Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tandjungs-Rights over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Tandjungs-Rights, and honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a grind. This is a heavy, advanced reef break that needs things to line up perfectly, and the wind just isn’t playing ball for most of the run. The whole 16-day window is dominated by a persistent cross-onshore breeze, which is going to mess with the surface and make most of the days pretty ordinary. We’ve got a big gap of poor conditions right through the middle, so you’ll need to be patient.
The water temp is sitting around 81°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no need to worry about a wetsuit.
Let’s start with the beginning. Monday the 13th of July has a small 2ft SSW swell, but that 21-second period is proper groundswell. The problem is the 12 mph ESE cross-on wind is making it choppy and the combined energy is only 797 – weak and messy. The score is a zero, so it’s a flat-out no-go in my book.
Things actually get a little bigger from Tuesday the 14th through to Wednesday the 15th, with the swell building to 6ft to 6ft from the SSW. The combined energy jumps into the strong range (up to 2591), which means there’s plenty of water moving around. But again, the wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore, so the quality is marginal at best. Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning are the only two sessions that get a “1” on the scorecard for being borderline, but with a 16-17 second period and that wind, it’s going to be lumpy and hard to enjoy at a shallow reef. This is a spot for experts only at that size anyway, so it’s a tough sell.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Thursday the 16th of July right through to Monday the 20th of July, it’s a 5-day stretch of poor surf conditions, with the swell hovering between 4ft and 5ft, and energy dropping as low as 651. The wind stays onshore, and the scores are all zeros. Nothing to get excited about.
The best of the whole period comes on Monday the 20th of July. The swell picks up to 7ft to 7ft from the SSW, with a 16-17 second period and strong energy readings of 2504 and 2356. That’s a proper pulse. But – and it’s a big but – the wind is still a cross-onshore SE breeze at 12 mph. The morning session is rated a zero, and the afternoon is only a “1” for marginal. For a heavy, critical reef, that’s not clean enough to recommend. The size is in the expert-only zone, so if you’re a local charger who knows the ledge and can handle some chop, you might get a few. But it’s not the standout clean session we’d want.
The rest of the second week, from the 21st of July onwards, is more of the same. The swell size drops back to 3ft to 6ft, period shortens, the wind never lets up, and the scores are all zeros. The only flicker of something decent is Sunday the 26th of July, with a 5ft S swell and a 15-second period, plus the wind drops to 6 mph ESE. The combined energy is 1275 (moderate), and it’s rated a “1” for marginal. It’s the cleanest-looking window, with only a light breeze making small ripples, but it’s still cross-onshore.
Honestly, if you’re looking to paddle out, there’s no truly clear, clean, glassy day on offer. The persistent cross-on wind is the villain here. With that steady swell and the wind direction, this setup might actually be more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfing. The waves are there, but the quality is just not there.
Keep an eye on it, though. The swell keeps coming.
Rusty.
