The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The overall pattern is one of persistent cross-onshore winds and only marginal surf quality, with no real standout days that scream "go now." There’s a gap of poor to marginal conditions right through the middle of the period.
We’re looking at Villa, a reef break that’s very consistent, but it’s an advanced wave. The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is a massive 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, you won’t need a thick wetsuit, that’s for sure.
The first real chance comes on Thursday the 16th of July in the morning. Swell is 5ft from the SSW, with a 13-second period, giving moderate wave energy (814). The wind is a light cross-on, but it’s still enough to put a bit of texture on the face. The tide might be a factor, but it’s about as good as it gets early on. Crowds are likely here, so get in early.
The second half of the month is a real grind. From the 17th right through to the 24th of July, it’s a long run of poor to marginal surf. The winds just won’t get out of the south, keeping things choppy and messy. The swell hangs around the 3ft to 5ft mark, but it’s not clean enough to get excited about.
There’s a flicker of life on Friday the 24th of July morning. The swell pushes up to 5ft from the SSW, but the period drops to 8 seconds – that’s short-period, wind-affected stuff. The energy is moderate (564), but the wind is light cross-on. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the best of a bad bunch that week.
The late period, around Sunday the 27th of July, brings a long-period groundswell (18 seconds), but only 3ft of it. That’s a very long period for a small wave, meaning it’ll be fat and slow, breaking straight at the beach. It’s a reef break, so it might hold up better than a beach, but with light cross-on wind, it’s still just a marginal option. The energy is moderate (858).
The best on offer, if you can call it that, is a tie between the 16th of July morning and the 29th of July afternoon. The 29th sees a 4ft SW swell with a 14-second period and strong, moderate to strong wave energy (951). The wind is cross-on, but it’s a better quality swell. It’s still not perfect, but it’s the closest we get to a decent wave in the whole window.
If you’re a beginner, the swell never really gets over 5ft in a clean way, so you’re not missing much. For the experts, the 5ft to 6ft days are there, but the wind and chop ruin the party.
Rusty.
