The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here, and I’ve been poring over the charts for our local gem. We’ve got a steady run of south swell hitting a certain famous reef, but the quality is going to be a real mixed bag. The overall pattern is a persistent, moderate energy SSW swell pulsing through from Sunday the 23rd of August all the way to the 7th of September. The issue is the local wind. That steady gentle breeze from the southeast is going to keep things a bit choppy and textured for most of the period, rather than offering up the clean, perfect conditions this wave is known for.
We’re looking at Keramas. It’s a very consistent, exposed reef break and it’s pulling in that SSW swell all period. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a normal tropical bath. Let’s break it down day by day.
Sunday the 23rd kicks things off, but honestly, it’s a bit of a letdown. We’re seeing a 6 ft swell from the SSW with a long 15-second period, giving us a solid wave energy score of 1729. But that cross-onshore wind from the southeast is ruining the party, making for a fairly choppy and messy surface. The tide is looking questionable too. A frustrating start for a wave that can be world-class.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same story. The swell dips from 6 ft down to 5 ft, still a long 16-second period, but that cross-onshore breeze hangs around, so the surface stays bumpy. The combined wave energy is still moderate, but the wind is the main factor keeping the scores down. It’s rideable, but far from the perfection you’d want.
Things start to look a little more interesting on Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. The swell drops to around 3 ft to 4 ft, but we’re seeing a window of more favorable conditions. The wind begins to clock around to a straight onshore or even a light southerly. That 20-second period on Thursday afternoon (27th) is the standout here, bringing in some serious groundswell energy (2028). Even though the swell is smaller, that long period will produce some nicely shaped lines at this reef. A good morning or late session on the cards.
Now, if you’re an expert looking for a real punch, Friday the 28th of August is where the size kicks up. We’re looking at a very solid 8 ft SSW swell (slightly too big for beginners) with a moderate 16-second period. The combined wave energy hits a strong 3565. The wind is still onshore though, so it’ll be a test of skill. This is big, raw power at a heavy reef, and definitely only for experienced surfers.
After that peak, the swell eases back down through the weekend and into the first week of September. From Saturday the 29th to Wednesday the 2nd, we're looking at 5 ft to 6 ft SSW swells, with the wind often holding cross-on or onshore. The combined energy values are still in the moderate range. The window of opportunity here is on those mornings with a light breeze (6 mph) or when the wind turns more southerly, giving a slightly cleaner face. It’s still not the perfect, glassy Keramas you dream about.
Late on Friday the 4th of September, there's a small glimmer, a 4 ft swell with a light breeze giving a cleaner look. And rolling into the 5th and 6th we get similar conditions with that lighter wind.
Even though the wind is never truly perfect, the best bet for a rewarding surf is clear. For the quality of the waves themselves, Thursday the 27th of August is the standout. The swell is a manageable 3 ft to 4 ft from the SSW, but that super long 20-second period will turn it into a beautiful, long-running groundswell at this reef. It will offer the best shape and lines. The second pick is Friday the 28th of August for the more advanced crew – that’s the biggest swell of the period, with 8 ft of SSW and very strong energy, but be warned, the chop will make it heavy. Also, expect crowds at Keramas during any of these windows, it’s a popular spot.
As we look into the second week, from the 30th of August onward, the pattern looks similar. A persistent SSW swell but with that same wind. The promise from that early September period is that the swell energy stays alive, but it’s likely going to be frustrating with the constant onshore flow. It’s a long-range forecast, so we just cross our fingers and hope for a wind shift.
So, to wrap it up for this 16-day window: the surf is on offer, but it’s not an easy, glassy run. You have to pick your moments. Thursday the 27th for the shape, Friday the 28th for the power, and keep your eyes peeled for those lighter wind windows. The rest of the time, it’s a persistent, bumpy SSW swell that might just be more fun on a kite than a paddle board if the cross-shore wind blows.
Rusty.
