The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it.
First off, I have to be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak, or just plain messy conditions. The water is sitting at 71°F right now, which is a solid 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s something to note when you’re suiting up.
The first real chance for a surf doesn’t show up until the end of the first week. The entire stretch from Saturday, August 22nd right through to the morning of Thursday, August 27th is a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is all over the place, and the energy is just pathetic. You’re looking at a full 5 days of nothing worth paddling for.
The first sign of life comes on Thursday, August 27th afternoon, but it’s barely a pulse. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s weak and disorganized. The combined energy is only 55, which is just a whisper. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it won’t be clean, but it’s at least something to bob around in.
The next few days are a mix of small, onshore junk. Nothing to get excited about. Then, on Saturday, August 29th afternoon, we get a bit of a bump. The swell jumps to 7ft from the W, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 345, which is a solid moderate push. But here’s the catch – the wind is swinging WNW at 30 km/h, straight onshore, making it messy and lumpy. At 7ft, this is pushing into expert territory, and with the wind tearing it up, it’s going to be a battle. This is the kind of day that looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
Monday, August 31st afternoon serves up another spike: 6ft from the W, period 7 seconds, energy of 251. But again, the wind is howling from the W at 40 km/h, a strong onshore that will turn the ocean into a washing machine. This is messy, dangerous, and not for the faint of heart.
After that, the swell drops off again. The rest of the forecast into the first week of September is tiny, weak, and mostly flat. The wind cleans up on a few mornings, like Thursday, September 3rd, with a gentle offshore, but there’s almost no swell to work with. The energy values are all in the single digits or low double digits.
So, what’s the best of a bad lot? Honestly, there’s no true standout. If I had to pick one, I’d say the Thursday, August 27th afternoon session is the most surfable for a beginner or intermediate, simply because the swell is manageable and the wind is light, even if it’s not perfect. The Saturday, August 29th and Monday, August 31st swells have the most power, but the wind ruins them for anyone who isn’t an expert. It’s a blank run, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change.
