The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. It’s gonna be a tough stretch for anyone looking for a proper wave. The entire 16-day window is practically one big flat spell, so don’t bother rushing to wet a line unless you’re just keen for a paddle. There’s a real gap here with no decent surf on the table.

Let’s look at Tel Baruch South Beach. The first sniff of anything is from Thursday, August 6th, but it’s a write-off. We’re looking at tiny swell, around 1 ft to 2 ft, with a short period of 6 seconds from the WNW. The wind is a messy cross/onshore, and the combined energy is a weak 15 to 20 (moderate wave energy). The water is a touch warmer than normal at 85°F but that’s about the only good news. Conditions are labelled “poor” right through.

Friday and Saturday, August 7th and 8th, are no better. Still tiny, still short period, still cross or onshore winds. The swell bumps up just a fraction to 3 ft by Sunday, August 9th, with a light cross breeze in the morning, but the period is still a weak 7 seconds, so it’s a dribbly, weak wave. The combined energy is only 51 (moderate wave energy). Not worth a session.

We get a moment of glassy conditions on Monday, August 10th, and again on Tuesday, August 11th, with the wind going light northerly. But the swell is puny: 2 ft and 1.0 ft respectively. The period is 6 to 7 seconds. It’s a flat, clean lake, not surf. The combined energy is a pathetic 26 and 18 (weak wave energy). You could paddle a longboard, but you’ll be waiting forever for a ride.

The rest of the first week and into the second week is a repeat of the same story. The swell height flickers between 1.0 ft and 3 ft, with periods mostly stuck at 6 to 7 seconds. The winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, and often moderate. The combined energy stays in the low tens to low hundreds, never reaching anything exciting. The only slight bump is on Sunday, August 16th, when the combined energy hits 105 (moderate wave energy) with a 3 ft swell and 8-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore, ruining any chance of a clean wave. It’s still “poor surf conditions.”

Through the middle of the second week, Tuesday, August 18th, sees the swell hit 3 ft with a combined energy of 117 (moderate wave energy), but again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, the period is a short 7 seconds, and it’s a beach break. That setup is more interesting for a kite than a paddle. The surf is still labelled “poor.”

The final days, August 20th and 21st, fizzle out. The swell drops back to 1 ft to 2 ft, periods are short, and while the 21st morning is glassy, there’s simply no wave to ride. The combined energy is down to 12 (weak wave energy).

Honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about here. The swell direction is WNW, which is fine for the exposed beach, but the size, period, and wind are all against us. The whole 16 days feels like a blank run. For a spot like this, it’s not unusual, but it’s still a bummer. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it can’t stay this flat forever.

Rusty.
