The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at a pretty bleak stretch ahead. The finder shows zero recommendations across the entire 16-day window, so we’re staring down the barrel of a long, quiet spell. Every single entry is rated as "poor surf conditions", so don’t be holding your breath for any decent waves. This kind of blank run isn’t totally unusual for this area, but it’s still a tough one to swallow.
The only wave on the menu is at Blokken, and the outlook is grim. Water temps are sitting at 70°, which is a massive 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a proper anomaly, and it feels weird paddling out in water that warm.
The first week is a write-off. From Tuesday 14th July right through the weekend, you’re looking at tiny, weak swell, mostly from the north and NNW, with heights bouncing between 0.7 ft and 5 ft. The period is short, 4 to 7 seconds, so it’s disorganised junk. The wind is a constant problem – cross-on and cross-off breezes, mostly fresh, making the surface lumpy and choppy. You’ll see a little bump in the combined energy around Friday 17th and Saturday 18th, hitting 122 and 172, but that’s just moderate energy at best, and it’s all blown out by strong onshore winds. The swell direction is NNW, which is the optimum for Blokken, but with those winds, it doesn’t matter a bit.
The second week isn’t any better. Monday 20th July through to the end of the month, the swell disappears. We’re talking 0.7 ft to 3 ft waves, mostly from the north or shifting to the west-southwest, with periods of 3 to 6 seconds. Combined energy drops to single digits most days. The wind won’t let up – fresh onshore breezes from the north keep the surface messy. There’s a couple of mornings on the 27th and 28th July where an easterly or east-southeast breeze comes in light and cross-off, giving a clean surface, but the swell is barely a ripple at 2 ft and 3 ft, so it’s not worth the paddle.
The standout moment – if you can call it that – is a poor one. There’s no true winner here. The closest thing to a "best" option would be the late morning of Monday 27th July, with a 2 ft WSW swell, a 5-second period, and a light 6 mph cross-off wind from the east. The surface will be clean, but the waves are tiny. For a beginner, it’s maybe a longboard session, but it’s not a surf worth chasing.
Bottom line: there’s nothing to get excited about. No standouts, no real swell, and the wind is a constant headache. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe the 27th or 28th July mornings offer a clean, flat, glassy lake, but it’s not a surf. If the wind stays strong and the waves stay small, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Rusty.
