The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
The outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a point break called Cowrie Beach on the radar. It’s an inconsistent wave, so you have to pick your moments. The swell energy is going to be all over the place, from a weak 479 to a massive 9703, so we’ll see some serious power at times.
The first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 6th has a bumpy 7ft SW swell at 14 seconds, but that cross-on wind is ruining it. The water temp is sitting at 57°F which is pretty normal for this time of year, so nothing weird there. Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th are also messy or just questionable. Wednesday the 9th and Thursday the 10th are a straight-up no-go; we’re looking at huge 12ft SW swell, but the wind is howling and the conditions are just poor. That’s a lot of energy (9703) going to waste. Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th morning are still marginal.
Now, the first real standout is Saturday the 12th afternoon. The wind goes light offshore from the SE, which is a major positive. The swell still has some size at 6ft from the SW, but with a period of 15 seconds, it’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is 1393, which is moderate. It’s going to be clean, and that’s when the wave will line up best. Crowds are possible here, so get in the water early.
Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th are back to poor conditions. Tuesday the 15th sees another massive swell of 12ft, but it’s just too big for this break and the wind is messy. Keep an eye on the 17th of September. Thursday morning is looking clean with a cross-offshore breeze, and a 10ft SW swell. The period is only 9 seconds, so it’s a bit short period, but the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. Thursday afternoon is even better, with a light breeze and a 8ft SW swell, also clean. That’s your second standout – a real window of quality.
The final days of the 18th and 19th fall apart again with strong winds, and the 20th and 21st are only marginal, though the 21st afternoon shows a glimmer of hope with clean conditions.
Stay on it, and don’t sleep on that Saturday afternoon session.
