The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – over the next 16 days at Tel Baruch South Beach, there’s no surf worth paddling out for. Not a single window lines up. From Saturday 29 August right through to Sunday 13 September, every session is a dud. The waves are tiny, the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the quality is consistently poor. The biggest offering of the whole stretch is Sunday morning 30 August, where the swell bumps to 5 ft out of the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, but the wind is onshore from the west at 9 mph, and it’s labelled “poor surf conditions.” That’s the best of a bad lot, and it’s still a mess. The water temp is running a touch warmer than normal at 86°, about 3° above average for this time of year – a nice quirk for a float, but you won’t be riding much.

The combined swell energy only hits triple digits once – on Sunday 30 August morning it reaches 313 (moderate energy), but it’s wasted in onshore wind and chop. For the rest of the period, the energy is weak, well under 100, with swell height rarely above 3 ft and period mostly 6 to 8 seconds – short, weak windswell. The beach is beginner-friendly but fairly exposed to the swell, and even on the few glassy mornings (3 September, 7 September, 8 September, 10 September, and 12 September), the swell is just too small at 1 ft to 2 ft. There’s no stand-out day. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe the glassy Thursday morning 10 September with 2 ft swell and no wind could be a flat-water cruise, but there’s no wave. This is a long dry spell, but forecasts can change – right now, there’s nothing to chase. Keep the board in the car and wait for the next pulse. Rusty.
