offshore from the ENE on Friday morning. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The combined energy hits 158 and 147 respectively, so there’s some push. The waves will be surfable and clean, but nothing epic. It’s a beach/jetty setup, so expect a bit of a shuffle for waves.
After that, it all fades away again. The swell drops to 2.3 ft by Friday afternoon and then fizzles out to nothing for the second week. From Saturday the 12th all the way to Thursday the 17th, it’s back to flatness with energy readings of 0 to 3. Not a single wave to chase.
So, the standout? It’s gotta be Thursday morning the 10th at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). That 3.6 ft of SW swell with the 8-second period and clean offshore NE wind at 6 mph is the best we’ve got. Friday morning the 11th is a close second, but the swell is a little smaller. Both are a solid choice for a beginner-friendly wave, but don’t expect anything too powerful.
Stay stoked, but maybe keep the board in the car for the rest of the week.
