The Lowdown

Alright, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a rough one. We’ve got a full 16 days stretching out from the start of August, and the options are real slim. The only spot on the radar is Bird Lookout, and for the whole run, every single session is scored as “poor surf conditions.” There’s no good surf on offer here for the entire forecast period.

The trouble is, the wind is relentless. It’s blowing from the east, day after day, as a cross or cross-onshore breeze, and it’s rarely dropping below a moderate breeze. On the 2nd of August, we start with a clear Sunday afternoon, but the wind is 19 mph cross-shore, lumping up the 5 ft east swell. The water’s at 83°, which is about average for the time of year, so that’s no comfort.

The swell hangs around all week, never really getting above 5 ft, but it’s short-period stuff – mostly 6 to 8 seconds – and the combined energy is weak to moderate, with values like 58 to 223. It’s all windswell, not groundswell, so there’s no power or shape to it. The conditions are choppy, lumpy, and just plain messy.

We’d be looking at a gap of surf from the 2nd all the way through to the 17th of August with no recommendations. That’s a blank run. Bird Lookout is fairly consistent, but when the wind is this stubborn and the swell is this poor, it doesn’t matter. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.

If you’re desperate, the best of a bad bunch might be the 14th of August, when the swell bumps up to 5 ft to 5 ft, and the period finally hits 8 seconds. But it’s still cross-shore wind at 19–22 mph, and the energy is only moderate (259–294). It’s still going to be lumpy and ugly. Not a stand-out, just a less-bad day.

Bottom line: there’s nothing to get excited about. The forecasts can change, but for now, I’d leave the boards at home and wait for a better window.
