Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tandjungs-Rights over the next 16 days.
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks. Let's be real from the start: it's a tough run for Tandjungs-Rights. This is a world-class reef, but the wind gods are just not playing ball with the swell. The whole 16-day window is a headwind battle, with almost constant cross-onshore breezes messing up what could be some proper slabs.
The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, which is fine, but you'll be fighting the chop all day.
We kick off on Sunday, 12 July, with a clean ESE onshore breeze at 12 mph. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the SW, with a moderate energy reading of 406. It's poor surf, just plain messy. That same small, junked-up story runs right through to Monday, 13 July, with onshore wind and a period dropping from 12 to 13 seconds. Not worth a paddle.
Tuesday, 14 July, is where it gets tragic. The swell jumps to 6 ft–6 ft from the SSW with a period of 17-18 seconds, giving us a solid energy of 2584. That's a legitimate groundswell. But the wind is still a cross-onshore 12 mph from the ESE, turning it into a choppy mess. It's a "marginal" call, which is a polite way of saying it's frustrating. The swell is there, but the wind is ruining it.
Wednesday, 15 July, the swell holds at 6 ft–6 ft, period 16 seconds, and energy is still big at 1953. But that bloody cross-onshore wind is relentless. Wednesday afternoon the rating drops to zero. By Thursday, 16 July, the wind picks up to 16 mph, and the swell starts to drop, but with that wind, it's just a washout. Friday, 17 July, is the same story with rain showers thrown in. It's a long, frustrating gap of poor surf.
The pattern doesn't break. Saturday, 18 July, and Sunday, 19 July, are more of the same: cross-onshore wind, 4 ft to 6 ft swell, but with that wind, it's just poor. The energy on Sunday afternoon climbs to 2670, but it's wasted.
Monday, 20 July, we get the biggest swell of the run so far: 7 ft–7 ft from the SSW, period 16-17 seconds, and massive energy of 3162. This is expert territory, over 8 ft on the morning, but again, it's cross-onshore and choppy. Not a good look for a paddle surf; at this size with that wind, a kite would be the only way to have fun.
The final week is a slow fade. Tuesday, 21 July, the swell drops to 5 ft–5 ft, and the wind eases to a gentle 9 mph, but it's still cross-onshore. It's "marginal" again, but honestly, the surface is still fairly choppy. Wednesday, 22 July, morning is the closest we get to a clean window. The wind goes straight onshore from the ESE at 6 mph, and the swell is 4 ft with a period of 13 seconds. The energy is low at 670, and it's still a "marginal" call. It's clean-ish, but the swell is weak and short-period.
Thursday, 23 July, is a total dud with 3 ft–3 ft. Then Friday, 24 July, the swell tries to build again, hitting 6 ft–8 ft with a 19-second period and 3818 energy. But again, the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, making it a choppy, marginal offering. The last few days, 25-27 July, stay in the 8 ft–8 ft range with long periods, but it's always that cross-onshore wind. The energy is huge (over 3000), but the quality is poor. Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there's no standout. The best of a bad bunch is the morning of Wednesday, 22 July, when the wind is lightest and straight onshore for a brief, clean moment on a small swell. But it's not a day to get excited about.
Rusty.
