Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s coming our way for Keramas over the next couple of weeks.
Right out of the gate, we've got a solid pulse of SSW swell rolling into Keramas, a classic reef break that loves that direction. The water is sitting at a warm 82°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – no surprises there.
The first week, starting Monday the 6th of July, sees a fair bit of energy in the water, with combined swell energy readings in the thousands (1998 on Monday afternoon, 1807 on Wednesday morning) – that's strong wave energy. The problem is the wind. It's coming from the SE to ESE pretty much all week, keeping the surf cross-onshore and chopped up. The waves themselves are a decent 4 ft to 6 ft, with a long period of 14 to 16 seconds – that's classic groundswell, full of power – but the wind is just messing up the surface. Tide conditions look questionable too, so it's going to be a bit scrappy. The best of a so-so bunch is probably Monday morning with a 4 ft SSW swell that's just about rideable, but honestly, it's not firing.
Through the middle of the week, nothing really changes. Still cross-onshore winds, still that solid, long-period swell. Thursday and Friday the 9th and 10th bring some rain showers, but the swell stays in the 6 ft to 6 ft range. The wind is lightening up a touch on Friday, but it's still cross-onshore. Expect the lineup to be a bit of a battle.
By the weekend of the 11th and 12th, the swell starts to back off a little, dropping to 3 ft by Sunday. It's getting smaller and the wind is still onshore. Not the weekend to get excited about.
Now, here's the part that gets interesting. About a week and a half out, starting Saturday the 18th of July, the wind finally looks like it might play ball. We see the wind shift to light onshore or even offshore breezes – 3 mph to 6 mph from the SE, sometimes straight onshore, which for Keramas means clean, glassy conditions. The swell picks up again, too: from the 18th, we've got 4 ft in the morning building to 6 ft in the afternoon, with a very long 17-second period. The energy readings jump to 1449 and 1609 (strong). That's a very promising setup for a reef like Keramas – the long period will wrap in nicely.
The following days, Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th, and Tuesday the 21st of July, the swell keeps building to 7 ft – 8 ft, still with that long 15-16 second period, and the winds stay light and mostly offshore. The combined energy readings are massive: 2018, 2369, 2448 – that's very strong wave energy. This is where the standout window is: the 19th through the 21st. The waves will be solid, powerful, and clean. For experienced surfers, this is going to be the time to go. It's too big for beginners (over 5 ft and pushing 8 ft), but if you know what you're doing on a reef, this is the best stretch of the whole forecast. Crowds are possible at Keramas, so get in early.
Before that, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off due to the choppy conditions. But the longer-range outlook from around the 18th onwards is where the real magic sits – not locked in, but looking promising.
Stay stoked, and I'll see you in the water.
