The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – for this corner of the coast, we’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch ahead. The model’s calling it a 16-day window with barely a whisper of surf. We’ve got a solid gap of nothing worth paddling for from the start, all the way through to the end. The first real chance of a wave shows up on the 22nd of August, but even then, it’s barely a ripple.
Let’s break it down, but honestly, there’s not much to get excited about.
Batts Rock is the only game in town, and it’s an inconsistent point break that needs the right angle. The water is sitting at 85°, which is about average for the time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit. The first few days are a total write-off. On Saturday the 22nd, we’ve got a 0.3ft wave from the north with a super short 10-second period, generating only 2 units of energy – that’s not even a ripple, it’s a lake. The wind is offshore, but it’s a stiff 16 mph breeze, which will just chop up any hope of a ride. The forecast says “poor surf conditions” and I’m not arguing.
Sunday the 23rd? Same story. 0.7ft, 9-second period, 6 units of energy. The wind is a fresh 19 mph offshore. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to surf. The rest of that week into the end of August is a total blank. Zero energy. Just offshore wind blowing over a flat ocean.
We get a tiny pulse on the 25th with a 0.3ft wave but a long 12-second period and 3 units of energy. Still nothing. Then we hit another big dead zone. No swell at all from the 26th through the 28th.
On the 29th of August, there’s a 0.3ft wave with a very long 15-second period (4 units of energy). This is a groundswell, and for a point break like Batts Rock, that super-long period can sometimes make a tiny wave stand up a little better, but 0.3ft is still 0.3ft. The wind is a fresh 19 mph offshore, so it’s blown out.
The 30th of August shows a little bump: 0.7ft, 12-second period, and 15 units of energy. That’s the highest energy we see in the whole run, but it’s still weak. The wind shifts to a gentle 9 mph offshore, which is the best wind we’ll see. On the 31st, a similar 0.7ft, 11-second wave with 14 units of energy and a cross-offshore breeze. This is the closest we get to "surfable," but it’s still poor.
The first week of September is more of the same – flat conditions with a few 0.3ft and 0.7ft pulses on the 1st, 4th, and 6th, all with northerly swells and offshore winds. The period on the 6th of September is a long 14 seconds, but the energy is only 8 units. It’s just not enough.
So, the bottom line: There is no standout. There is no best on offer. This is a 16-day stretch of total flatness. The combined swell energy never cracks a three-digit number, meaning the ocean is basically asleep. The offshore winds are consistent, but they’re just grooming a blank canvas. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this kind of run is normal for the area. Don’t bother paddling out. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, just to get some use out of that wind. Keep your board in the bag, check back later, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
