The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Sharp Park has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.

Straight up, this is a grim outlook for paddlers. We’re looking at a long, boring stretch with next to nothing worthwhile. There’s a sniff of a pulse around Sunday, August 9th, but even that’s just a sneaker set within a whole lot of mediocrity. The real story here is the persistent onshore and cross-onshore wind. It's going to be choppy and blown out almost the entire time. For most of the first week, the swell is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft, with weak energy reading around 124 to 270. The water is a warm 62°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a pleasant surprise if you’re just hanging on the beach, but it doesn’t help the waves out there.

From Wednesday August 5th right through to Saturday August 8th, it’s a write-off. Tiny swell, cross-onshore winds, and the wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions”. The water temp anomaly is noted on Wednesday the 5th as much warmer than normal, but that's little comfort when you're staring at flat, choppy water.

There’s a bump in the swell early on Sunday August 9th, with the swell reaching 5ft from the WNW and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy hits 616, which is moderate. It’s the biggest swell we see, but the wind is onshore at 6 mph, which at least is light. Still, the forecast says it’s only “marginal” due to questionable tide. It’s not a standout, just the best of a bad bunch. For the more experienced locals, this could offer a few lumpy walls, but don't expect any kind of quality.

From Monday August 10th onward, the swell drops again, staying between 2ft and 5ft for the rest of the forecast. The wind doesn’t let up, staying cross-on or onshore, with speeds picking up to a moderate breeze in the afternoons, making things even choppier. The combined energy hovers in the moderate range (200-450). There are a couple of mornings – August 16th and 19th – where the wave comment pops up as “marginal,” but both are still plagued by small swell and onshore wind. The long-period swell that shows up around Sunday August 9th might have some energy, but with the wind the way it is, it’s just going to be a mess.

Honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a traditional surfer. The consistent wind and moderate energy levels are better suited to someone with a kite than a paddle. For us surfers, it’s time to wait for a better forecast.

Keep your eyes peeled, but this one’s a pass for now.

Rusty.
