The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk Cable Beach (Broome) for the next couple of weeks. I’ll cut to the chase – it’s a quiet run, so don’t get your hopes up too high.

We’ve got a 16-day window starting now, but there’s a big gap before anything worth mentioning shows up. The first real recommendation is a long way off, so we’re looking at a solid week or more of almost nothing. The water is sitting at 79°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

For the first few days, it’s all tiny dribble. Sunday the 13th kicks off with a tiny 0.7ft west swell, but it’s onshore and the energy is weak (39). Monday and Tuesday are more of the same – flat to 2ft if you’re lucky, but the wind is on it. There’s a brief moment Wednesday morning the 16th with glassy conditions and a 2ft west swell, but the energy is still low (20). Thursday the 17th morning gives us a fresh offshore easterly at 19 mph cleaning up a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW, but at 6 seconds period it’s just not doing anything. Friday the 18th morning is glassy but the swell is down to 0.3ft – you could almost call it a lake.

Honestly, it’s not until we get into the tail end of the period that we see the only real standout, and even that’s a stretch. Cable Beach itself rarely breaks, so this flat run isn’t a huge shock for the area. The best chance for a paddle comes on Thursday the 17th morning when that offshore easterly is blowing at 19 mph, cleaning up the 1ft WSW swell. It’s tiny, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see. For the rest of it, the onshore westerlies just won’t let up, and the swell stays below 2ft. Energy never gets out of the weak range, topping out at 51 on the Sunday afternoon.

If you’re a beginner, nothing here gets over 5ft, so it’s safe, but there’s nothing to ride. The long period swells that pop up – like the 17-second groundswell on the 13th – are wasted with onshore wind and tiny size. This setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the persistent onshore breeze and minimal waves.

So, bottom line: a long, flat stretch with only a glimmer of clean but tiny surf on the 17th morning. That’s your best bet, but it’s not exactly firing. Hang tight, forecasts can change.

Rusty.
