The Lowdown
G’day, crew. Rusty here. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and honestly, the first week or so is a bit of a grind. The swell is consistent, but the wind is a real bastard most days, making things choppy and messy. The good news is there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s a proper little stand-out session if you can wait.
The only break on the cards is Tandjungs-Rights, a heavy, advanced reef. It’s a very consistent spot, and it’s fairly exposed to the swell, which is pumping in from the SSW – that’s the right direction for this place. The water is sitting at 79°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no dramas there.
We kick off on Thursday, 20th August, with a solid 8ft SSW swell but the wind is cross-on from the ESE at 9 mph, making it choppy. The energy is massive (3174), but the quality is poor. This sets the tone for the next week. From Thursday morning right through to Wednesday, 27th August, it’s a continuous run of marginal to poor surf. The swell stays between 4ft and 7ft, period is long (14 to 17 seconds), which is groundswell, but that cross-onshore wind just won’t let up. The combined energy is strong, often above 1000, peaking at 2823 on Friday afternoon, but it’s a frustrating mess. For a spot like this, with that wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
Now, we hit a bit of a turning point. On Thursday, 27th August, the swell drops to 3ft in the morning, but the wind swings to a cross-shore from the SSE at 9 mph. The afternoon sees a 4ft swell with a very long period of 19 seconds, and the wind is still cross-shore. It’s still marginal, but it’s a slight improvement.
Friday, 28th August, is where things get interesting. The morning brings a 8ft SSW swell, still long-period (16 seconds), and the wind is a clean cross-shore from the SSE at 9 mph. The energy is back up to 2893. It’s a heavy, powerful swell for a reef, so this is strictly for the experienced crew. The quality is still described as marginal, but the wind is better. The afternoon drops to 7ft with the wind turning cross-on again, so the morning is the pick of the day.
The next few days are a mix of marginal and poor, with the swell easing to around 5ft to 6ft.
Then, on Monday, 31st August, we see a 5ft to 6ft SSW swell with a very long period of 19 seconds. The wind is light and cross-on, and the energy is solid (2053 to 2525). It’s still a bit messy, but it’s a step closer.
The real standout appears on Wednesday, 2nd September. Wednesday morning, we get a 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and the wind goes cross-offshore from the SSW at 6 mph. That’s the magic combo. The energy is moderate (1411), but the conditions are described as “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the one to pencil in. The break will be clean, the swell is pumping from the right direction, and it’s a reef, so that long period will wrap in nicely. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others with the same idea, but it’s worth it.
After that, from Thursday, 3rd September, it fades back into marginal conditions with cross-onshore wind and a 5ft to 6ft swell, and then Friday, 4th September, has a risk of thunderstorms and onshore wind.
So, the bottom line: if you’re keen, wait for Wednesday, 2nd September, morning. That’s your best shot at clean, powerful waves at Tandjungs-Rights. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off, wind-wise, but that one session is a real opportunity. Stay patient, and you’ll be rewarded.
Rusty.
