The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking flat and pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak waves on the cards, so don’t get your hopes up for anything decent until the final days of the month.

Right now, and for most of the coming week, we’re looking at tiny, weak surf. For instance, on Sunday the 16th, you might find a knee-high 3ft wave at Tel Baruch South Beach, but the energy is weak (116) and the wind, while glassy in the morning, turns onshore and lumpy in the afternoon. It’s really not worth getting wet for. This pattern of small, poor surf continues straight through the week. The swell stays around 2ft to 3ft, with periods shrinking to 5 or 6 seconds, and the energy drops right off. You’ll see plenty of mornings that are glassy, but the waves are just too small and gutless to be any fun. The onshore breezes kick in most afternoons with 15-25 km/h winds, chopping up what little is there.

This poor run doesn’t let up for the second week either. From the 23rd through to the 28th, it’s more of the same: tiny waves, weak energy (mostly under 30), and poor surf quality. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a thicker suit, but you might not even need a board. It’s a long, quiet spell. There is a notable gap of almost two weeks where there’s simply nothing on offer.

However, things start to look a little more interesting towards the very end of the month. On Saturday the 29th, we finally see a pulse of energy. The swell jumps to 4ft from the WNW, with a 7-second period. The combined energy reads 181, which is a sign of some moderate life in the water. It’s not huge, but it’s something. The morning wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it might be a bit lumpy, but it’s a step in the right direction. The following day, Sunday the 30th, sees similar conditions with 4ft of WNW swell and a slightly longer 8-second period. Again, the energy is moderate (196), and the light cross-shore wind should keep it from being a complete mess. These are the only two days that really stand out as having any potential, but they’re still a ways off, so don’t book the day off work just yet.

This is a spot that’s fairly consistent in its inconsistency, so this kind of blank run isn't unusual. But the good news is, with that final pulse showing up, it suggests the ocean is waking up. Forecasts can change, and it usually doesn’t stay this poor for long. For now, keep the board in the car, but maybe leave the wetsuit at home.

Stay salty,
Rusty
