Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Caballeros over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, there’s a bit of a wait for any real quality. The surf kicks in Sunday morning the 5th, but conditions are marginal with a light cross-onshore breeze and the water is a wild 4° warmer than average – 70°F — so it’s way warmer than usual for this time of year. The swell’s coming out of the SW at 4ft with a long 20-second period, and there’s strong wave energy (1624). That long period means clean lines, but at a reef break like Caballeros (advanced only) it should handle it well, though the swell direction is SSW-optimum and we’re getting SW, so it’s not perfect. Crowds can show up here sometimes.
Sunday afternoon stays similar – 5ft SW swell, 19-second period, still that cross-on wind. Still marginal.
Monday the 6th sees the swell push up to 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period and energy around 2031. That’s a solid, powerful groundswell, but the wind stays light onshore. It’s too big for beginners at 6ft, but for advanced surfers there’s plenty of push. The morning has offshore wind, which is a major positive for clean faces. This is one of the better windows, but conditions are still called marginal.
From Tuesday the 7th through Friday the 10th, the swell hangs around 5ft to 6ft, period dropping from 16s to 14s, energy moderate to strong, but wind stays mostly cross-onshore. No standout cleanliness. The Saturday the 11th drops to 3ft with a 15-second period – energy drops too (565). Things get smaller and less exciting.
The next real highlight comes Tuesday the 14th. Morning brings 3ft from the SW with a long 17-second period and strong energy (1126). The afternoon pushes 4ft SW, 16 seconds, even more energy (1219). Wind is still cross-onshore but light – acceptable, not glassy. For an advanced reef that likes SSW optimum, the SW direction is close enough. That afternoon window looks like the best bet of the whole run.
Wednesday the 15th holds 5-5ft SW swell, but the wind picks up to a gentle breeze and it gets choppier, so less appealing.
From Thursday the 16th onward, the swell fades. Heights drop under 4ft, period shortens to 12-14 seconds, energy weakens, and by Saturday the 18th it’s 3-4ft with poor conditions. By Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, the surf turns poor – 2ft to 3ft, weak energy, choppy – not worth paddling out.
So overall, the standout is Tuesday the 14th afternoon at Caballeros – that 4ft SW groundswell with 16 seconds, decent energy, and light cross-onshore that keeps it rideable. The first week has size but never truly gets clean. After the 14th, it’s a slow fade into flatness.
That’s the story. Keep your eyes on that Tuesday window.
Rusty.
