The Lowdown

Hey, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it – the next 16 days at Ste Barbe are mostly a bust, with one shining moment that’s worth the wait. This reef is a tough, advanced wave that breaks rarely, and for the first ten days you’re looking at ankle‑biters, chop, and onshore junk. Then, on the morning of Tuesday, July 28th, things finally line up. Clean 4ft west swell, light north‑northwest wind that’s slightly offshore, and glassy conditions. The combined energy sits at 241 – that’s solid, moderate push – and considering how inconsistent this spot is, you’d be a fool to skip it. The swell direction is a hair off the ideal (west vs. southwest), but with that wind and size, it’s the only day that’s truly firing. The afternoon gets trashed by a stiff cross‑onshore, so paddle out at first light.

The next morning, Wednesday, July 29th, is also worth a look – dead calm, a 3ft, 11‑second west swell, energy 169. It’s smaller and slower, but if you want a long, mellow session with hardly anyone around (crowds are rare here), it’s a solid backup. After that, the swell fades back into nothing. The 26th and 27th have some bumpy 4–4ft windswell, but it’s short‑period and lumpy, not worth the gas. For a finicky reef like this, you’ve got one clear standout. Don’t miss the 28th morning.

Rusty.
