The Lowdown
Well, grab a coffee and settle in, because this is a tricky one. Let’s talk about what’s on offer around Sanur - Grand Hyatt.
First off, the water temperature here is sitting at 79°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year – no surprises there.
Now, the honest truth? The first several days are a bit of a struggle. The surf is there, but it’s not exactly welcoming. We’ve got a solid, long-period SSW groundswell pumping in from the 17th to the 19th of August, with swell heights around 8 ft to 8 ft and periods stretching to 16-17 seconds. The combined energy is massive, hitting 3587 (that’s a very strong, powerful wall of water). But – and it’s a big but – the wind is blowing straight onshore from the ESE at 12 mph, which is ruining the surface. Conditions are described as marginal at best, with questionable tides. This is advanced territory only, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty.
The pattern continues through the 20th and 21st, with swell still big (7 ft) and long period, but the wind stays onshore. The energy remains high, over 2600, but the quality is just not there for a fun session. The 22nd of August Saturday morning is a write-off with poor surf conditions.
We then hit a lull. From the 23rd of August through to the 27th, the swell drops steadily from 6 ft down to 3 ft, and the wind swings around to a cross-onshore direction. The combined energy drops below 1000 on the 26th, which is weak. The 27th Thursday afternoon sees a weird spike in period – 20 seconds – but with only 3 ft of swell, it’s a tease. For the most part, it’s a blank stretch with no real recommendations.
Around the 28th of August, things start to look a little more interesting. The swell jumps back up to 7 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, and the combined energy is back to a strong 2285. The wind is still cross-onshore, but it’s a light breeze from the SSE on Friday morning, which is the best wind we’ve seen in a while. This is the closest we get to a standout. If you’re an advanced surfer and you’re desperate, this is your window. The swell is big, long-period, and powerful, but the surface will have a few ripples. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best of a tough bunch.
After that, the swell fades again through the end of August and into early September, with heights dropping to 4 ft-5 ft and period shortening. The wind stays cross-onshore, and the energy falls back to moderate levels. The 31st of August Monday morning has a spike in period to 19 seconds with 5 ft swell and 2046 energy, but it’s accompanied by rain showers, so it’s hard to get excited.
The first couple of days of September see a modest bump back to 7 ft on the 1st and 2nd, with the same onshore wind pattern. The energy is strong again, around 2700, but the quality is still marginal.
So, what’s the call? Honestly, there’s no day that screams “go now.” The best bet is the 28th of August Friday morning, when the light wind gives the best chance of somewhat clean conditions on a strong, long-period swell. But this is a reef break that’s inconsistent and for advanced surfers only, and it can get crowded often. Don’t expect an easy paddle or a perfect wave.
If you’re a beginner, stay well clear. The swell is too big on most days, and the reef is a hazard. For the rest, it’s a waiting game.
