The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the next 16 days for Forte dei Marmi (Pontille). The whole forecast is a flat spell, with only a tiny blip of surfable energy right at the start.
The pattern is clear: we’ve got a pulse of very weak swell arriving on Monday the 27th of July, but it’s short-lived. After that, the ocean basically shuts down for the rest of the outlook. The best chance to get wet is Monday morning, but even then, it’s not going to get your heart racing.
Monday morning, July 27 is the only real window. There’s a weak 3ft SW swell sneaking in, but with a short period of just 7 seconds, it’s lacking any punch. The combined wave energy is a paltry 108 (moderate), so it’s weak. The one saving grace is the wind: dead calm, glassy conditions from the east at 3 mph. That means the surface will be clean as a whistle. The water is a warm 83°, and that’s a massive 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – incredibly unusual, so you won’t need a wetsuit. For a beginner, those tiny, clean waves at the beach/jetty setup might be okay for a paddle, but for anyone else, it’s a real struggle. The point break potential here is zero with that short period.
Monday afternoon the wind swings to the WSW at 6 mph, turning cross-on and making it messy. The swell drops to 3ft and the energy halves to 56. It’s poor, and I’d be out of the water.
The rest of the week, from Tuesday, July 28 right through to the end of the forecast on Tuesday, August 11, is a bust. The swell heights tumble below 2ft, the periods are short, and the combined energy never gets above 20. We’re talking waves that are flat, barely a ripple. There’s a long gap of almost two weeks where the surf is essentially non-existent. While the mornings often have that glassy calm, the swell just isn’t there. Even the offshore winds on the morning of August 3rd can’t make a 1ft, 4-second swell work. It’s just not worth the drive.
For this stretch, the beach setup here is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer – there’s just no wave energy to work with. Given the break is fairly consistent in general, this is a rough patch, but forecasts can turn. For now, keep the board in the car and wait for the next proper swell.
Rusty.
