The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it, folks. I’ll level with you right off the bat: this 16-day window for Andicuri is a real heartbreaker. It’s a stretch that’s going to be all about watching from the sand. The wind is the big bully here, messing things up day after day, and the waves just aren't cooperating for a clean ride.
Looking at the whole picture, we've got consistent swell rolling in, but it’s a stubborn east-northeasterly wind that’s going to tear it to pieces. The wave energy is moderate most of the time, often in the 400 to 500 range, and a few spikes closer to the 500s. But it doesn’t matter one bit when the wind is a fresh to strong breeze, always cross or cross-onshore, leaving the surface a complete mess of criss-cross chop and lumps. The swell period is short, just 6 to 8 seconds, so there’s no power or shape to work with even if the wind behaved. The water temperature is about 82°F, right on the mark for this time of year.
Starting on Sunday, July 19th, it’s a clean morning sky but that’s where the good news ends. Wind is screaming out of the east at 25 mph, cross-onshore, shoving the 7ft ENE swell into a frothy mess. Afternoon is the same story, just a touch less wind. That’s our theme for the whole first week. Monday through to Saturday the 25th, it’s more of the same, just relentless onshore and cross-shore winds in the 22 to 28 mph range, with the waves staying between 5ft and 8ft, but always poor and blown out.
We see the same grim pattern through the end of the month and into the start of August. Sunday the 26th through to Monday, August 3rd is the same tortured forecast: east winds, cross-shore, messy, lumpy. The swell holds steady at around 6ft to 7ft from the east, with a short 7-second period, strong breeze almost all the way, and once on August 1st, the wind picks up to 31 mph – a near gale. It’s ugly out there.
The only break in the whole file is Andicuri, which is very consistent for swell and is exposed to the north. But the optimum swell direction here is from the north, and we’re getting everything from the east and east-northeast. That, plus the brutal wind direction, means there is absolutely nothing salvageable. For this area, a blank run like this is unfortunately not surprising when the trades lock in.
Just trust me on this one. Save the boards, grab a beer, and watch the wind howl. The ocean is pumping with a moderate energy (often between 239 and 581), but for us surfers, it’s a total write-off. If you're into kitesurfing, this setup is a different story, but for a paddle surfer? Not a chance.
Rusty.
