The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is looking like a flat spell for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing to start, with the first real surf recommendations not showing up until deep into the second week. The waves are just too tiny and weak to get excited about. Let’s walk through it.

Right now, through the first week and a half, it’s pretty much a write-off. You’ll see a few ripples here and there, like a 0.3m SE swell with a period of 2 seconds on the 9th of September afternoon, or a 0.4m SW swell on the 12th, but the combined energy is barely a whisper (1 to 4). The wind is mostly light and variable, sometimes glassy, but there’s just no push. It’s frustrating, I know.

The outlook starts to perk up a little around the 16th of September. On Wednesday morning, we get a tiny 0.4m ESE swell with a 3-second period from a clean offshore breeze, but it’s still too weak to ride. The afternoon brings a 0.6m SE swell, period 4 seconds. The energy is starting to show (12), but it’s still classed as poor.

Then, on the 17th of September, Thursday morning is our first real standout. At Cala Cipolla, we see a 0.8m SE swell with a 5-second period and glassy conditions. The water is about average for this time of year. The combined energy reaches 35 – still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. It’s tiny, clean, and might offer a few small crumbly waves for a longboard or a foamie. The wind is glass, so it’ll be as smooth as it gets. Be aware this spot is inconsistent and for advanced surfers only, so don’t expect a crowd-pleaser, though crowds are possible here.

The weekend after that, from the 18th to the 21st of September, keeps a similar theme. Small swells from the ESE and SE, mostly between 0.5m and 0.9m, with periods of 3 to 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 43 on the 19th afternoon, but the wind shifts cross or cross-on, chopping up what little shape there is. Nothing comes together to make a proper session.

Bottom line: If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 17th of September morning is your best bet, but keep your expectations on the floor. This is a long, quiet stretch for the area. It tends not to stay this poor forever, so keep an eye on the forecasts.

Rusty.
