The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the cards for Sanur - Grand Hyatt. This is a reef break that's pretty inconsistent and is only for the advanced crew, so don't be expecting a beginner-friendly zone. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a solid run of groundswell from the SSW filling in, but the wind is the real story here. For the first week or so, it's mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which is a major buzzkill for a spot like this. The best looking window is actually the first weekend, starting Saturday 22 August. It's not perfect, but it's the best we've got.
Saturday 22 August sees a 7ft SSW swell with a 16-second period rolling in. The combined energy is strong at 2134, but the wind is onshore from the ESE at 12 mph, making it a bit of a battle. Conditions are described as "poor," so it's more about the size than the quality. The afternoon drops to 6ft but the wind swings SE, still onshore. It's a tough one to get excited about.
Sunday 23 August is similar, with a 6ft SSW swell, still 15-16 seconds of period. The morning is cloudy with an ESE breeze at 9 mph, and the afternoon clears but the wind stays onshore from the SE. It's rated as marginal, so you might find a few if you're desperate, but it's not going to be pretty.
The middle of the week, from Monday 24 August through to Thursday 27 August, is plagued by the same cross-onshore or onshore winds. Swell sizes drop a bit, ranging from 4ft to 6ft, but the energy is moderate to strong. The conditions are consistently "poor" or "marginal," with a lot of chop. Honestly, it's looking more like a kitesurfing session than a paddling one given the wind setup.
Then there's a bit of a spike on Friday 28 August. The morning kicks in with a 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and a massive 3065 combined energy. The wind is onshore from the ESE at 12 mph, so it's a bit of a beast. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 8ft, but the wind goes cross-onshore, making it choppy. This is the biggest swell of the period, but it’s only for the experts. The afternoon on Saturday 29 August is a bit more manageable at 5ft, but the wind is cross-onshore again.
The pattern continues into the second week with onshore winds and a mix of SSW and SSE swells. The period drops a bit on the SSE swells, down to 9-10 seconds, which is a shorter period. The standout in the second week might be Tuesday 1 September morning, with a 6ft SSW swell but a very long 18-second period, and 2575 combined energy. The wind is strong onshore from the ESE at 16 mph, so it's a battle.
Wednesday 2 September has a 7ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, and the wind is onshore from the ESE at 9 mph. The energy is high at 2485, but it's still marginal. The best day in the second week might be Saturday 5 September afternoon, with a 5ft SSW swell, 14-second period, and 1349 combined energy. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the SSE at 9 mph, so it's a bit cleaner than the rest.
Overall, don't expect a classic run. The swell is there, but the wind is a constant problem. The best bet is to pick the windows with the lightest onshore flow and hope for a few sets. The whole period is a bit of a grind for a spot that's already inconsistent. The best on offer is probably the early morning of Saturday 22 August or Friday 28 August if you're an expert and don't mind the wind. For the rest of us, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
