The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it's looking pretty bleak for Tel Baruch South Beach over the next 16 days. We’re stuck in a funk with barely a wave to get excited about, and even when there's a bump of swell, the conditions are doing us no favours.

Right now, the beginning of this stretch is flat out poor. We’ve got tiny waves in the 1.0ft to 1ft range with short-period windswell and onshore or cross-onshore winds messing everything up. The combined energy is pitiful, barely scratching 15 (15). It's just not worth wetting a wetsuit.

Moving into the 29th and 30th of August, the swell tries to pick up a bit. Saturday the 29th sees the height nudge to 2ft but with a cross-shore wind creating a chop – the energy is still weak (67). Then Sunday the 30th, the swell actually jumps to 6ft with moderate wave energy (406) out of the WNW, but it's accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms and strong onshore winds. It's a messy, blown-out wall of water. Not for beginners at that size, and frankly, not pleasant for anyone.

The first week of September is a bit of a tease. Tuesday the 1st of September brings a tiny 3ft swell, but we get a glassy morning with zero wind. The energy is low (66), but at least it would be clean. That’s about the closest we get to a “look, it’s not terrible” moment. We see similar glassy pockets on the mornings of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th of September, but the swell is always tiny – 1ft to 2ft – and weak. Those are days for a longboard or a paddle, not a proper surf.

The absolute best on offer – and I use that term loosely – is the morning of Tuesday the 8th of September. We finally get a moment where the forecast says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". You’ll find a 3ft swell from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds and nearly glassy conditions. The combined energy is still only moderate (97). It’s your best shot for something clean and rideable, but manage your expectations – it's small and the quality is weak. After that, it fades right back down to tiny, weak slop through to the 11th of September.

Honest truth, for the next two and a half weeks, this stretch of coast is offering next to nothing for a proper surf. It’s a long, dry run. The water temp is sitting at 85°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for late August, so it's pleasant enough to sit out there, but there's just no push. If the wind is howling from the NW as it tends to, this setup might look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. But for us wave hunters? Better to keep the board in the rack for a while.

Rusty.
