The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Tel Baruch South Beach over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a beach break that’s fairly exposed to whatever comes its way, and the optimum swell direction is from the west, but for most of this run things just aren’t lining up.
For the first week or so, it’s a real struggle. There’s a gap of several days where there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, often below 2 ft, and when it does pop a little on Sunday the 30th of August with a 5 ft WNW swell, the wind is all wrong – onshore or cross-onshore, chopping it right up. The combined swell energy hits 322 (moderate wave energy) that morning, but it’s still a mess. The water temp is sitting at 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice thought for a swim, not for surfing.
The one sliver of light comes early on Tuesday the 1st of September. We see a glassy morning with a light NNE breeze at 3 mph, and a small 3 ft WNW swell rolling in. The combined energy is only 67 (weak energy) and the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s not going to be anything epic, but it’s the tidiest conditions in the whole forecast. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and I’d take that over the rest of this mess. On that same day, the morning is your only window – by afternoon the wind swings and spoils it. If you’re a beginner, this is the only real option, and with crowds listed as "often," you won’t be alone in the water, but at least it’ll be clean.
Beyond that, it’s pretty bleak. We see glassy mornings again on the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th of September, but the swell drops back to ankle-snappers of 1 ft to 2 ft with combined energy barely hitting 48. Not enough to push a paddleboard, let alone a surfboard. There’s no standout day in the second week – it’s just flat and unremarkable.
In short: the whole 16-day window is a write-off for any serious surfing. If you’re desperate for a glide, the best on offer is that Tuesday, September 1st morning. Otherwise, save the energy. For kite surfers, the bigger, windier, choppy days like Sunday the 30th might look more interesting, but for us stick-and-string folks, it’s a tough one.
Rusty.
