The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Alright, let's be straight with you – the next couple of weeks here at Tel Baruch South Beach are going to be a tough slog. We're looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with generally poor conditions. The water is sitting at 86°, which is a touch warmer than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so that's a nice little bonus if you're just having a swim.
From now through the end of August, the story is pretty much the same: small waves, mostly under 3ft, with a lot of cross-onshore and onshore breezes messing things up. The combined swell energy is very low, often in the single digits or just over 20 (energy values like 26, 32, 19), meaning there's barely any push. The swell is coming from the WNW, which isn't ideal for this spot that's best with a W swell. The wind is often from the NW or NNW, creating choppy, bumpy surfaces. There are a few mornings with glassy or light wind conditions, like on the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August, but the swell is only 2ft with a short period of 6 seconds. It's just not enough to get excited about. You could probably get a few little knee-high wobbles, but it's hardly what you'd call a surf.
This quiet period stretches all the way through the end of the month. There's a gap of many days with no real quality surf on offer.
Then, as we roll into September, we finally see a glimmer of hope. On the morning of Monday the 1st of September, things change. The swell picks up to 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 191, which is getting into the moderate range. The wind is glassy from the WSW, which is a huge positive. The guidance says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," scoring a 1 out of 10. It's not a standout, but it is the best we've seen in the entire forecast. The WNW swell direction is a bit off the optimum W, but the clean conditions and the slight increase in size make it the only window worth paddling out for. After that, the swell drops back down again, and the onshore winds return.
Honestly, most of this period looks more interesting for a kite session if the wind is strong enough, rather than for paddle surfing. The tiny, choppy surf just isn't going to do it for us.
Rusty.
