The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – sometimes the ocean just doesn’t cooperate, and this is one of those times. We’ve got a long stretch of quiet, small conditions ahead.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, Tel Baruch South Beach is the only spot on the cards, and to be honest, it’s a tough one. The water is sitting at a warm 84° with a touch warmer than normal anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but the surf is just not there. From the very start, we’re staring down a 16-day run with no real surf to get excited about. The first week is dominated by tiny, weak swells – mostly under 2ft – with cross-onshore winds that keep things messy. The combined wave energy is weak, reading between 20 and 57 (52), which is barely a ripple. Periods are short, between 5 and 8 seconds, so there’s no power or shape to speak of.
There’s a tiny moment of calm on Tuesday the 4th, with the morning going glassy, but the swell is still only 2ft and the period is a woeful 5 seconds. It’s clean, but there’s not enough push to do anything with it. The crowd situation at Tel Baruch can be ‘often’ busy, but with surf this poor, I doubt many will be out.
The second week doesn’t offer any relief. The swell remains tiny, staying below 3ft for most of it, and the winds keep switching between cross and onshore. The only real highlight, if you can call it that, is the morning of Tuesday the 11th, when it goes completely glassy again with a calm wind. But the swell is just 1ft with a 7-second period. It’s beautiful to look at, but you’ll be floating around waiting for a bump.
The very end of the forecast, on Sunday the 16th, sees a slight bump to 3ft to 4ft, with the combined energy finally hitting 170 (moderate). The period stretches to 8 seconds, which is still short, but it’s more than we’ve seen. The problem is, the wind is onshore in the afternoon, and the morning is only light cross. It’s the best on offer, but that’s not saying much. This is a flat spell, pure and simple. For an area like this, a blank run is normal when the charts look like this. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
