The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's be straight with you – the outlook for Andicuri over the next 16 days is a tough one. It’s not looking good. The first surfable day isn’t even on the cards until the pattern shifts, and even then, the conditions are fighting us every step of the way.
For the first few days, starting Tuesday the 18th, the wind is just relentless. We’re talking a persistent easterly and east-northeasterly breeze, blowing cross-onshore or cross-shore at 15 to 28 mph. That’s kicking up a real mess. The swell is there, mostly around 5 ft to 6 ft from the east-northeast, but with a short, weak period of only 6 to 8 seconds, it’s chopped up and lumpy. The combined energy is moderate, sitting between 172 and 283, but with that wind, it’s just whitecaps and closeouts. Honestly, for a surfer, this is a write-off. The setup is better suited for kiting than paddling.
This grim pattern holds through the end of the week and into the weekend. From the 20th to the 25th, the swell actually picks up, hitting 7 ft to 8 ft from the east, and the energy climbs into the 400-565 range (moderate to strong). But the wind is still a strong 22 to 28 mph from the east or east-northeast, keeping everything cross-shore and messy. The water temp is a normal 83°F, but you won’t even want to get in. Every single time slot has the same label: *poor surf conditions*.
Now, there is a glimmer on the horizon for a couple of days, but it’s mixed. On Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops right down to only 3 ft, but the period jumps to a long 12-13 seconds from the east-northeast. That's a proper groundswell energy (508), but the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross or cross-onshore. With that tiny swell and messy wind, it’s not going to be an epic session. Then Thursday the 27th brings back more size, around 5 ft to 7 ft, but the period drops back to a short 6 seconds and the wind stays on it.
The only potential standout is a brief window on Thursday morning, the 27th, where the wind eases slightly to a moderate 16 mph easterly, still a cross-shore, and the swell is 5 ft. But with that short period (6 seconds) and a cross-chop on the board, it’s still a gamble.
Into the final days of August and the start of September, the pattern repeats: moderate to strong energy (300-663) with 6 ft to 8 ft east-northeast swell, but always wrecked by strong, onshore winds. The biggest energy of the whole run (663) shows up on Wednesday the 2nd of September with a 8 ft swell and an 8-second period, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore 19 mph.
So, there are no true standouts here. We have a 16-day window with a lot of wind and no clean conditions. The surf is there, but the wind kills it every time. Keep an eye on the forecast, because a change in that breeze is all we need.
Rusty.
