The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here. It’s going to be a tough stretch of surf for us. I'm looking at Forte dei Marmi (Pontille) and the charts are about as flat as they come. We’ve got a long, drawn-out period of ankle-biters and flat calm ahead.
First thing you’ll notice is the water. It’s a crazy 82°F, which is a solid 8°F warmer than it should be this time of year. That is very unusual. It's going to feel like a warm bath, but that’s about all we’re going to get.
The first few days are a total loss. Saturday the 5th is pushing a miserable 1ft with a weak 5-second period and a light onshore breeze. The energy is just pitiful (5). Sunday the 6th is glassy in the morning, which is nice, but we’re still looking at a 1ft, short-period swell. It will look clean, but there's nothing to push you around.
Then, we just go flat. The energy drops to zero from the 8th to the 9th. Nothing. The 10th brings some rain and a little cross-shore wind, but the surf remains poor and small. The energy does bump to (8), but it’s attached to a 4-second period, which is just wind chop. Forget it.
Mark your calendar for Monday the 14th. We finally get a blip of energy, with a reading of (21), which is the most we'll see in this whole period. The morning is still small, around 1ft, but the afternoon lifts to about 2ft from the SW with a 7-second period. The wind is light offshore, so it should be a bit cleaner. It’s not going to be breaking your neck, but if you’re desperate, this is the one session to try and get.
And that’s it. It fades right back out. The 15th is back to under 0.5ft, and then from the 16th to the 20th, the energy readings are all zeros. A full week-plus of flatness. Sea glass and nothing else.
So, for the next 16 days, we are looking at a whole lot of nothing. This sort of blank run isn't unusual for the area, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. Forecasts are always subject to change, but as it stands, you're better off finding something else to do.
The only standout is that ridiculously warm water. Maybe just go for a swim.
Rusty.
