The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk straight about Batts Rock.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim outlook for the next 16 days. Not much happening at all. The break is inconsistent at the best of times, and this stretch is a real test of patience. You’re looking at a big gap with zero surf on offer from the start right through until the 20th of August. That’s nearly three days of flat, poor conditions. Then it’s a lot of frustration, with tiny, weak pulses that barely register. The water’s sitting at 84° – about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
Things stay poor. The first hint of a wave comes on Thursday morning, 20th of August, with a tiny north-northwest swell at 0.7 ft, but the period is short at 8 seconds. Combined energy is just 5 – weak. Wind is howling offshore from the east-northeast at 22 mph, but that’s a fresh breeze, so the surface will be clean but bumpy. Not something to get excited about.
Friday the 21st sees a slight improvement – a 1 ft north swell with an 8 second period in the morning. Energy is still weak at 10. The wind is more manageable, a moderate breeze from the east-northeast at 12 mph, keeping it clean. But it’s still ankle-snappers at best. Afternoon drops back to 0.7 ft.
There’s a bit of a lull again through Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August – near flat. A tiny 0.3 ft north-northwest swell with a longer 12-second period creeps in on Wednesday 26th August, but energy is a pitiful 3. The long period from the north is almost right for the optimum direction here (north), but there’s simply no size.
Into the end of August and the first day of September, it’s the same story – 0.7 ft to 1 ft north swells, short to moderate periods (6-10 seconds), and energy never cracking 10. Winds stay offshore or cross-offshore, so it’s clean but the ocean is basically flat. The best you can hope for is a rare, tiny little runner on the point on Friday 28th or Sunday 30th August, but it’s barely rideable. This is not a stretch for paddle surfing. Honestly, with the consistent, clean offshore wind and tiny swell, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than anything else.
So, no standout. No true good surf. A blank run like this is more normal for this area when the consistency is poor. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
