The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the Tel Baruch South Beach stretch for the next couple of weeks. I’ll keep it real.

First off, the water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 28°, so that’s a nice little bonus.

The whole outlook is a flat spell. The first few days are a write-off, with hardly any energy. We’re talking about a weak combined energy of 30 (30) on the 14th, with a tiny 2ft windswell from the WNW. The wind is onshore, and it’s just poor. That pattern sticks around for a good long stretch. From the 14th of July right through to the 23rd, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is small, mostly under 3ft, the wind is often cross or onshore, and the wave quality is described as poor. You’ll see a few glassy mornings on the 18th, 19th, and 20th, but the swell is so tiny (2ft, 1ft) it’s barely a ripple.

The best we get is around the 24th and 25th of July. The swell picks up a bit, with a more noticeable 5ft to 5ft swell from the WNW. The combined energy jumps to 256 (256) and even 306 (306) on the Friday afternoon. That’s moderate wave energy. Still, the wind is a problem. It’s cross-shore or cross-onshore, and the forecast calls it poor surf conditions. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell, not a proper groundswell. For a beginner spot, 5ft is pushing it. The break is fairly exposed, so it’ll be lumpy and messy.

The morning of the 25th looks the most promising of the lot. It’s a 5ft swell from the WNW with a light 6 mph cross-shore wind from the SSW. That’s a gentler breeze, and the wave comment says “light cross-shore with small crossing wind ripples” – it’s not clean, but it’s the best wind we see on a day with any size. The crowds are noted as “often” here, so expect company.

After that, it drops off again. The 26th has a 4ft swell, but it’s cross-onshore, and by the 27th it’s back under 3ft with onshore winds. The final few days of the month are flat, with combined energy as low as 8 (8).

So, the honest truth? There’s no standout. The best on offer is a toss-up between the morning of the 24th and the morning of the 25th, with the 25th getting the edge thanks to the lighter wind. If you’re desperate, you might get a few lumpy, short-period waves, but don’t expect much. The setup is a beach, so on the bigger, windier days, it might look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.

It’s a long, flat run. Don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
