The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got to level with you about Tel Baruch South Beach for the next 16 days.
It’s a rough run. The whole 16-day window is flat, with no real surf worth chasing. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is often blowing onshore or cross-onshore, messing up the little bit of bump that’s there. The water is sitting at 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but that’s the only bright spot.
We start Saturday afternoon, August 8th, with a weak 3ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is onshore at 12 mph, and the combined energy is just a pathetic 38. It’s a total washout. Sunday the 9th is a little cleaner in the morning with a light cross-onshore breeze, but it’s still only 2ft and the period is a miserable 6 seconds. It’s just ugly.
A few mornings give a moment of peace. Wednesday the 12th morning is glassy, dead calm, but the swell is only 2ft with a 6-second period – it’s barely a ripple. The combined energy is just 18. Thursday the 13th morning is similar, glassy with 1.0ft, but again, there’s not enough push to move a board. The energy is a whisper at 8.
The best of the worst comes on Monday, August 17th. The morning has a 3ft swell from the WNW, and the wind is a gentle cross-onshore. The combined energy builds to 73. It’s the highest energy in the whole forecast, but it’s still labeled as "poor surf conditions" and "fairly choppy." The afternoon sees a 3ft swell with the same 7-second period, but then the wind swings onshore. It’s not worth paddling out for.
There’s a tiny flicker on the very last day, Sunday, August 23rd. In the morning, there’s a 0.7ft swell with a long period of 11 seconds, which is a proper groundswell signal, but it’s only 0.7ft. The afternoon bumps up to 2ft with a 10-second period from the W, and the energy jumps to 63, but the wind is onshore again. It’s a cruel tease.
For a spot that’s fairly consistent and fairly exposed, this is a dry spell. It’s a beginner-friendly beach break, but with no waves, there’s nothing to learn on. The lack of swell and the persistent onshore wind mean even the kite surfers might be out of luck. We’ll just have to wait and see if the forecasts change.
Rusty.
