G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Keramas over the next couple of weeks. It's a mixed bag, to be honest. We've got a solid, consistent reef break on our hands, but the wind is the main player here, and it's not playing nice for most of the run. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report.
We kick things off on Saturday the 4th of July. There's a decent amount of energy in the water with a solid 6ft to 6ft of SSW groundswell rolling in, carrying a period of 15 to 16 seconds. This long-period groundswell has heaps of push behind it, with combined swell energy sitting at a strong 1778 (Saturday morning) and 1651 (Saturday afternoon). Normally, this would be a cracking day, but the wind is blowing 9 mph from the SE, putting it cross-onshore which makes things choppy. It's a real shame, the quality just isn't there. The morning sees fair waves at 6ft, but the wind is still a light cross-onshore breeze at 6 mph, so it's a bit better but not glassy. The swell period drops to 14 seconds for the rest of the weekend, with energy levels still moderate to strong. Sunday afternoon has the same cross-onshore wind at 9 mph, making for choppy conditions again. Basically, we're getting surfable waves but the wind is killing the quality.
Monday the 6th of July sees the swell back up again, with afternoon sets hitting 6ft from the SSW with a period of 16 seconds. The energy is very strong at 2004, but that persistent 9 mph cross-onshore wind from the ESE keeps the surface messy. Not ideal. The rest of the first week into the second week is a bit of a grind. Tuesday the 7th has poor surf conditions with combined energy dropping below 1000, and moderate cross-onshore winds making it choppy. Nothing to get excited about there. Wednesday the 8th through to Friday the 10th of July sees a return of moderate to strong swell energy, with wave heights around 5ft to 6ft and periods of 15 to 16 seconds. But again, we're stuck with that constant cross-onshore wind, making for marginal to poor surf. Kitesurfers might be having more fun here than us paddle surfers.
The second week continues in a similar vein. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of July see the swell drop right down to under 3ft, with very low combined energy. By Monday the 13th, we get a small pulse of swell at 4ft to 4ft. Tuesday the 14th brings a new long-period groundswell up to 6ft from the SSW with a period of 18 seconds. The combined energy is a very strong 1695 in the afternoon. This is the standout period, but the wind is still cross-onshore at 9 mph. It'll be bigger and more powerful, but likely textured. Wednesday the 15th is similar, with a moderate breeze making things choppy. From Thursday the 16th of July onward, the forecast gets weaker and more uncertain. There's a pulse on the 16th with 6ft from the SE but a short period of 8 seconds, which is poor quality, and the wind is still up. The following days see smaller waves, with some onshore wind but lighter. The very end of the run, Sunday the 19th of July, sees a light breeze with some rain, but nothing is looking clean or consistent.
Honestly, there are no perfect days in this forecast. If you’re keen to get out there, the best bet looks like Tuesday the 14th of July. The swell is solid, the period is long, and the energy is very strong, but expect it to be a bit bumpy from the cross-onshore wind. It's not a standout, but it's the best of a less-than-ideal run. Keep your eyes peeled for a change in the wind, because the swell is there.
Rusty.
