The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch here at Batts Rock. The water temperature is sitting at 84°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The overall pattern is this: for the rest of August and into early September, we’ve got very little – if any – real surf to get excited about. The swell is tiny, mostly just 0.3ft to 1.0ft from the north, with periods mostly under 12 seconds. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting at single-digit values (like 5, 10, 2) for most of the first week – that’s barely enough to rock a buoy. The winds are mostly offshore from the east and east-northeast, which would make for clean conditions, but with no swell to push, it’s not going to matter.
From Thursday 20 August through to Sunday 24 August, the swell is almost non-existent, with heights maxing out at 1.0ft. The energy is minimal, and the commentary says “poor surf conditions” for every single session. From Monday 24 August into the end of the month, there are several days where the swell height is a flat dash – literally zero energy. That’s a real blank run.
The break itself is a point, inconsistent, and fairly exposed to the north. It’s a spot that needs a proper north swell to fire, but we just don’t have one in the forecast. There’s a tiny pulse of 14-second period swell on Sunday 30 August, but it’s only 0.3ft – that’s not going to do anything. The energy is still weak (4 on the morning, 12 in the afternoon).
On Friday 4 September, there’s a hint of 0.7ft north swell with a 12-second period and moderate energy (12), but again, it’s too small to get excited about. The winds are offshore, so it’ll be clean, but you’ll be waiting a long time for a wave.
Because the swell is so small and the break is a point, I wouldn’t even call it a kite-surfing day – the wind is there, but the swell just isn’t. Honestly, there are no standout sessions in this 16-day window. Batts Rock is inconsistent at the best of times, and this is one of those quiet runs where the forecast can change, but for now, the board stays in the shed.
