Espinho Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Espinho over the next couple of weeks.

Right now, the surf is pretty flat and junk. The wave energy is weak, sitting at 91 (moderate energy) on Tuesday the 25th, but don’t get excited – it’s a small, short-period 3ft windswell from the west with a choppy cross-onshore breeze. That’s a no-go. We’ve got a real dry spell from Tuesday through Thursday the 27th, with poor conditions and only marginal hopes. The swell on the 27th picks up a bit, to 5ft that morning (moderate energy of 256), but the wind is still messy. You’d be better off waiting.

Now, hold on to your board because Friday the 28th is the big standout. That morning at Espinho is going to be absolute magic. We’ve got a proper 7ft groundswell from the WNW with a long period of 11 seconds, pumping combined energy of 899 (moderate to strong energy). But the real kicker? It’s glassy – dead flat, offshore light airs from the SSE. That’s as clean as it gets. The water temp is average for this time of year, so just a spring suit should do. This is the session to mark. By afternoon the wind swings NW and it gets choppy, so get in early.

Saturday the 29th is still surfable with a clean 4ft NW swell in the morning (energy 158), but the energy drops. Sunday the 30th is a repeat – clean but small, 3ft glassy waves. Monday the 31st gets more size at 5ft from the NW with a 9-second period and moderate energy (340), but a cross-shore wind will leave some chop. Tuesday the 1st of September shows a little more promise with a 5ft NW groundswell and a longer 11-second period (energy 558), but again that cross-shore wind keeps it from being perfect.

Then there’s a long, mediocre stretch. From the 2nd through the 6th, it’s mostly poor to marginal. Wave heights bounce around 2ft to 5ft, but the winds are mostly onshore or strong, and the energy stays moderate. Not worth a paddle.

But then, look at the 7th of September – Monday morning. This is another potential gem. The combined swell energy jumps to 1338 (strong) with a 4ft swell from the west, but here’s the wild part: the period is 21 seconds. That’s an incredibly long groundswell. The wind is light and cross-shore. These long-period swells can be tricky at a beach/jetty break like Espinho – they tend to stand up and close out, so this could be more for the experienced crew. Still, the energy and potential for a clean wall is there. The morning of the 8th of September, Tuesday, delivers a massive 10ft swell from the WNW with a 14-second period and 3649 energy. That’s a seriously heavy, powerful swell. The wind is glassy in the morning, but the wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s expert territory only, and even then, it might be a washing machine. This one is not for the faint of heart.

Overall, the two true standouts are the morning of Friday the 28th of August for the best all-around conditions, and the morning of Monday the 7th of September for the powerful, long-period groundswell potential, but that one is for experts only. Be patient.
