The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for the coming weeks.
Straight up, this is a bit of a frustrating run. We’ve got a solid, long-period SSW groundswell coming through but the wind is just not playing ball. For the first nine days, it’s a constant battle with a 9 mph SE breeze that’s mostly cross-onshore, chopping up the surface. The water temp is sitting right where it should be for this time of year at 80°, so no surprises there.
The real standout energy hits on Wednesday the 19th into Thursday the 20th. Keramas is seeing a hefty 8 ft to 8 ft SSW swell with a very long period of 17 seconds, and the combined energy is massive—right up there at 3607 (moderate to strong). That’s a proper groundswell, packing a punch. But the catch is that cross-onshore wind. It’s going to be pretty choppy, especially on the surface. For a reef like Keramas, that’s a real shame because the shape could be world-class. It’s still surfable for intermediates, but the clean, glassy conditions we’re all chasing just aren’t there.
The swell hangs around at a good 7 ft to 6 ft through the rest of the week and into the next, but the wind stays stubbornly in the SE. Friday the 21st morning looks like a brief window with an offshore wind, but the conditions are still marked as marginal. It’s frustrating because the swell is there—it’s just the wind that’s letting us down.
By the time we get to Thursday the 27th, the swell drops down to under 3 ft, and the energy is weak. There’s a tiny pulse on the 27th afternoon with a very long 20-second period, but it’s only 3 ft. That’s a tease more than anything.
The real glimmer comes right at the back end of the forecast. On Friday the 28th, the swell jumps back up to 7 ft with a 16-second period, and the wind finally swings around to a light 6 mph southerly, which is offshore for Keramas. The combined energy is strong at 2285. This is the one to keep an eye on—it’s the only time in the 16-day window where the stars start to line up. It’s a long way out, so don’t book your flights yet, but it’s promising.
The following week sees a slow decline in size and energy, with the wind staying mostly onshore or light cross-onshore. Nothing really screams “go” after that Friday the 28th window.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout day that I’d be rushing out for right now. The swell is there, but the wind is the enemy. If you’re an intermediate who doesn’t mind a bit of chop, you’ll get waves, but it’s not going to be the clean, groomed Keramas we all dream of. Keep an eye on that Friday the 28th—if the wind holds, it could be the one.
Rusty.
